Young boxers taking it to the next level

For the first time, atrio of
youngCanterbury boxers have
started specialist training with
High Performance Sport New
Zealand.
All three, however, are no
strangerstothe pressures of
national­level competition.
DanielMeehan (18), from
Smiling Tigers, Hameura
Tainui (17), of Woolston, and
Leon Gibson (17), of Waikuku,
are all age group,nationaland
Golden Glove champions.
Nowthey have the
opportunity of taking their
sporting careers in new
directions.
Forthe next six months,they
will be individually mentored
by specialistsatthe HPSNZ
centre near Jellie Park.
They willlearn about
preparation, fitness, mental
conditioning and nutrition.
HPSNZ regional manager
Andrew Ellis says it is the first
time they have invited athletes
at this youth age level andlike
their coaches, he believes it
means alot for the sport here in
Canterbury.
‘‘It's partofthe pilotscheme
for HPSNZ’s newregional
model due in 2022 with its focus
on developing talent in regional
sports,’’ he says.
Aimed at formalising the
career pathwaysofyoung
talented athletes, by helping
them to progress towards elite
and eventually country
representation.
‘‘We invite them, their
families and coaches to a
meeting where we learn all
about what they are doing, what
theyunderstand about the
pathways open to themand the
levels of performance theyare
seeking,’’ Mr Ellis says.
‘‘It’s aboutdiscovering their
aspirations on andoff the field.
‘‘We try to find someofthe
rocks that need to be shifted at
this stage in their careers.
‘‘Everyoneisdifferent, so it is
not about them sitting there
having someone just telling
them what to do, they must lead
the project.’’
HPSNZisalso running a
regional coaching pilotscheme
at the same time, with 12
emerging coaches fromprehigh
performance
environments learning how to
build their coaching
capabilities in alignment with
their athletes.
Woolston head coach Holly
Sullivan says it is awonderful
opportunity for young athletes
inthe junior boxing
programme.
‘‘Thereisalot of talent in the
grassrootssport here,but often
it’s only the mainstream
national levelsports that have
access to HPSNZ,’’ she says.
Ms Sullivan says it is eyeopeningasitgives
her, as a
coach, an insightinto the
resources they have.

‘‘We have somereal talent
herebut we are lacking
pathways guidance for our
athletes.
‘‘With support like this, it
helps us as coaches and
encourages the athletes that
there is apathway forward and
achancetohit someoftheir
goals.’’
Smiling Tigers coach Mark
Fuller says it will be an
invaluable experience for the
young men.
‘‘Daniel has already had a
few sessions with them and said
he wasenjoying the
opportunities offered.
‘‘The specialist coaches there
have all thatin­depth
knowledgewhich is justwhat
these young lads need right now
at this pointintheir careers,we
still coach them to box but what
they learn from their mentors
helps themontheir future
pathways in boxing,’’ he said.
