I have a new go-to drink
and its whiskey. In my 62 years,
I remember trying it once and
thinking it was nothing special.
Then I had the opportunity to visit
Denver, Colorado, and go on a
whiskey tasting tour.
I got a history lesson but more
importantly, I learned there is a
special way to drink it to get the
full experience and taste. Science
is actually involved and a chemical
reaction is required to bring out
the flavor but more about that
later. All I can say is I am hooked.
WHY IS IT A
WOMEN’S DRINK?
• No Fat
• Low Carb (Standard shot contains
.04g in the form of sugar which is
transformed into energy as soon
as it enters the body.)
• Antioxidant (contains ellagic acid)
• Delicious taste
• A certain cache or aura of
sophistication is added when
ordering a whiskey!
WHAT IS WHISKEY?
Whiskey is any booze distilled
from fermented grain mash
except for corn, which does not
need to be aged. There are five
ingredients: water, grain, yeast,
oak barrels, and time. Whiskey is
distilled at a minimum of 40% and
a maximum of 94.8% alcohol by
volume (ABV).
There are different types of
whiskeys:
• Bourbon – is made in the US, 51%
from corn. After being distilled,
the spirit must be stored at
no more than 125 proof, for a
minimum two years
• Tennessee Whiskey – most
famous is Jack Daniels, same
as bourbon, but put through a
charcoal filtering process
• Scotch – must be made in
Scotland, from malted barley,
aged in oak casks for no less
than three years, typically 4
years, ABV less than 94.8
• Rye - Canada distills rye and
has since the country was first
settled. It is produced with
varying corn-rye ratios as there
are no rules in place regarding
the minimum amount of rye
mash. Alberta Premium is
100% rye.
• Irish Whiskey - from the
republic of Ireland or Northern
Island distilled to 94.8, aged in
wooden casks for three years.

• Stranahans Single Malt: It is the
number one American single
barley malt whiskey in the US.
It uses Rocky Mountain water to
cut to 94 proof. Handcrafted in a
non-chill filtered system.
• A.D. Laws Four Grain Straight
Bourbon: Bottled at 95 proof,
aged minimum three years in
new oak barrels, it marries corn
and Colorado wheat, rye, and
barley. Won 2016 Silver Medal
at San Francisco’s World Spirits
competition.

EXPERIENCE IT
1. Pour the whiskey into a
tulip glass.
2. Slowly roll the glass at a
forty-five-degree angle
and then stand the glass
straight up.
3. Look for thick runs (legs)
of whiskey down the
inside of the glass. The
thicker the run, the lower
the alcohol content
4. Move the glass 6 inches
away and breathe 3
times through the nose
and mouth. This is the
top-shelf whiskey and
prepares your mouth for
the taste of the whiskey.
5. Then do the
“Chattanooga Chew”:
Take a small sip and
“chew” the whiskey for
3 or 4 seconds. Swallow,
feel the heat, and
experience the strong
spice kick!
6. Next, add two drops (yes,
drops) of water. Water
is the most important
ingredient. As the alcohol
and water combine,
the water causes an
exothermic reaction.
The liquid temperature
initially increases by
about 2°C/3.5°F causing
the liquid to “open up”
and release more of the
volatile aromas. This also
creates a cooling effect
on the tongue and makes
the palate more receptive
to salty and fruity tastes,
rather than sweet and
spicy. If you swirl it again,
you will see an oily sheen
on the top.

THE HISTORY
OF WHISKEY
Whiskey is Ancient!
Whiskey is the product of the
distillation of fermented grain.
The first records of the process
were found in the archeological
digs of millennia BC Babylon
and Mesopotamia. Initially used
for the creation of perfumes
and aromas, distillation 2 nd
slowly spread across the ancient
civilizations where it received
numerous adaptations and
improvements, finally finding
its home behind the walls of the
European Christian monasteries.
Which Came First,
the Scottish or Irish?
Well, history tells us that they
both had firsts that contributed to
the rise of whiskey drinking.
• The first written recording of
whiskey in Europe was in 1494.
Scotland’s Exchequer granted
malt to Friar John Cor to make
1500 bottles.
• In 1608 Ireland’s Old Bushmills
Distillery became the first
licensed whiskey distillery in the
world.
Whiskey On to
North American Soil
1775 saw whiskey used as a
form of currency in America.
During the Old West days,
the saying here (in Colorado) was
“whiskey is for drinking and water
is for fighting over.”
Then Prohibition (1920 – 1933)
came and decimated the industry
in the US. It forced the making
underground into the arms of
organized crime. It reduced the
expansion and technological
advancement of the industry.
Even with the end of prohibition
in 1933, it took until the ’70s for
the industry to regroup and move
forward. It also helped to raise the
profile of the Canadian rye variety.

