Blizzards. Strikes. Bodies. Power cuts. Terrorist threats. And Showaddywaddy’s
Greatest Hits topping the album charts. 1979 started off badly, and it got worse. But,
for journalist Allie Burns, someone else’s bad news was the sound of opportunity
knocking. So it may well be the winter of discontent, but she’s one of the few women
in the newsroom, and she’s chasing her big scoop. In 1979, the first of Val McDermid’s
Allie Burns series, the journalist and a colleague are exposing the criminal underbelly
of respectable Scotland, risking, obviously, making powerful enemies. Things hot
up when she uncovers a home-grown terrorist threat, and comes up with a plan to
infiltrate the group ... a move where putting a foot wrong could be fatal. Val’s upped
her already sky-high thriller level in this one ... it’s not only the icy weather that makes it
chilling. Little Brown • It’s Karen Rose. And there’s a cult. Do you need to know anything
more before you rush out and buy this one? FBI Agent Tom Hunter is chasing leads to
find the cult that damaged some of his closest friends. They managed to escape, but
one of the cult’s leaders is hunting them down. He’s out of control; the only person
who he may listen to is cult leader Pastor, a person no outsider has ever seen. When
serious injury has Pastor having to venture outside the cult compound, it’s Tom’s
chance to act, and bring the cult down. You had us a cult ... you know Say Goodbye
is going to be gripping, thrilling, and keep you up all night. It’s the third in the
Sacramento series – read Say You’re Sorry and Say No More first, if you can, but this does
also read well as a stand-alone. Headline
We’ve recently discovered Nalu wines ... a small selection of excellent wines, each of
which stand for something the Nalu team are passionate about. This month we’re
loving the Nalu Sauvignon Blanc 2020, a pale straw-coloured wine with light green
hue ... fresh with the tanginess of green figs and a zesty citrus twist. Lovely, and even
more enjoyable knowing by drinking this, we’re supporting the Two Oceans Aquarium
Education Foundation. Nalu (with a Hawaiian origin, means surging surf or what we
call wave) is inspired by the nature of SA, including its coastline and sea life, and a
percentage of every bottle is donated to the foundation. R68 from naluwines.com
There isn’t a book by Nora Roberts that we haven’t loved - be it those under her
own name or when she’s writing at JD Robb. Forgotten In Death, the latest
in the Eve Dallas (sexy, tough homicide cop) series, kicks off with Eve called to
a murder before she’s even got to work. A side-walk sleeper has been found
stuffed in a construction site dumpster. Within hours, two more victims are
found close by, a young mother and her baby. These bodies, however, have
been buried for more than 40 years. Two crimes. Same location. Coincidence?
As regular fans know, Eve doesn’t believe in coincidences. Soon she, sidekick
Peabody, and gorg husband and richest man in the universe Roarke, are knee
deep in shady dealings and Russian mobsters. This is the 54th (good grief ) in the
In Death series ... and they’ve all hit the best-selling charts lists worldwide. They
read as stand-alones, so you haven’t yet read one, now’s a great time to start.
Piatkus • Nicci French’s called the master of psychological suspense for good
reason. And she certainly earns the title in The Unheard, which revolves around
a mum whose top priority has always been her daughter, Poppy. But splitting up
with Poppy’s father means she can’t always be there to keep her daughter safe,
and when she finds a disturbing drawing, dark and menacing, with the threeyear-old’s
otherwise brightly coloured paintings, she’s convinced that the child
has witnessed something terrible. Twist after twist means she doesn’t know who
to trust, and the reader has no idea what’s coming next. Simon and Schuster.
