Surfing action, theatre and sparkly Christmas lights … 

the festive season is here and we are excited!

And then there was light! The much-loved annual Durban 

Botanic Gardens Trail of Lights has finally got the green 

light to go ahead again this year! The fun kicks off on 3 

December and runs until 3 January. Now in its fifth year, 

the Trail of Lights is a wonderful showcase of literally 

thousands of lights in world-class lighting displays, as 

well as nightly entertainment, charity activations and a 

food garden. To ensure the safety of patrons there are 

now three entry times, 6pm (R70), 7pm (R65) and 8pm 

(R60), allowing for social distancing. Tickets are very 

limited and there are ticket sales at the door. Details:

The Ballito Pro presented by O’Neill is back! 

After sadly having to be postponed earlier 

this year, the much-anticipated highlight of the SA 

surfing calendar, The Ballito Pro (the world’s longest 

running professional surfing event) is on! Taking 

place at KwaDukuza’s main beach, Willard Beach in 

Ballito, from 9 to 19 December, this year’s event is 

themed ‘we are growing’ or ‘siyakhula’. Apart from 

the phenomenal, exciting surfing, visitors can look 

forward to enjoying loads of entertainment like 

extreme sports demos, beach action, retail and 

fun activities for the little ones. The ‘sundowner’ 

and ‘after dark’ elements to the festival will include 

live entertainment, live music, a movie night and 

a Christmas fair! There is even an environmental 

awareness campaign running alongside the event.

panto? The Playhouse is delighted to be 

producing for the first time the annual KickstArt 

pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Golfing for Bloom 

The Bloom Centre school for special needs children and NPO recently 

hosted a wonderfully-successful golf day fundraiser at Simbithi Country 

Club. More than 104 golfers took part and everyone enjoyed complimentary 

Colombo coffee on arrival and a fun cocktail party, set up by 

Extreme Events after the game. The Bloom kiddies opened the evening

love story 

Simbithi-based Thandana Bags owners, Carla and Stanton 

Ashton’s story is one of hard work, dedication, humility and love! 

We caught up with them for a little ‘safari fun’ at Rain Farm Game 

Lodge recently and found out about their journey.

between Thandana and local 

travel stylist Jemma Wild 

With golden ringlets blowing in the wind, big excited eyes darting around and 

both her parents doting attentively over her, little Chloe Ashton has one mission 

as she climbs on board the vehicle at the start of our game drive: she wants to 

see a giraffe. 

Chloe’s mom Carla and dad Stanton are the owners and founders of well-known, 

home-grown luggage brand, Thandana bags. Chloe is their ‘miracle baby’. “It took 

seven years and four IVF cycles for us to finally be blessed with our little girl,” says 

Carla as she carefully pulls Chloe’s hair up into a ponytail. 

A die-hard Thandana bag fan myself, I admit I was excited to spend a bit of time 

with the creators of this high-quality, trendy and very proudly local brand. 

Despite their obvious success though, both Carla and Stanton are incredibly 

down-to-earth and were almost as excited as Chloe when we saw the first giraffe 

popping its head out behind a large acacia tree. 

Stanton and Carla grew up in Empangeni and their families were close friends 

throughout their childhood. Carla admits to having ‘had her eye’ on Stanton 

growing up, but says it was only much later, after they had finished school and 

both spent a few years working and travelling overseas, that they met up again 

in Durban and started their relationship. They’ve been married for 12 years. 

Thandana (which means ‘love everyone’ in Zulu) was a project started by Carla 

in 2010. At the time, she outsourced production to CMT factories and only sold 

handmade fabric bags on consignment to a few KZN stores. With many years of 

experience in retail, Carla’s father suggested she introduce leather to her range 

and start her own small factory, which she did, with just four people. 

It was in 2017, after Chloe was born, that Stanton (who has a background in the 

supply chain industry, owning fashion stores and project development) decided 

to join forces with Carla so they could grow the brand together. They now have a 

staff compliment of 30 people. 

“As challenging as it is to work with your better half, it’s the best decision we have 

ever made. Our personalities work so well together and we love being able to 

create and share our success as a team,” says Carla. 

Speaking about the brand and company ethos, Carla says Thandana was built 

with the goal of being a proudly South African brand that adds fun to travelling 

and family living. “We also focus on employment, upskilling and improving the 

lives of our local community. It is very important to us to showcase the incredible 

quality of workmanship and materials that we have right here in South Africa. 

Our ethos has always been to keep it local and we ensure that our fabric, leather 

and straps are sourced locally and responsibly.” 