Dorottya Willet Szabo adores
Paris. After all, it was where she
traveled with the important man
in her life and like many women,
the City of Love drew her in.
Her affinity for Paris is obvious
from the moment you step inside
her atelier. A classic Eiffel Tower
stands stately to one side and
serves as an Instagrammable
backdrop for women as they try
on her beautiful creations. As your
eye travels over the jewel-colored
dresses lining the walls you see
touches of Paris nestled about.
Dori is a designer and the
owner of Paris Vogue Apparel.
After spending over 35 years in the
fashion industry she has a unique
skill set that sets her in a category
of specialists.
She possesses that chic joie
de vivre one expects from a
Parisienne but in fact, she was
born in Hungary. Tea and treats
are already waiting for the team
as they bustle about getting
ready for the fashion shoot and
interview.
We are getting a glimpse into
her fascinating journey through
different cultures and countries
and are about to learn how she
came to realize her dream. Dori
always thought a bridal dress
shop would be a good business
when she decided to slow down
and is thrilled to see it realized
even though it launched just as
COVID began. Wedding dresses
are only one facet of her business
though as she also dresses actors
and actresses here in Hollywood
North.

DOLL HAUTE COUTURE
STARTS IT ALL
Her first foray into the world of
fashion started in her childhood
creating haute couture for her
doll. She remembers her mother’s
angst when at four years of age,
Dori used her mother’s favorite
skirt to create doll clothes.
When she was older, she
returned wine and beer bottles to
fund her fabric habit. Sometimes it
wasn’t quite enough though and
she had to be innovative. Like the
time she used the curtains which
belonged to the Communist Party
to sew her and her boyfriend
matching shirts.
Dori has always had an
unconventional approach to life.
She started her first business
in the Bahamas in 1985 by chance.
Traveling with her boyfriend, she
was a beach babe. Someone took
notice of the daring sexy bikini
held together with string she had
put together and asked her to
make them one. Dori remembers
she sold them on the beach in
plastic bags, sealed with an iron.
Dori has always had
an unconventional
approach to life.

In 1989 Dori opened her first
Vancouver men’s boutique
specializing in custom-made
shirts and suits. Her business
flourished with three more
locations opening over the next
years; The Bay, Nordstrom, and
Park Royal.
Then in 1991, Dori had the
opportunity to design and
manufacture leather garments
for ladies and men. It was in New
Delhi, India. The people were very
poor, and Dori had the chance to
give jobs to 200 people who then
had the means to provide for
their families. She counts it as one
of the most rewarding aspects
of her career. She remembers
the fabric shopping was simply
amazing and the range of fabric,
like stunning silks, was so unlike
in her childhood sewing days it
was overwhelming.
With the internet serving as an
industry disrupter, bespoke men’s
wear offered online made the
men’s clothing space untenable.
So, in 1997 Dori decided to pivot
to women’s special occasions
and bridal wear.
WORKING WITH STARS
We see pictures of Halle Berry
in her catsuit, and other famous
people Dori has worked with on
the walls of her shop. Sharon
Stone, Anthony Hopkins, and Tom
Cruise are just a few. Dori speaks
highly of Halle Barry and her
friendliness and kindness. She
found Tom Cruise was delightful
to work with too.
Dori provides on-the-spot
alterations, designs, and copies of
designs to the movie industry. She
showed me a stunning wedding
dress which was identical to a
Valentino. Annabeth Gish wore it
in the movie Gone Mom.
Dori shares she made a suit
for Michel Bublé before he was
famous. He was on his way to Las
Vegas and said he wished it was
Armani. Dori told him soon you
will be famous and will be able
to afford any Armani and that is
exactly what happened.
COVID 19 has been brutal on
the fashion industry. There is
cautious optimism that the world
is on the upswing and events are