Wow. How fabulous is this month’s
line up of thrilling authors! Joanne
Harris is up there with the best of
them ... and A Narrow Door is a dark
and sinister as you can get. The first
headmistress of a once only boys’
school has spilt blood to get to the
position, and the remains of a body
are discovered in the school grounds
aren’t going to get in the way of her
rise to the top. She’ll bury the past so
deep even she won’t remember it, just
like she’s done before. Joanne’s hard
hitting from the first page ... a clever,
twisted, atmospheric read you just
won’t be able to put down. Orion
WHITE TRASH - A MEMOIR
Terry Angelos was born in Rhodesia - a place that raised her to be strong-willed,
fearless, curious. The daughter of two devoted, respectable, middle-class
teachers, she was, she says, destined for success in a white-picket-fence,
2.5-children family. Instead, at 19 she drops out of her fine art degree, leaves
South Africa and heads to London, and by the time she turned 20, she was
a call girl, embroiled in the underworld of Chinese Mafia, depraved clients
and blackmail. Now in her early 50s, she’s a visual artist in Durban, with
three children and a pug. White Trash is her story ... the heroic quest to
reinvent herself. Honest, descriptive, beautifully written, heartbreaking,
uplifting ... it’s a story that took more than 30 years for her to feel ready to
write. Now it’s written. Now she can shut the door. Melinda Ferguson Books
PUT PEN TO PAPER
We chat to four inspiring women who turned their writing dreams into reality.
Caitlin Anne Tallack - Engineering student
The words engineering and poetry are rarely, if ever,
used in the same sentence. They are polar opposites,
right? Well, there’s always that exception. Take Caitlin, for
example. Despite being an engineering student - with
a bright future in front of her, since she was eight, she’s
dreamt about being a published writer. A dream that has
finally come true.
“The first poem I ever wrote was a two-verse ode to my
family’s double-my-size Great Dane puppy. The poem
was called Puppy Love. It was probably a terrible poem,
but it was the beginning of my attempts to express
myself through that poetry.’’
And from scribbling poems about dogs and the
garden, 21-year-old Caitlin has come a far way. The
86 free-verse poems in her book are all about her
personal experiences. About love, hope, heartache.
About the beautiful and mundane experiences that
each year brings.
“Growing up, I read poems by long-dead, ancient poets.
I loved the poems, but they weren’t my story. I wanted
a book by a young woman about what it’s like to be a
young woman, so I wrote it. A book that readers can
relate to and resonate with. And it is really pretty too,
filled with full-colour pages and images. So between the
poems about break-ups and the pressure to be pretty,
you can also expect beautiful images.”
Caitlin loves to spoil herself with food and guess what …
books. So it comes as no surprise that she is quite a book
collector. ‘Maybe a bit of a book hoarder rather?
Haha. My books are organised in colour order and
nothing makes me happier than staring up my
bookshelves. Especially when I notice my pretty in
pink book there as well.’
Although she does not have any plans for another
book just yet, she hopes that her book will inspire
others to pursue their dreams, despite how
intimidating they may seem. Right now, she is
enjoying the fact that she now has the freedom to
choose a new dream.
“But, this book won’t be the last. I would still like to
write about my experiences as a South African. I
think our country has learned lessons that the entire
world could benefit from learning too.”
Caitlin’s advice to anyone thinking of writing a book?
‘It is one thing to commit to starting your book. It is
much more important to commit to finishing your
book. I know so many incredibly talented writers
with hundreds of unfinished drafts. It is challenging
and terrifying and it should absolutely scare you a
little. But give yourself a deadline. And then finish it!’
Regine du Plessis: Consulting dietician
A compulsive list-maker, Regine can finally tick off ‘write a
recipe book’. Which any list maker will tell you is one of the
most liberating feelings ever!
Working as an in-house dietician for a food magazine, the
idea to write a recipe book lingered in the back of her mind.
Gaining heaps of knowledge and experience, her ‘one day’
scenario turned into many years of writing 1000kJ recipes.
Eventually, a brilliant opportunity came her way to design a
12-week family challenge to get healthier … with a 1000kJ
restriction per meal. Yay! Regine could finish what she started.
“Thirty-five years of collecting ideas, gaining experience as to
what patients need and want, six months of intense writing
and one and a half years of editing with the editor. Phew!
What an enriching and exciting journey.
“The whole process is absolutely a form of extended
character-testing and development. I got to confirm many
things about myself … my strengths, weaknesses, highs and
lows, tolerance levels, willingness to compromise, seeing
an editor’s point of view and staying true to myself and my
message. And then to get positive feedback from the readers
that my book made a difference. Best. Feeling. Ever.”