From having only a few bags in the range initially, Thandana now has over 126 

designs with over 2000 variants, 15 different leathers and 18 different printed 

fabrics in the range. Their success, they believe, has come down to the fact 

that they have tried to stay humble, 

work smart and believe in their staff 

as much as their product. And they 

always keep God in the plans. “Each 

morning a different member of the 

team has their turn to share prayers 

with the team. We believe that the 

customer is not the king but rather 

the CEO, because he or she will 

decide whether your business is 

going to rise or fall,” says Stanton. 

The juggle of running a business and 

raising little Chloe is real, but Carla 

says her goal when starting Thandana 

was always to be able to have ‘flexitime’ 

with her family. “I’ve managed 

this through planning and lots of 

structure. Having your better half as 

your business partner makes a world 

of difference, too!” Stanton strives to 

work smart, work while others are 

sleeping, not waste time and get 

home as soon as possible. “And when 

you are home, make sure your mind 

is too.” 

The Ashtons are a beach, sea and sun 

loving family and spend lots of time 

in the ocean. Having lived in Simbithi 

for almost three years, they say they 

love every minute of living on the 

North Coast and have made lifelong 

friendships. “It’s been great living 

closer to Carla’s family. The support 

has been incredible and Chloe now 

lives closer to her cousins.” 

Looking towards 2022, Carla says she 

hopes that the year ahead brings 

some normality back to our very 

‘abnormal’ current way of living. 

Stanton says, “I hope that people can 

be more grateful for the things they 

have that are right in front of them, 

rather than being distracted by what 

they don’t have. The past two years 

have taught us that life is fragile and 

we shouldn’t waste it.”

miss ballito 

Bubbly, beautiful, brainy … this year’s Miss Ballito winner Cikizwa Vilakazi is the 

full package. We caught up with the Stanger-born screenwriting and directing 

student to find out a little more about her and her future goals. 

“I came into this journey looking for growth and that’s exactly what I found,” says 20-year-old Cikizwa, who grew up 

spending weekends and holidays on the beaches of Ballito and Salt Rock. Now in her second year at AFDA (school of 

motion picture and live performance) and living in Umhlanga, Cikizwa tells us about her Miss Ballito journey. 

Tell us a bit about your studies and why you chose the film industry? 

I always knew I wanted to be in the media industry. During my senior phase of high school my parents noticed how much I 

loved dramatic arts and bringing productions to life and encouraged me to look into a career that would allow me to follow 

that passion. I love directing and screenwriting, especially the process of taking a concept, putting it onto paper as literary 

artwork and then watching it come to life. I’ve always been fascinated by the work that goes into visual storytelling. 


I came into this journey looking for growth and 

that’s exactly what I found. I wouldn’t change a 

single thing about the entire experience.

THE NATURAL WAY 

What prompted you to enter the Miss Ballito pageant? 

I had been in search of a platform that would provide me with the tools to grow 

as an individual for a long time. After researching Miss Ballito and the journey that 

the finalists embark on, I decided to enter. The platform focuses on and highlights 

values and morals that resonate with who I am and the woman I want to be one 

day. 

Tell us about your Miss Ballito experience? 

My Miss Ballito journey was a very transformative one. I was hesitant at first about 

putting myself in the public eye, being subject to criticism and worried about 

feelings of inadequacy, but that quickly changed as soon as the journey actually 

began. It was a massive eye-opener for me about the broader issues that different 

communities face and the way we individually perceive life. We received coaching 

on how to deal with day-to-day life and having control over our emotions and 

reactions to different situations. I came into this journey looking for growth and 

that’s exactly what I found. I wouldn’t change a single thing about the entire 

experience. The memories I have, from building bonds with all the beautiful finalists 

and being under the guidance of Heidie and Karen (Miss Ballito coordinators), are 

memories that will forever be close to my heart. 

How did you feel when you were crowned Miss Ballito 2021? 

To say I was over the moon is an understatement. I am so excited to start my 

journey and I really hope to make the North Coast community proud during my 

reign. Being trusted with this title has opened up so many opportunities for me to 

actually implement what I had wished for when I entered Miss Ballito. I will now be 

able to not only continue growing as an individual but also to help the community 

that raised me grow as well. 

What are your goals in terms of giving back to the community as 

Miss Ballito? 

I really want to focus on implementing the next phases of the charity project that 

I started as a finalist - an all-round educational and entrepreneurship program. I 

have already started with the pre-school phase, where I donated to and renovated 

a school in Stanger. Now I want to look at issues affecting primary school goers, like 

the need for school shoes, stationary and sanitary pads. The major and final phase 

of this project is implementing a tertiary and entrepreneurship programme in 

schools that are not fortunate enough to have access to these opportunities. I have 

also been tasked with starting a new Rotaract Club and working through Rotaract 

to uplift our community and others around us. 

Where do you want to see yourself in 10 years time? 

Hopefully as the owner of a multi-award-winning digital media production house. 