starting to happen. COVID has
meant looking outside the box.
Dori is pivoting again to work on
other opportunities, embrace
social media, and look at more
fashion and trade shows. One
approach she is finding rewarding
is holding private showings and
tea parties.
Dori feels personal service has
become even more important to
her business equation. She speaks
to a recent wedding where she
was providing all the groom and
groomsmen attire. On the day
before the wedding, at the final
fitting, an issue became apparent.
So, she had to send them on their
way without their clothes. She told
them they would be delivered the
next morning. After she and her
team worked through the night,
they chartered a helicopter to get
them to the island destination.
Longevity in fashion requires
a responsive approach and an
unwavering commitment to
ensuring the client’s vision comes
to fruition. Dori is a success
because she makes sure the
designs of women’s dreams come
true.

to stand out,
not fit in

Do you stand out or stand in?
Have you ever tried to fit inside a
box that was too small, contorting
your limbs and squishing all your
body parts just to fit in? I am sure
you have seen a few entertaining
videos of cats squishing
themselves into small boxes or
paper bags. Perhaps you made
forts out of blankets and boxes
when you were a child so you
could tuck yourself in and hide
away in your own little world. The
important question to ask yourself
is, “Am I still trying to fit inside the
box, play small, and hide my true
self from the rest of the world?”
I remember as a child building
forts using furniture, pillows,
and blankets. I would add my
favorite stuffed animals and other
comforting trinkets and I would
crawl inside my own little world
and feel safe for a while. While
my home was safe, the rest of the
world felt big, intimidating, and
painful to me. As an empath and
a healer, I could physically and

emotionally sense and feel all the
pain of others in my own body
like constant thorns. I came to the
conclusion that it was hard and
painful to be me.
I tried to fit in and pretend to
be someone other than who I was
for a long time but in the end, it
led me on a path of more pain
and suffering. Denying my unique
gift as a healer was dishonoring to
who I am at the core of my being.
Trying to be like others instead of
giving myself permission to be me
create a feeling of claustrophobia
that was strangling my creativity
and keeping me playing small. I
didn’t want to stand out or make
anyone feel inferior. I didn’t want to
outshine others, because I didn’t
want them to feel bad; yet at the
same time, I was trying to prove my
worthiness and follow my dream
to save the world. Growing up I
wanted to save others more than
I wanted to save myself. It was a
constant internal tug-of-war that
used up so much of my energy it

was exhausting—it left me feeling helpless and
disconnected from my sense of self.
It is through the lens of fear and judgment
that we make decisions to go with the crowd,
follow like a herd of sheep, not rock the boat,
lie low, play small, be accepted, and fit in a box
that doesn’t stand out from the rest. We are
taught to try and fit in. But, we are not meant
to fit in. We are meant to stand out. If we were
meant to be carbon copies of each other, we
wouldn’t have been born with our unique
features, gifts, talents, and personalities.
The perspective we choose and the lens
we use to see life will determine what we see.
Snowflakes are a great example. When we look at
the snow falling from the sky, we see snowflakes.
From a distance, they all look the same. But
when we zoom in and take a closer look, we
can see that each snowflake is unique. No two
snowflakes are the same. Each snowflake has
unique characteristics. As a child, I was fascinated
by that. Depending on your perspective, the
snowflakes look the same or completely different.
You can say the same thing about the leaves on
a tree. When we take a closer look, each one has
a uniqueness that is sometimes subtle and at
other times more obvious.
Now I am not saying all of this to make us
feel separate from each other, but to emphasize
that we each have a unique role to play here on
this Earth at this time. We are all connected at
the core of who we are and at the same time we
are meant to stand out and share our unique

gifts with the world. As long as we
are trying to be like everyone else,
we will always feel inadequate and
find evidence of how we are not
enough. When we are trying to fit
into a box that someone else built
and live up to the standards that
others have set, we will always fall
short; we will never fit in; we will
always feel like we don’t belong.
This creates a fundamental
experience of separation.
The good news is that when
we stand up, own our uniqueness
by being fully authentic, we
each play an essential role in the
healing of the whole. Every single
one of us has an essential part to
play. When we watch a movie, we
can see how each character adds
value and depth to the overall
script. If everyone were playing
the same character, the movie
would be a bust.
Some of us have a small role
and some have a bigger role to
play, but each role is essential. One
person’s version of playing small
may be another person’s version
of playing big. It is not about
comparing ourselves with others.
Comparison is a game of judgment
that makes us feel inadequate no