Regine has already completed the second manuscript
which will be a follow-on to the current format, but with the
inclusion of recipes for 18 specific lifestyle conditions.
Reading is almost just as important as eating healthy,
according to Regine, as she believes “it encourages a fertile
mind. I love to read biographies, autobiographies, historical
fiction, motivational books, cookbooks - yes, I read them from
cover to cover, and coffee table books.
“And preferably a hard copy. I love the feeling of turning
paper pages, rather than scrolling. I am by no means opposed
to electronic books, but then again, what would I fill my
library with if it weren’t for paper books? And as far as recipe
books go, I prefer to have them as a permanent fixture in
my kitchen.”
Regine’s advice for any aspiring writer is to write the book to
help others and make a difference. Writing a book for pure
financial gain is a pipedream for most authors. Believe in your
topic, then you are already halfway to having it accepted by a
publisher. Write from the heart and set aside a certain amount
of time every single day to write and work on the manuscript.
Ideally, complete the entire manuscript before submitting it
to a publishing house. Always seek a win-win between your
message and the requirements of the editor. Remain flexible.
“And then just jump into the deep end and do it, rather than
listening to too much prior advice before starting.”
Alta Strauss: Writer, motivational speaker and radio presenter
While Alta enjoys many things, nothing excites her more
than books. From reading the HAT Afrikaans dictionary to
psychology and philosophy books and then, to hold a new
book for the first time.
“I love everything about it, the crackling sound when you
open it for the first time. The smell of the paper and the ink.
The touch. And then there’s that incredible feeling holding a
hard copy of your own book in your hands.”
Alta is no newbie to writing. She’s been a co-author for many
inspirational books, but it is poetry that ultimately makes
her heart beat a little faster. Over the years she has penned
her thoughts and feelings in poetry form. Eventually, friends
hinted that she should really consider publishing it. Finally,
an opportunity came knocking. Just a few months ago,
Alta and René Roux published their first poetry book, Steeds
Vrou, sharing their losses and the hope they brought along.
Now on a roll, Alta’s very own poetry book, Net Ek, hits the
bookshelves this month. And what makes this book extra
special is that the striking cover image was taken by Alta’s
daughter, Esteè Strauss.
Not one to rest on her laurels, she’s already planning on
writing another book. But next time, it will be more about the
intriguing ways the mind work and how it influences how we
think and behave.
“So, you’ve got things you want to say, and you’ve probably
had a book idea for a long time. But actually writing it? Too
daunting? Well, I’m telling you, yes you can write it. Everyone
has at least one book in them, some people a hundred. We all
have something meaningful to say. So your message should
be clear, insightful, and genuinely helpful. And then get a
strong publishing team on board.
“When the whole process is finished, you’ll enjoy the
immense satisfaction of handing the book to someone who
will genuinely benefit from it.”
Alta’s favourite book of all time? 12 Rules for life by Dr Jordan
B. Peterson. “As a psychologist, he combines ancient wisdom
with decades of experience to provide twelve profound
and challenging principles for how to live a meaningful life,
from setting your house in order before criticising others
to comparing yourself to who you were yesterday. Truly
insightful and a brilliant read.”
When Alta is not reading or writing, she loves to go on
road trips, explore new places, and spending as much time
possible with people close to her heart.
“This past year taught me to take nothing in life for granted.
Forever is just a moment. It can be this very moment. So
make it count.”
ABOUT NET EK:
“This is a compilation of poetry I have written and re-wrote
over 20 years. It is my first thought ... bare, authentic and
honest. It deals with emotions and experiences we have
all felt sometime in our life ... loss, hope, intimacy, romance,
depression and adventures. With Net Ek, I hope that it
will help readers to articulate their own emotions and
experiences better.
To help them find
their truth and
meaning in a nonconfrontational
way, allowing them
to confront their
fears wilfully and
overcoming them
by doing so. We are
all human. More
the same than we
are different. We
are and should
all aspire not to
compete with
others, but with
ourselves. Always
trying to be a better
person than we
were yesterday.”