I also hope to be in the position to start a funding and bursary programme for 

others who aspire to be in the media industry as there are currently limited 

institutions that provide financial aid in this sector. I’d also like to be the writer and 

art director of a Netflix-commissioned series or film and I would also love to have 

completed, or be in the process of completing, my PhD in Film and Media studies. 

What do you hope to find under the Christmas tree this year? 

This year I have already been blessed with far more than I would have ever 

imagined, but the cherry on top would be finding a box with a set of car keys that 

has my name on the key chain!

Paralympian! 

South African Paralympic athlete Tyrone Pillay recently 

competed in the 2020 Paralympics held in Tokyo. We 

asked him about the experience and his incredible 

journey to get there. 

From being bullied by kids (and even 

teachers) at school, to raising his 

country’s flag as a member of the 

South African Paralympic squad for 

the second time, congenital amputee 

Tyrone is proof that anything is 

possible – if you are willing to work 

hard enough for it. 

Originally from Durban, the 41-yearold 

shot put champion says, despite 

being born disabled, his dream was 

always to represent his country as 

a sportsman. “I am living proof that 

dreams do come true. I was three 

years old when I dreamt of one day 

competing for my country. Thirtythree 

years later I climbed onto the 

podium with a medal round my neck.” 

Tyrone walked away with a bronze 

medal in the 2016 Rio Paralympics, 

breaking both the South African and 

African shot put records in the same 

year. He has competed in four world 

championships and was named KZN 

Sportsman of the year with a disability 

and KZN Sports Personality of the year 

in 2014. 

Athletics wasn’t originally where 

Tyrone’s passion lay. “Cricket was that 

for me,” he says, “but despite playing 

competitively for years, I could sadly 

never live out my dream of playing 

for South Africa as my disability was 

always going to be a hurdle that I 

wasn’t ready to face.” 

It was when he was watching the 

Beijing Paralympics on television in 

2008 that he realised his future lay 

elsewhere. “I saw amazing people 

competing with no arms, no legs, 

in wheelchairs and some that were 

blind. I realised this was for me and 

I started my Paralympic dream the 

following year. I decided I needed to 

go where I would be respected for 

who I was.” 

Growing up with a disability was easy, 

Tyrone says, until he started going 

to school. “Kids were mean to me 

and used to call me names. It was a 

challenging time and I didn’t know 

how to cope. I even had a primary 

school teacher who used to bully 

me. It’s not something I’ve ever really 

spoken about, but I think it made me 

who I am today. It wasn’t easy, but 

with the support of my family I was 

able to overcome it.”

Tyrone says it was a complicated and

challenging journey to get there. “There were many issues 

around Covid, like not being able to compete overseas 

and often not having access to training facilities, but it 

was more than that. As athletes, we are routine-based and 

focused and Covid took us out of our comfort zones. I 

needed to qualify for the games and there were very few 

competitions for me to achieve this. It was very stressful. I 

only qualified in July 2021.” 

The Tokyo Paralympic Games were completely different 

to what Tyrone had previously experience in Rio. “Us older 

athletes in particular struggled with the fact that there 

were no crowds to engage with and to cheer us on. The 

younger guys seemed to manage better, as they didn’t 

really have anything to measure it against.” 

On the day of his event Tyrone faced another tough 

obstacle: the weather. “The conditions were tougher than 

I could ever have imagined. The rain made it extremely 

difficult, especially with competing on a prosthetic leg. 

I knew I was in good shape and throwing well, but I 

finished in eighth place and was quite disappointed. You 

prepare for five years for this one moment, only for it to be 

taken away by factors out of your control. It’s sometimes 

difficult to come to terms with.” 

Despite the challenges, Tyrone is proud of his 

achievements, which he says he would never have had 

were it not for the hard work he’s put in over the years. 

“Hard work and dedication pay off. Most people with 

talent don’t work hard to achieve their goals and this is 

why I love the saying, ‘hard work beats talent when talent 

doesn’t work hard.’” 

Helping others, particularly children, overcome their 

limitations and seeing them get the opportunities he 

did as a child by way of having a prosthetic limb, is 

another passion of Tyrone’s. He has worked with and is an 

ambassador for the Jumping Kids non-profit organisation, 

which provides lower limb prosthetic solutions to children 

living with amputation from previously disadvantaged 

backgrounds. “Whether able or disabled, we are all equal. 

Learning and accepting myself taught me to be confident 

in who I am and I hope to teach others this same selfbelief.”

When Westbrook writer, pastor, speaker and mother Jess Basson was diagnosed with 

adult ADHD earlier this year, she discovered the key she was looking for to unlock the 

pages of her first book, Empty Cages. 


Like many women, before she was 

diagnosed with ADHD, Jess was 

treated for anxiety and depression. 

She was 38 years old, had low selfesteem 

and couldn’t figure out why 

she felt so lost. 