cooperation, we
shift into being a
contribution to all
of humanity.
matter what we are doing or not
doing. By comparing ourselves,
we will collect enough evidence
to convince ourselves that we
will never be, do, or have enough.
Comparison always crushes
creativity, insight, and intuition.
When we shift from the fear
of comparison to the energy of
cooperation, we shift into being
a contribution to all of humanity.
We honor the role each of us
has to play and we are willing
to contribute to the whole by
playing our role fully, wholly, and
completely. We return to love and

harmony. We can stand strong,
united in love.
Our heart holds the key and
our script for our part in the play
is placed inside us. So how do
we get out of our head and into
our hearts? How do we shift our
perspective and open our minds
to receive guidance from within?
It is about tuning into your
heart and being truthful about
how you are showing up in life.
I encourage you to ask yourself
the following questions. First, take
ten deep breaths. Yes, right now.
Stop and take ten deep breaths.
Imagine yourself in your mind
knowing that you can take an
elevator down into your heart.
Go down, down, down deep into
your heart space. As you read
the following questions, let the
answers come from deep within.
Go with the first answer that pops
into your awareness and write
it down (even if it doesn’t make
sense).
• How am I shrinking, hiding,
and dimming my light?
• How am I playing small?
• How am I trying to fit in?
• What role am I meant to play?
• Am I willing to play full out?
• Am I willing to play my part in
the grand plan?
• Am I willing to stand up and
stand out and be a full authentic
expression of myself?
• In what areas of my life am
I showing up fully to play my
part?
Many of you may be wondering
how to know what your part is.
You can’t know in your head, but
I guarantee your heart knows.
As long as we are using the
limited programmed filters of our
minds, we will never truly know
how we are meant to stand out.
Our mind is full of fear-based
filters, judgment, and the fear of
judgment, along with a long list of
perceived limitations of the world.
If we drop into our hearts, we
can tap into a knowing that goes
beyond our mind. It is a knowing

that resides in our hearts. It is
our heart that holds the key and
specific directions to our life
script. All we need to do is get out
of our heads and into our hearts
and let the directions come. As
with a recipe, each ingredient will
be given, and each direction will
be provided one step at a time.
The world doesn’t need you
to fit in. What the world needs is
for you to play your part—stand
up, stand out, and stand strong.
You have a unique role and an
essential part to play. The world
needs you now more than ever.
Are you willing to play your part?
Say YES! Just say YES!

Dear Ms. Mostly,
I think I have a sexually
transmitted disease (STD). It is so
embarrassing, and I can’t find the
gumption to tell anyone, not even
my doctor. I know. At my age, I
should know all about sexually
transmitted diseases.
My husband and I divorced
years ago. I was feeling lonely and
I thought I would be brave and
try this online dating. After a few
tries, I met Hank and it was just
wonderful to meet someone who
made me feel sexy and desirable.
It was great not to have to worry
about pregnancy. Hank told me
he hadn’t been with anyone since
his wife passed away. Everything
was going great but then, after
a few times, Hank decided
we should ease up a bit. Now,
something is wrong. I am in a
panic and Hank is not returning
my calls.

Dear Super Trustful Dater,
If you’ve spent time on dating
sites you know EVERYONE lies! The
photos are from their university
days and don’t include a shot
of the colostomy bag they wear
(true story), or the 125 pounds
they’ve put on since. It’s certainly
possible that Hank has lied about
where he’s been dipping his wick
and what kind of bacterial soup
lurked therein.
There is absolutely no need to
be embarrassed about seeking
medical help as you may not even
have an actual sexually transmitted
disease (STD) but possibly a UTI
from the renewed activity. Either
way, look after your own body and
don’t count on hearing from Hank
with any useful suggestions.
Beyond your body, you have to
protect your heart from hurt and
your bank balance from fraud.
That’s the unfortunate side effect
of a technologically driven dating
scene which frustrates real,
honest people and allows creeps
to flourish.
If you need help navigating
these waters and, let’s face it,
who doesn’t check out your local
community college or community
center for courses on safe online
dating and how best to survive
and thrive in this new world.
