JabberWaka busy on Saturday<br />

Over 1800 peoplewere vaccinated in the<br />
Waimakariri Districtduring the Super<br />
Saturday vaxathon.<br />
It was the busiest <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
district, with 320 getting the jab in the<br />
HurunuiDistrict, and 140 in Kaikoura.<br />
The<strong>Canterbury</strong>District HealthBoard’s<br />
(CDHB) senior officer responsible for the<br />
Covid19response, Dr HelenSkinner ,says<br />
more than 17,000 Covid19 vaccinations<br />
were administered in the province last<br />
Saturday.<br />
At the CDHB’s JabberWakapopup<br />
covid vaccination centre in Kaiapoi,<br />
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon was the<br />
99th personatthe cliniconthe day to be<br />
vaccinated.<br />
He was having his secondvaccineshot<br />
and saidhewas ‘‘really thrilled’’ to see so<br />
many peopleatthe clinic getting<br />
vaccinated.<br />
‘‘If people wanttheir freedom back,<br />
gettingvaccinated is the best way to<br />
achievethat,’’ he said.<br />
The clinic opened at 11am and by<br />
closingtime,at5.30pm on Saturday, 269<br />
vaccinations had been administered with<br />
afurther 120 vaccinationsdone there on<br />
Sunday.<br />
Rapid ReliefTeam (RRT) members<br />
from Rangioraand Christchurch provided<br />
asausagesizzle at the clinic, serving up<br />
more than 500 sausagestopeople who had<br />
been vaccinated during the day, while<br />
nationwide RRT membersprovided more<br />
than 11,500sausages at vaccination clinics.<br />

ShelleyCapilwas also at the clinic<br />
handingout $100 PlaceMakers gift cards to<br />
people whohad been vaccinated.<br />
Adrian Teika, atradiefrom Kaiapoi, had<br />
his first vaccinationatthe clinicon<br />
Saturday and was pleased to receiveone<br />
of the gift cards fromShelley after his jab.<br />
Shelleysaid PlaceMakers were giving<br />
away $50,000worth of gift cards<br />
nationwide to people who got vaccinated<br />
on Saturday.<br />
Nationally the vaxathonsmashed the<br />
record for the numberofvaccinations in<br />
one day,with 130,000people getting ajab<br />
nationwide.<br />
The previous record was 90,757<br />
vaccinations on August26.<br />
The Director General of Health,Dr<br />
Ashley Bloomfield, thanked the many<br />
people involvedand all those who stepped<br />
up to be vaccinated.<br />
‘‘We take our hats off to the thousandsof<br />
vaccinators, volunteers, DHBand<br />
healthcare staff, community helpers,<br />
logistics teams,delivery people,<br />
Healthline callcentre workers and<br />
everyone elsewho played their part<br />
withoutwhom this result wouldnot have<br />
been possible,’’hesaid.<br />
Saturday’svaxathonresultmeans<br />
3,565,692Kiwis, or 85% of New Zealand’s<br />
eligible populationhas had at least one<br />
jab, and 2,748,291people (65%) were fully<br />
vaccinated.<br />
