and I prepared a business case which we discussed over Zoom and it turned out they’d got a kiosk in Wall and Shenstone which they had adopted. They were a bit concerned about Streetly because they said it wasn’t as rural as the other areas and they thought there might be damage to it but in the end they adopted it for a pound and then I got some wonderful volunteers and we started to renovate it.” The perfect team of volunteers - Anne-Marie Goodchild, Mary Wheeler, Will Wheeler, Katie Blabey, Ramona Milhailescu and Phil Campion - came together to restore the kiosk and help bring the new library to life. The windows were repaired, a new coat of paint was applied, and custom-designed, handmade shelves were added. In went in the books, DVDs, CDs, jigsaw puzzles and even flower seeds for the public to take, swap and add; it was named The Exchange. “Together Will and Phil designed the shelves, Will then made them to go inside which were very good and they’ve received a lot of compliments,” Mary added. “There’s also a planter that wraps around the box and we’ve had plants donated by William Wheat and Sons. We constantly get compliments about it and the community seems to really appreciate it.” The entire renovation took approximately six months to complete. The Exchange was opened up by Dave Salter, Chair of the Shenstone Parish Council; he said it was the best renovation he had seen. “It was a big team effort, and it was a lot of hard work but it was all well worth it,” said Anne-Marie. “We had a lovely official opening and now it’s literally just a case of maintaining it. We did need extra money, so we did the Streetly Walking Market and had stalls outside there. At Christmas we had non-alcoholic mulled wine, Mary made some cakes, we had a tombola and so we raised a PayPal account and had a lot of money donated from the event.” Since the opening, word has got around; and it’s proving to be popular with the younger generations too. Sometimes, books don’t get used or there simply isn’t enough shelf space for them. Anne-Marie and Mary tell us what happens to the extra stock: “You’ll see the kids sometimes running there on a Saturday morning, you know they’re going there with books and they’re going to the Exchange. When we’re in there tidying up or refreshing the books, you see a lot more of the cookery books that get left and have been there for a long time. We do occasionally have to take some to charity shops because we don’t just want to throw them away.” The Exchange has built a real sense of community; it was there to be used in the pandemic when places were not open for everyone to enjoy. “When the libraries were closed during the lockdowns, the books were there for people to borrow and have a look at; grandparents have told us that they entertain their grandchildren by taking them down to the box and choosing books. A lot of community events have been triggered as a result of what we’ve been doing.” said Mary. “It’s very much a community hub as well as an exchange for books and it’s open 24 hours; we have built new friendships with people that we wouldn’t have otherwise, there’s been a lot of appreciation from the community and just actually being able to save it has been worth it,” added Anne-Marie. If you’d like to donate books to The Exchange, you can leave them on the shelves if there is space or, alternatively, there are contact details on the phone box where you can arrange for any books, CDs, DVDS and jigsaw puzzles to be collected.
