OneofLeigh’s most interestingfindswas
apenguin fossil, mucholderthan any
previously found, which showed that
penguins were likelyaround at the same
time as thedinosaurs.
Over 10 new speciesofpenguin and
flyingbirds, including agiantpenguinthat
stands as tall as an adult human, havebeen
unearthed so far,and there is every
expectation thatmore bones will come to
light as thecliffs erode awayexposing
fossils ready to succumb to Leigh’s vigilant
searching.
Right from the start Leigh decided to gift
allhis finds to the Canterbury museum,
whichnow canclaimtohouse not onlythe
world’soldest penguin fossilsbut also the
world’smost complete specimen of any
bird thatlived duringthe 10 million years
following the extinctionofthe dinosaurs.
TheWaipara River alsoboasts oneofthe
fewplaces in the worldwhere it is easyto
go andsee theKTboundary.