Candice Mes - Occupational
therapist in adult mental health
A little more than two years ago, the idea to write a
children’s book was sparked when Candice leisurely
strolled through a mall during the festive season.
‘It suddenly dawned on me how much Christmas
is portrayed by snow, jolly fat men and elves. It
crossed my mind that I would like to create a space
where a different story could be told, but with just
as much excitement and fun.’
It was only a few months later, when one night
Candice was struggling to fall asleep, that she put
pen to paper. And the first draft saw the light. “Many
more edits later followed by the publishing process
and I finally had the hard copy in my hands! I was
so grateful and excited. And at that moment all the
self-doubt I experienced during the writing process
just flew right out of the window.
“The past two years have been really tough. This
book was a little spark of joy and hope amidst the
chaos in the world. It helped me to stay positive
and gave me a new hobby and skill set –
working with a publisher, editing, marketing and
online publishing.”
And there is no stopping Candice now. She has
already completed the first draft of her next
children’s book.
“I love to hold and read books, especially to my
son, Levi. Children’s books in print allow you to
discuss the pictures, messages and emotions of the
characters with the young reader. It also creates
a unique sensory bonding experience in an era
where screen time is often misused.
“But apart from all this, writing is such a great
escape from my everyday job. Although
people do have the
misconception that writing a
children’s book is quick and easy.
Not true. It takes many hours of
editing and tweaking, making sure
the illustrations fit and that your
core message remains.”
Any advice for aspiring writers?
“Write about something you are
passionate about. This will not
only reflect in your story but also
help keep you focused through
the editing process. “And find a
publisher that fits your needs. If
you write for a specific genre,
look for companies that specialise
in that.”
The book Candice can read over
and over is Redeeming Love by
Francine Rivers. “It is a fictional tale
of love and redemption. Every
time I read it, I find new inspiration.
It is beautifully written. A book that
will move you while reading and
stick with you in the future.”
You’ll need ... any amount of fresh oysters,
shucked (the more the merrier we say); a
small cubes; and cucumber ribbons (discard
the outer skin). For the vinaigrette: ½ cup good
honey; 5 large fresh basil leaves; a good shake
of smoked chilli flakes; salt & pepper to taste.
OYSTERS, MUSSELS
SALMON FINE WINE &
Winemaker Mike Dawson enjoys his Journey’s End
Weather Station Sauvignon Blanc 2020 with his version
of white wine mussel soup. “It’s a fresh style of wine, with
beautiful natural acidity and tropical fruit flavours, which
makes it a perfect pairing with seafood, of which mussels
is my favourite. The freshness of the wine cuts through the
creaminess of the soup. This is a match made in heaven.”
You’ll need: 3kg fresh mussels; 2 onions, 1 leek and 2 celery
sticks (from his garden, he tells us, you may have to pop
into the greengrocer); 1 cup each of water, chicken broth
and Journeys End Weather Station Sauvignon Blanc (be a
little more generous if you are feeling adventurous). 1 cup
of clam juice (you can also buy canned clams and drain out
the juice, or if you can’t find canned clams, then substitute
with another cup of chicken broth); a quarter cup of fresh
parsley and 3 mashed garlic cloves (also from his garden); 1
cup cream; salt and pepper, of course
To make: Add onions, leeks, celery, parsley, garlic, water,
wine, chicken broth, clam juice, salt and pepper into a
potjie pot over hot coals, and bring this to boil. Reduce
the heat, add the mussels, cover, and simmer for five mins
or until mussels have opened. Add the cream right at the
end and you’re good to go. This recipe serves four, says
Mike, adding “but my girlfriend Tynika and I are more than
capable of finishing two servings each”.
SEXY CITY LIVING
Glam apartment living ... this must be the ultimate address!
We love a bit of self-confidence.