The bubbly mother of two and wife of 

Grace Family Church pastor Tom, Jess 

had been blogging and speaking for 

many years, but it was only through 

her diagnosis that she was able to find 

the cover to a puzzle she says she had 

been trying to figure out for years. 

Originally from Empangeni, Jess 

moved to Durban when she was 

eight years old. She loved school and 

was a ‘jack-of-all-trades’. “I was in the 

B-team of just about every sport and 

deputy head girl. I left school ready to 

take on the world,” she smiles. 

When she started studying, though, 

Jess began to lose her way. Her 

parents were in the ministry and she 

knew for sure that wasn’t the path she 

wanted to take. But when Jess met 

and fell head-over-heels in love with 

physiotherapy student Tom in her 

third year, that all changed. 

“I remember him sitting me down and 

telling me that he wanted to become 

a pastor - and then he begged me not 

to break up with him,” she laughs. But, 

having felt so lost at university, Jess 

says she realised that this was what 

she wanted too. “I knew it would give 

meaning to my life and be a way for 

me to make a difference. It is just who 

I am.” 

Jess’s dad encouraged the couple to 

travel before settling down into a life 

of ministry, which they did for three 

years before returning to SA and 

joining the staff at Grace in 2007. 

Jess threw herself into the church, 

following her passion for sharing 

life-transforming ideas. She did this 

through hosting chats, writing blogs 

and speaking on stage. 

In 2011, after six years of marriage, 


she gave birth to their first son, William. “He came into 

this world like a firecracker. He is my wild, strong warrior 

child. Luke, who was born two years later, is sunny, warm 

and easy-going.” 

Jess suffered from post-natal depression and says 

she ‘bumbled’ her way through the first few years of 

parenting. “I started a blog called The Rookie Mom where 

I spoke openly and honestly about the behind-thescenes 

side of mothering. People really enjoyed it, I think 

because so many could relate. I have a lot of written 

content from that season of my life because of the blog.” 

When William started struggling at school and was 

diagnosed with ADHD, Jess researched and found out 

as much as she could about it. “The more I read, the 

clearer it became. I went back to my blog and it was 

right there, written all over the pages. This was me. 

The ‘time-blindness’, forgetfulness, inability to commit, 

procrastinating - I was textbook ADHD. The whole time 

I believed negative things about myself, that I was lazy, 

lacked self-discipline and even that I just wasn’t actually 

that ‘smart’! It led to depression, anxiety and very low 

self-confidence.” 

It was then, Jess says, that she realised what her book 

had to be about. “I suddenly knew what I needed to 

write about - the story of being stuck in a cage, finding 

keys along the way and walking out into freedom. Empty 

Cages is about naming your cage, picking up keys to 

unlock it, and walking out the door and into freedom.” 

Jess hired a writing coach to help her with structure and 

accountability when she set out to write her book. “I so 

enjoyed the writing process. I’m actually not even very 

attached to the outcome and success in terms of sales, 

although I would love to see it make a difference and 

help others.” 

Empty Cages: Keys to Finding Freedom is not only about 

ADHD. Jess says it’s about the universal truth of being 

able to find what is holding you back in life and getting 

the support you need to solve the problem. 

“I would never have found my freedom if I hadn’t been 

around good people who helped me lean in and bring 

what was in the darkness into the light. I’m much kinder 

to myself now. I have a better sense of humour about 

my flaws and more receive empathy from my family. 

I’m also harder on myself where I need to be. It’s been 

so liberating and the positive knock-on effect on my 

mental health has been 

amazing. 

“No matter what we are 

struggling to break free 

from, when we know 

better, we can do better. 

When you can name 

your cage, you can find 

your freedom.”

Have fun … responsibly 

While the festive season is all about happiness and celebration, there is a more serious 

side to remember. This time of year is notorious for an increase in drug and alcohol 

consumption, as well as suicide. We spoke to the founder of Ballito-based non-profit 

organisation Against Drugs and Child Abuse (ADCA). 

From holiday parties with friends to year-end functions and family gettogethers, 

the increase in social gatherings towards the end of the year 

inevitably leads to an increase in alcohol (and drug) consumption. 

ADCA founder Rex Hunt says it is vitally important to know your limit and 

stick to it. And also, to remember that you don’t have to drink or take drugs 

to be social. 

Rex, an accredited addiction coach, started ADCA in 2013 with a vision to 

provide safety without judgement to those with drug and alcohol problems. 

He also works with a number of people who were abused as children, which 

often leads to them living a life of addiction. 

ADCA is both a non-profit organisation (NPO) and a public benefit 

organisation (PBO) and is driven by Rex’s absolute passion for giving hope 

to the hopeless. “I worked in private security while my daughter was in high 

school and I saw first-hand what a massive drug and alcohol problem we 

have here on the North Coast - amongst both kids and adults.” 

