Crayfest 2021 is running for its second
year and is set to be acelebration of
Kaikoura.
Crayfest runs from October 29 to
November 14, capturing Marlborough
Anniversary weekend and Christchurch
Show weekend.
‘‘The aim of Crayfest is to make
crayfish accessible to everyone,
celebrate crayfish seasonality and to
encourage sustainability through
enjoying ataste of crayfish and sharing a
cray among friends and family,’’ Future
Kaikoura chairperson Mel Skinner says.
‘‘It is also agreat way to support a
variety of businesses throughout
Kaikoura.
‘‘This year we have some incredible
dishes being created along with some
amazing events, activities and packages.’’
The response from businesses has
been ‘‘incredible’’, with nearly 30
businesses involved with new ones
coming on board each day, she says.
‘‘Dishes are being created, beers are
brewing, accommodation plumping
pillows, charter fishers preparing pots,
helicopters on standby, musicians
jamming and bubbles on ice.
‘‘We even have Atawera Art doing
crayfish tattoos. Its going to be amazing.’’
Renowned Lyttelton chef Giulio Sturla,
from Mapu restaurant, will joining the
team at Simes Kitchen on Beach Road.
Giulio was named chef of the year in
2018, previously ran Roots in Lyttelton,
was the only threehatted restaurant
outside of Auckland.
‘‘He will be undertaking a4course
crayfish degustation on October 31 to
kickoff Crayfest. The menu is simply
stunning,’’ Ms Skinner says.
Crayfest will be aculinary feast not to
be missed, she says.
From crayfish pies, dumplings,
twisters, fettuccini, pizzas, lobster rolls,
ravioli, fritters, ceviche, eggs benedict,
half cray, whole cray, barbecue cray and
more.
‘‘Kaikoura needs support. We have had
several events already cancelled over the
last 12 months with the most recent hit of
Kaikoura Races being moved to
Addington,’’ Ms Skinner says.
‘‘This is heartbreaking to many locals,
as not only is it agreat day out with
friends and family, but for small
businesses it is amuch need cash
By DAVID HILL
The contributions of Kaikoura’s
young people are set to be
celebrated on Saturday.
While othereventshave been
postponed,cancelled or
relocateddue to Covid19, the
Kaikoura Youth Council is
planning to go ahead with its
twoyearly youth awards.
Youth coordinator Vicki
Gulleford says afterreviewing
the AlertLevel 2regulations,
the youthcouncilrealised they
could manageit.
‘‘We will be having people
seatedattables ametre apart
and masks are recommended,
but not required,and food will
be served at the tables, with the
servers wearing masks.’’
She says the event is an
opportunity to celebratethe
contributions youngpeople
make in their community.
‘‘We’re really looking forward
to it being able to go ahead,
especially with the (Kaikoura)
races being lost to Addington.
Vicki saysshe was impressed
with the number and qualityof
the nominations, whichmeant
there were‘‘some hard choices
to make’’.
AbandofKaikoura High
School students will be
performing on the night,while
Green MP Chloe Swarbrickis
on the night.
Environment Canterbury has
donated Totara trees whichwill
be presented to winners,along
with cash prizes.
‘‘We’ve had amazing
sponsorshipfrom the
community,which we really
didn’t expect given how difficult
it is at the moment,’’ Vicki says.
The eveningwill also be a
learning opportunity for the
young organisers, who will
learn aboutall the sound,
lighting and technical
equipment. ‘‘We’ve got someone
do the lighting who hasn’t
touchedlightsbefore, so it’s a
huge learningcurve,’’ she says.
Young volunteers ... Summer Fissenden (left) and Alex Fissenden
were among the winners in the last Kaikoura Youth Awards in 2019.
will be agood boost for the
young people, as senior
students preparefor exams
after achallenging year.
‘‘There’s alot of anxiety,
particularly among our senior
students with exams. We see it
every year, but thisyear it does
seem to be worse.
‘‘Last yearthe lockdown was
earlier in theyear, so it didn’t
have the same impact on exams,
butthis time it was August when
they were meant to be doing
mock examsand they had
internal assessments due,
which were pushed back, so
there’sabig workload at the
moment.‘‘So it’s quite scary for
them.’’