Aiming high and wanting to be at the
top of the game - any game - are, we
think, strong, sexy traits. And Steyn
City has never been shy about its
goal of becoming the number one
residential leisure development in
the world. In the world! Nothing shy
here. And with the launch of the City
Centre, it has taken one step closer
to reaching that objective. This new
development boasts it’s setting new
standards in urban apartment living.
Think more than 700 apartments
and 11 luxurious penthouses in a
completely pedestrianised zone.
There’ll be treed piazzas spilling
down a stepped hillside, which in
time will be lined with bespoke
retailers and restaurants, and rooftop
swimming pools offering private
spaces to relax in the sun.
There’s cutting-edge security technology
- including triple biometrics,
and the Centre’s own 24/7 security
nerve centre. There’s the 2000-acre
indigenous parkland with hundreds
of thousands of planted trees and
shrubs - so one of the biggest back
gardens in the world!
The apartments represent the apex in
luxe living, with each home boasting
a unique floor layout. High ceilings,
extra spacious rooms, double glazed
windows and air-conditioning; some
of the duplex apartments even have
their own dedicated internal lifts.
Other highlights include the Bluline
kitchens with appliances from
Gaggenau (those of us who know
our way around a kitchen are green
with envy ... this German brand is
the bee’s knees when it comes to
domestic appliances).
Leaving the apartments, there’s a
mind-boggling selection of options
for residents, from horse-riding at
the world-class Equestrian Centre
to golf at an 18-hole Nicklaus
design championship golf course.
In the parkland you’ll find a 45km
promenade for jogging and walking –
and since the track is well lit at night,
there’s no question of having to cut
short training because the sun is
setting. There is also a fully equipped
gym, outdoor exercise stations, and a
purpose built 50 km MTB track.
To coax families away from screens,
Steyn City has a number of children’s
play nodes, from a skate park to an
enchanted Pirate Ship, as well as the
new lagoon, complete with beachstyle
Laguna kiosk, water slides, beach
volleyball, pedalos and kayaks. Good
grief. Every day’s a holiday here. Need
more? Add in office space, Steyn
City School Campus, and a helistop,
so should you have to leave the
property, you can escape the traffic!
Talking helis, traffic and cars, the
centre has a super basement, big
enough for 2000 cars, especially
designed so that the piazzas and
walkways are closed to traffic and are
fully pedestrianised. Each lift core has
There’s a 2000 acre indigenous
its own signature design, made with
different materials (mosaic, timber,
granite and marble), so you’ll have a
point of reference that prevents you
getting lost. If you’re thinking run-ofthe-mill
dark, cramped and difficult to
manoeuvre basements, think again.
This super sub-basement is just
as beautiful as the rest of the City
Centre ... spacious, with high roofs
featuring cut-outs to create a sense
of volume and bring in ventilation,
and green lungs due to the densely
planted trees and greenery creating
a unique basement experience.
Not that you’d expect anything less
from a development that recently
made its appearance on the New
Show apartments and penthouses
showcase luxury living
Although the City Centre will be popular with those
who’ve taken permanent advantage of the
work-from-home option Covid’s given us, moved
out of town and are looking for a glam lock-upand-go
spot for their Joburg visits, these really are
Bilala Mabuza magnificent residences and will be sought after as a
permanent address.
But it is the opulently decorated show apartments and penthouses
that truly stand as a showcase of luxury living. Steyn City enlisted the
assistance of South Africa’s leading designers to create a signature look for
the eight homes which form part of City Centre’s showcase, which are the
apogee of style and sophistication.
In many of these homes, a special effort has been made to bring the
outdoors in. This was certainly the case for Silvio Rech and Lesley
Carstens of Rech + Carstens, who focused on creating a home in the sky
with an eclectic, individual style, which is made to live and grow with
the inhabitant.
Stephen Falcke - Stephen Falcke Interior Design - meanwhile, applied his
award-winning expertise to create a cosmopolitan, luxury sanctuary that
would appeal to the super-rich in its unique palette of Eau de Nil, which
mirrors the lagoon over which its views extend. Both penthouses boast
their own private rooftop plunge pools, and private lift lobbies.