He decided to start a drop-in centre where people could come and get help 

to get out of the ‘addiction cycle’. Rex eventually left the security industry to 

run ADCA full time. Now he coaches people, helping them, as he says, move 

away from a culture of addiction towards a culture of sustainable recovery. 

“It’s not just about abstinence from these substances, but abstinence along 

with radical life changes.” 

Rex offers one-on-one coaching, out-patient programmes (group meetings), 

a supporter’s group for family and friends of addicts and an open recovery 

meeting, which anyone can attend. He also works with children and is 

currently putting together two online programmes for kids, one to help 

increase their awareness about substances and substance abuse and an 

online recovery programme. His goal is to do talks at schools in the near 

future as well. 

The arrival of the festive season brings with it not only an increase in the 

use of substances, but it also means more money and more ‘dealers’ coming 

into our area, says Rex. “One problem is that a lot of these drugs that are 

being sold on the street are not ‘clean’, meaning they are mixed with all sorts 

of rubbish that can make you very ill.” And it’s not just the hard drugs that 

put people’s lives in danger. “Alcohol poisoning and dehydration can both 

be fatal. Not to mention alcohol-related accidents. Our emergency rooms 

are filled up with these cases every year and it always starts with just ‘social 

drinking’. But really, there is no such thing. You shouldn’t have to drink to be 

socially-accepted.” 

So, how can we prepare ourselves and avoid festive season binge drinking? 

“Firstly, remember that knowledge is power. Do you know what alcohol, 

weed, drugs and even vaping do to your body, especially in the long term? 

Do your kids know? Sit down and watch some YouTube videos and educate 

yourself. It’s important to know what you are putting into your body and 

the effect it has. Your body is, after all, your most treasured possession.” Rex 

says it’s important that we set healthy boundaries – for both our children 

and ourselves. “Vaping is a huge problem amongst kids on the North Coast 

and it can have very serious effects. Do some research and put boundaries 

in place.” Lastly, Rex says, try find a healthy 

alternative when you are having fun this 

festive season. Drinking alcohol triggers 

‘feel good’ chemicals in the brain, so he 

suggests turning to exercise for a natural 

release of endorphins! 

When it comes to seeking help for 

addiction, Rex says ADCA is a completely 

judgement-free zone where people come 

to find hope. “A person living in addiction 

usually feels completely hopeless and I 

want to be able to give them back hope.” 

Rex, who is fluent in Zulu, is also studying 

to be a mental health coach, as he says 

that recovery and mental health often go 

hand-in-hand. He runs his one-on-one 

coaching by appointment and his group 

meetings are as follows – outpatient 

sessions: Wednesday and Thursday 

evenings (R2500 a month for four hours 

a week), supporter’s group Tuesdays

Christmas with our cover stars 

What a year it’s been! We’ve been lucky enough to have some of the loveliest (both 

inside and out) North Coast personalities grace the cover of our magazine this year. 

We caught up with our 2021 cover stars and found out about their festive plans!

Entrepreneur, mother and co-founder of Muze 

My highlight for 2021 ... August was distribution month for The Red 

Movement (which equips, empowers and educates young girls on period 

poverty) and we had the honour and pleasure of joining a remarkable group 

of women, lead by Lee from Move Africa, for a weekend at Thanda Safari. 

Our Christmas traditions … Growing up we celebrated the German 

tradition (my forefathers were missionaries based in Muden) of exchanging 

gifts and sharing a meal on Christmas Eve. We have continued to celebrate 

this way, adding a few newer traditions as the years have passed. Christmas 

day we wake up slowly, go to church and spend the rest of the day making 

our way through leftovers! 

What I’d like to find under the Christmas tree … The past year has made 

me realize that memories and relationships are where my heart is. An escape 

and time away exploring with friends and family is what I would love! So a 

lovely little voucher under the tree, maybe? 

My hope for 2022 … Laughing, enjoying moments, open borders, time 

well spent, trips away, exploring, being present, taking time out, making 

memories, travel, celebrating with friends and family. 

Plans for New Year’s Eve … A small intimate gathering of those closest, 

walking down to the beach at midnight and seeing the New Year in, 

watching fireworks over the skyline.

My highlight for 2021 ... The success of Noa & Co has definitely been a 

highlight. I could never have imagined such a great response in our first 

year of business. Also, my youngest, Aria, turned 1 in August and we’ve had 

lots of special moments like first steps and first words. The family time we’ve 

had together over this Covid period is something I’ll always cherish. 

Our Christmas traditions … Not really. Christmas is always about family 

time, everyone in the pool, music playing and lots of food (usually a seafood 

braai with lots of salads followed by trifle) and then an afternoon nap! 

