Historic day for Kaiapoi tennis
By SHELLEY TOPP
The Kaiapoi Tennis Club has
made ahistoric start to the
new season.
Its Kaiapoi Ladies Premier
team is competing in the top
premier grade in the
Christchurch senior
competition.
North Canterbury Tennis
Association secretary Lois
Daniell says it is the first time
aNorth Canterbury club
team has competed in the
competition at that level.
Last Saturday its opening
match was against the Te
Kura Hagley Park Tennis
Club premier grade players
at its Sewell Street courts in
Kaiapoi.
‘‘They are ayoung team
who were near the top of last
season's Christchurch
Division One Ladies grade
and were invited to join the
Premier Ladies as a
challenge to grow their game
and the game in North
Canterbury.
‘‘Playing against better
players improves
performance, learning
experience and provides a
good challenge,’’ she said.
Although the Kaiapoi
players lost all of their six
games during the day they
acquitted themselves well.
They learnt alot from their
first experience competing at
the premier grade level, and
are looking forward to the
challenge of competing
regularly in the competition
both at home and away.