In her one-bedroom apartment, Urban Glam’s Ayesha
Nobanda played off the grit of urban living with glamour and
sophistication, while Amanda Elliott of Design Collective -
whose three-bedroom duplex apartment stands out for its
customised wallpaper designs - also played with contrasts,
juxtaposing Manhattan-style apartment living with Steyn City’s
parkland setting.
The Private House Company’s Yvonne O’Brien’s design philosophy
- emphasising understated elegance - is clearly evidenced in her
four-bedroom, duplex apartment which, again, is imbued with an
accent on the luxurious.
Buzwe Mabuza of Design Dreams International took inspiration
for his two-bedroom simplex apartment from the global citizen
who feels as much at home at Steyn City as they do in New York
or London, and Donald Nxumalo’s (Donald Nxumalo Interior
Design) designer of a two-bedroom duplex apartment, feels the
ideal homeowner is someone who values quality – not just the
quality of their possessions, but quality of life.
Finally, Cocoon Lifestyle’s Bilala Mabuza added an unforgettable
touch to her gorgeous three-bedroom apartment with the
inclusion of pieces by some of South Africa’s most exciting
up-and-coming-artists.
afterwards. • Summer veggies can still
be sown this month.
We’re planting… Scabiosa ‘Flutter’ pure white
because a sprinkle of white flowers throughout
the garden makes it sparkle, especially at night.
Butterflies too love the flowers, which inspired
the name of this spring to autumn flowering
perennial. It is a neat, mounded plant for garden
beds, borders and containers. Plants grow in sun
or semi-shade, need regular but not excessive
watering and fertilising once a month. It is very
disease resistant. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
Cucumber “Crystal Apple’ (RAW) has
the shape of a Granny Smith apple
with a pale, greenish-white skin, but
the taste is pure cucumber with a
tang. The smooth, creamy fruit is best
eaten young, and is a bright, crunchy
addition to salads. It is a
compact growing plant.
Indoor plant of the month…
Get into the festive spirit with Christmas
cactus (Schlumbergera). This is a greenleaved
succulent that produces brilliantly
coloured pink, red or purple flowers at the
end of their hanging stems. Even though
they are succulents, they need evenly
moist soil when in flower and a humid
environment. Place plants in a position
that receives good indirect light, but not
sunlight. Plants will flower for several weeks.
They look fabulous in a hanging basket,
which encourages the plant to produce
more stems, or place in a position where
the stems can cascade. Apply a liquid
fertiliser every two weeks once the buds
form. Details: lvgplant.co.za
Veggie of the month:
Cucumbers are a super salad veggie;
crunchy, cool on the tongue and caloriefree.
They grow easily from seed, and
for good germination sow two to three
seeds in one hole. Don’t ask why, it just
seems to work! If you don’t have space,
grow cucumbers vertically, by tying and
training them onto a wooden trellis,
along a fence, tee-pee or home-made
frame. Cucumbers grown this way are
less likely to suffer from powdery mildew
because the leaves stay dry. Cucumbers
need plenty of water during hot and
dry periods. The best form of watering is
flood watering so that the leaves don’t
get wet. Feed with a balanced fertiliser
(2:3:2) two or three times during the
growing season.
There are, we recently discovered, so many reasons to visit Paternoster on the Cape’s West Coast. All
whitewashed cottages, long stretches of beach and icy waters (for those who believe in the benefits
of cold water swimming). More (mostly really exceptional) restaurants than you’d imagine in a small
seaside town, and plenty of adventure for those who like to more than lie sipping cocktails in the sun.
Plenty of places to stay, too ... with our first option being the Gonana Guest House. Why? Well, firstly
it’s perched right on the Bekbaai beach on the quieter side of town, with endless views out over the
ocean, and bordered by the Columbine Nature Reserve. Originally a family home called Whalesong, it’s
now owned by Swedish entrepreneur and interior designer Jonas (namesake of the biblical whale tale!)
Sandström, who, together with his partner, has transformed the house, and made it Paternoster’s first
sustainable and environmentally conscious guest house ... another reason why it’s should be top of the
where-to-stay list.