What I’d like to find under the Christmas tree … Only the kids get gifts 

in our household. JP and I don’t do presents for Christmas – we ways try to 

plan a nice annual trip, just the two of us. We’ve did this for over 10 years, 

but sadly haven’t had one the past two years. Hopefully we can plan a trip 

together for 2022! 

My hope for 2022 … I hope things can go back to normal next year once 

everyone has been vaccinated, especially our kids. I just want my daughter 

and her friends to feel free again and not live in fear. 

Plans for New Year’s Eve … Probably with friends during the day, but I can 

barely stay up to 10pm these days, so I might be asleep with my kids when 

its time to celebrate the New Year!

My highlight for 2021 ... Attending the Awaken Yoga festival in Underberg 

where I was able to share my teachings with beautiful, open-minded and 

open-hearted people. 

Our Christmas traditions … I’m the oldest of three siblings. The youngest, 

Jean, is 22 and we still wake up to Christmas stockings at the end of our beds. 

It elicits as much excitement in me as it did 20 years ago. They’re usually filled 

with suncream, nut butter, underwear and socks and a ‘healthy’ treat. 

What I’d like to find under the Christmas tree … A Faithful-To-Nature 

voucher! 

My hope for 2022 … I hope to continue expanding on a personal and 

career level. I am loving the process of working on myself and seeing how 

this reflects in my career and general life. I also hope to influence the people 

around me and those I work with to do the same so that we can continue 

welcoming in a new world. 

Plans for New Year’s Eve … I’m not really one for big parties, haha, so I 

hope to be celebrating with a small group of friends, either around a fire or 

perhaps in a cave that we’ve hiked to.

My highlight for 2021 ... That would hands down have to be the birth of my 

precious daughter Daisy. 

Our Christmas traditions … Funnily enough, because Craig and I had a long 

distance relationship for so many years, this will actually only be our second 

Christmas spent together. I look forward to starting some new traditions as a 

family this year. 

What I’d like to find under the Christmas tree … I have everything that I need. 

The past two years have been really tough on so many, but I feel like I was one 

of the lucky ones as I was fortunate enough to start a business and become a 

mom. I’m so grateful for it all. 

My hope for 2022 … My hope is for normality to finally be restored and 

everyone to find their feet after these tough times. It’s been especially 

heartbreaking to witness how hard the arts have been affected. I pray for the day 

that all theatres re-open and we are allowed to perform in front of full audiences. 

Plans for New Year’s Eve … I will be dancing in the Kickstart Christmas Panto, 

Snow White, at the Durban Playhouse. Afterwards I will join Craig to celebrate 

and see the New Year in.

on the top of the list! It was a special moment for Khanya Designs to have such an 

honour. 

Our Christmas traditions … I love books and reading and always try to share special 

books that I believe will make a difference to a family and their home. So, instead of 

expensive presents, I buy religious or spiritual books to bring wealth to a home. 

What I’d like to find under the Christmas tree … Special treasures such as respect, 

appreciation and unconditional love … these wrap me up eternally. 

My hope for 2022 … That we have individual success on a personal and business 

level. It’s been a dark year and we all need a little bit of sunshine. New hope and 

ventures for Khanya Designs as well as lots of dancing and joy in our hearts again! 

Plans for New Year’s Eve … Home with my precious family. We have had so many 

tests this year, we are just thankful for each other and our love. Our tradition is to light 

our lamp in our prayer space, welcoming the New Year with mercy, protection and 

guidance from Divinity.

My highlight for 2021 ... Undoubtedly the success of The Red 

Movement, a women’s month campaign aimed at eradicating 

period poverty in South Africa (also the reason we were featured 

on the cover of Get It!). I dreamt about this for a long time and 

seeing it all unfold was just incredible! 

Our Christmas traditions … We watch ‘The Little Rascals’ first 

thing in the morning. The movie has absolutely nothing to do with 

Christmas, it’s a little family tradition that my husband and I started 

and we hope that our kids (aged 3 and 2) grow to love it. 

What I’d like to find under the Christmas tree … Ooh, I’m hoping 

to find a designer bag. I love a good handbag! 

My hope for 2022 … Humanity has gone through so much in the 

last two years. I hope that we encounter restoration. That hope in 

our country is restored, families are restored and people’s finances 

restored! 

Plans for New Year’s Eve … We’ll be enjoying spectacular views 

from The Pencil Club in Umhlanga, our favourite place in Ethekwini!

My highlight for 2021 ... My baby, Papillon Anna Pepler, was born in 

September. It was a very traumatic birth and I almost lost my life, but the 

experience just made the gift of having another child so much bigger. 

Our Christmas traditions … Not really. We just eat a lot (like Afrikaans 

people do on Christmas). We basically cook and eat the whole day! My dad 

is a minister so he reads the Bible and prays for us before we can open our 

gifts on Christmas Eve. There are always lots of presents and decorations. 