If you care about the environment, and by now don’t we all, Gonana is effectively off the grid, and is
completely environmentally ethical. Solar power provides the electricity, rainwater feeds the house,
there are waterwise showers and grey water is recycled for loos and for use in the indigenous gardens.
With his motto of ‘think global, buy local’, Jonas used only local builders and contractors, furniture was
crafted locally, even the blankets, hand towels, and bathroom amenities were made locally.
But off the grid by no means indicates less luxury. The eight guest rooms are charmingly decorated ...
all natural hues and feel-me textures; some lead directly onto the beach, others open up onto terraces
or onto the pool. There is one self-catering room, which makes sense to book if you’re planning on a
longish stay, and from mid-December, two four-sleeper self-catering cottages will be available. With
fully equipped kitchens, dining areas and patios, these are perfect for those wanting total privacy.
Guests meet in the upstairs room-with-a-view ... where there’s a jolly excellent breakfast served, as well
as endless teas, refreshments and local snacks (think Darling Toffees) for in-between-meal-treats.
For lunch and dinners - guests walk into town and choose an eatery that appeals. There’s Wolfgat
(ranked Best Restaurant in Africa this year), the amazing Voorstrandt, right on the beach and with great
views alongside your fish and chips, and Waffle Wharf at Whales Rib, where the waffles are sweet and
generously sized. A highlight is Leeto ... unexpected, as we weren’t thinking fine dining, but it is - and
we say this not at all lightly - world class. It’s our must-do choice. A. Maz. Ing!
For those adventurous travellers - there’s e-biking with Wow e-Bikes along the beach or up to the
lighthouse in the Cape Columbine Reserve (loads of va va voom power to get you up the inclines and
through the deep sand), kayaking (with plenty of seal spotting and, if you’re lucky, whale sighting, too);
or just long walks along the beach (to work off that waffle).
Gonana is derived from the Zulu word embrace ... it’s fitting not only for this warm, welcoming guest
house (which is the newest member of the Cape Country Routes stable), but for the town, too. A really
lovely destination for your next holiday.
Rates from R1620 a night, the self-catering cottages from R1400 a night for the unit, and there are
always specials worth enquiring about. Details: capecountryroutes.com and gonanaguesthouse.com
Can’t get to the coast this year? This is almost as good as the real thing. Get
lost in the pages of Wild Seas, by National Geographic photographer Thomas
Peschak, who, when he’s not underwater, calls Cape Town home. In the book,
he’s documenting the beauty and fragility of underwater life, and the majesty
of wild coastlines. From gregarious gray whales in the waters of Baja California
to manta rays in the Maldives, from sharks in a feeding frenzy to sea turtles
the size of bears ... the book shows off the gems of the oceans as well as the
darker side - the pollution, overfishing and climate change. Page after page
after glorious page of images - from southern Africa and the Galápagos, the
Seychelles and the Maldives, and so many more spectacular destinations
which he explored with little more than a mask, fins and a camera. A
magnificent buy, which will bring joy long after the Summer beach holiday is
over. HPH Publishing, R750 at book stores or from hphpublishing.co.za. Once
you’ve poured over the book, watch Peschak’s TED talk Dive Into an Ocean
Photographer’s World, which has been viewed more than a million times.
A Don Papa hamper
Welcome to Sugarlandia and the legendary spirit
of Don Papa Rum. A premium aged, small-batch
rum from the island of Negros in the Philippines,
it’s created on the fertile foothills of the active
volcano Mt. Kanlaon, where the finest sugar
cane is milled to produce sweet, rich molasses.
Sugarlandia is the spiritual home of Don Papa
Rum ... although a fictional place, it’s a magical
and mysterious world where things are not
always as they seem, time is fluid and senses are
heightened. Don Papa is aged in American oak
barrels, that give it a light amber colour, and is
light and fruity on the nose, smooth and delicate
in the mouth with a long-textured finish. With
distinctive hints of vanilla, honey and candied
fruit, it’s great on the rocks or in an exotic cocktail
that will transport your mind to sun, sea, sand
and the spirit of Sugarlandia this Summer.