What I’d like to find under the Christmas tree … An Airfryer and a new 

body (jokes!). 

My hope for 2022 … I hope that artists will be able to perform in front of 

big, live audiences again. My husband hasn’t been able to really work for 

two years and shows have only started to pick up recently. My hope for 

2022 is that all the waves are done now! 

Plans for New Year’s Eve … I’ll be with my kids. Bok will be doing a show 

in Pretoria and I will be in bed at by 9pm with my three small kiddies!

this year has been seeing what was once an idea unfold

Our Christmas traditions … I am Portuguese so 

there’s no way my family goes without garlic prawns 

over Christmas! Every year our family gathers from all 

ends to celebrate Christmas together. We eat at least a 

kilogram of king prawns each while sipping on wine and 

embracing festive times. 

What I’d like to find under the Christmas tree … A few 

nice good books. 

My hope for 2022 … My hope for 2022 is that everyone, 

from friends and families to small business owners, 

community leaders and employees keep the spirit of 

community and ‘ubuntu’ that was unleashed during the 

unrest earlier this year. Coming together to help one 

another in whichever way possible to make our home a 

better place. ‘Small acts, when multiplied by millions of 

people, can create transformation’. 

Plans for New Year’s Eve … For the first time in my life, I 

will be going to the chilly UK for the festive season. I am 

a sissy in cold weather, but really looking forward to the 

different experience.

World-class surfing, a jam-packed beach festival, retail, food and loads of live 

entertainment … the Ballito Pro 2021 presented by O’Neill is here.

A BARREL OF LAUGHS AT SIBAYA 

Get ready for side-splitting laughter when the Dingalings and a line-up of 

other comedians perform live at Sibaya during the month of December! Dingalings 

Henry Ramkissoon, Koobeshen Naidoo and Satchu Annamalai have used lockdown 

to come up with a zany new mixed comedy and music show guaranteed to get you 

in a festive mood with their Dingel Bells extravaganza at the iZulu Theatre, Friday 

to Sunday from 3 to 19 December. The comedians will be accompanied by the all 

new Dingalings show band comprising some of Durban’s most talented vocalists 

and musos. Every Friday to Sunday during December, equally funny stand-up 

comedians will be performing at Sibaya Theatre. Evening shows take place from 

7.30pm on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday matinees begin at 3pm. Tickets at

As always, Gateway Theatre of Shopping is turning on the dazzle this festive

a charming new original family show

We are all about celebrating our heritage 

this year and so we asked the talented 

owner of Love Laugh Flowers, Cindy 

Rynhoud, to help us put together an African 

bush-inspired Christmas table. Cindy, who is 

passionate about creating beautiful events, 

arrived at our chosen venue, the Zululami 

Luxury Coastal Estate’s beautiful new 

clubhouse, armed with giant acacia thorns, 

hints of animal print and a magnificent 

floral centrepiece. “We went for a modern, 

safari look and feel,” says Cindy. “I included 

as many natural elements as possible, such 

as wood, terracotta, various wild grasses, 

horn, acacia thorn and some foraged wild 

olive and greenery.” Cindy added bold 

splashes of black with her stunning blackframed 

Hurricane candle holders and black 

cutlery. “The terracotta trend is back with a 

vengeance, so we had to incorporate it. The 

terracotta pillar candles are from our new 

candle bar, as well as the new twisted black 

candles. These were very popular in the 70’s 

… and now they’re back!”

The highly talented and well-known chef and owner of 

Ray’s restaurant in Salt Rock, Raymond Friedman will soon 

be opening a second restaurant in the stylish new Zululami 

Coastal Estate clubhouse. We asked him to rustle up an Africaninspired 

Christmas lunch spread … and he did not disappoint! 

“The reason I went with this combination was to allow you 

to serve your guests a simple, seasonal menu that is not 

complicated to prepare and can be prepared a little in advance 

as well (so you don’t spend all Christmas day in the kitchen).” 

Ray says the menu can be dressed up if you’re wanting to ‘up 

the ante’ a little by adding some grilled peri-peri prawns with 

savoury rice. “This would be a nice way to bring the coastal 

element in a little. The salmon can also be swapped out for 

more local trout and a cold smoked salmon or trout would

• Oak and bourbon smoked Norwegian salmon with 

horseradish dressing, chargrilled asparagus and crusty bread;

• Mixed bean salad with a lime vinaigrette

Ray’s tips: 

• Make your Chimichurri fresh on the day if you can! 

• Salad ingredients can be prepared before, just don’t combine 

the ingredients or dress them too early. 

• Marinate the grilled peaches in some fresh thyme, white 

balsamic and good olive oil. 

• Make sure you slow cook the whole short rib.

Heading up her boutique brand communications consultancy, Louise Hunt is a respected 

name in PR and marketing - specifically in the property industry. She’s is a strong, bold and 

creative strategist with a spontaneous laugh, limitless energy and a head for real estate. 

Twenty years ago, Louise opened

The circle of life 

When mFulaWozi developers Barry and Sonya Theunissen contacted awardwinning 

Ballito interior designer Michele Throssell, they didn’t know it would 

lead to a serendipitous meeting of minds and families and the redesign of this 

exquisite, circle-of-life-inspired destination.

“It was as if the universe brought us 

together and I knew this project was 

meant to be.” 

As the niece of one of the world’s 

most dedicated and outstanding 

conservationists, the late Dr Ian Player, 

and daughter of internationallyacclaimed 

golfer Gary Player, 

conservation has a special place in 

interior designer Michele’s heart. 

Which is why it was incredible that 

she was contacted by the Theunissens 

when they were looking for someone 

to breathe new life into their five-star 

Mthembu Lodge. 

The safari lodge is built in a wilderness 

area that carries the footsteps of not 

only King Shaka Zulu, but also the late 

Dr Player, who launched Operation 

Rhino there, consequently saving the 

Southern White Rhino from the brink 

of extinction. 


“They didn’t realise who I was and had 

no idea about my connection to this 

part of the world through my uncle 

when we first spoke,” says Michele. 

A true labour of love, mFulaWozi is 

the result of an incredible ‘meeting of 

minds’ between the developers and 

multiple Zulu chiefs who agreed to 

unlock 16 000 hectares of bushveld, 

expanding the footprint of the 

existing Hluhluwe/iMfolozi park. 

Both Mthembu Lodge and the other 

lodge on the reserve, Biyela Lodge, 

were entirely built by members of the 

surrounding communities. 

Nestled on the banks of the White 

iMfolozi River, Mthembu Lodge is built 

in a symbolic, circular configuration. 

Everything, from the furniture to the wall hangings and even 

floor mats, was inspired by the circular design of the lodge. 

The rooms are magnificent and every detail 

has been given careful thought. 

“When I walked around the lodge, 

I could feel my uncle’s spirit there. 

There was no question about me 

being involved in this project,” she 

says, her voice breaking slightly with 

emotion. “The concept came to me so 

quickly and we managed to complete 

it in just three and a half months. It 

usually takes six months for a project 

like this.” 

Michele knew from the beginning 

that she wanted to celebrate the 

circular architecture of the lodge. 

The circle is often used in design to 

represent unity, commitment, love 

or community. “It was fitting that the 

architecture of this lodge – built by a 

couple so connected and committed 

to the good of the community 

and environment – was so strongly 

informed by this shape.” 

Michele abandoned the more 

traditional rectilinear furniture and 

spatial planning in favour of soft 

curves and configurations more 

circular in nature. Everything, from 

the round tables and semi-circle 

headboards, to circular grass mats 

and baskets adorning the walls, 

was inspired by this beautiful 

shape. Drawing inspiration from 

the landscape, Michele looked at 

the wheaty, rusty colours of the 

surrounding grasses and the dark 

charcoal and grey blue of the river 

water. “The circle tends to be viewed 

as feminine, which is why our colour 

palette, also inspired by the natural stone 

and sand surrounding the lodge, is a 

delicate yet rich blend of bone, sand, 

terracotta, dirty pink and chocolate.

of the community and 

environment – was so 

strongly informed by 

this shape. 

The lodge has seven luxury one-bedroom suites and two family 

suites, all with incredible views of the surrounding wilderness 

These colours are also very ‘happening’ in 

the design world at the moment.” 

Staying true to the ethos and vision of 

the owners, Michele sourced as much 

of the décor and furniture as locally as 

possible. They visited the Zamimpilo 

community market in Zululand to source 

handmade Zulu ceramics, grass mats and 

baskets and chose locally-manufactured 

fabric and furniture pieces. 

Michele and her team specialise in 

the design of lodges and high-end 

residential projects and their services 

also include helping on the operational 

side, often closing the gap between 

the design of a beautiful, five-star lodge 

and the execution in terms of guest 

experience. They can assist with training 

staff, stocking the kitchen with cutlery 

and crockery and even fine-tuning the 

gardens. 

This project, however, has much more 

of an emotional connection for Michele 

than most. 

“Circles have no beginning and no end. 

They represent life and the life cycle – the 

delicate balance in nature, timelessness, 

connectivity and eternity. It felt so 

poignant that the owners approached 

me to help them breathe new life into 

their lodge when this specific area of 

land was so important to my dear, late 

uncle. It was ‘kismet’ … meant to be.”

Although the City Centre will be popular with those 

who’ve taken permanent advantage of the 

work-from-home option Covid’s given us, moved

sophistication, while Amanda Elliott of Design Collective - 

whose three-bedroom duplex apartment stands out for its 

customised wallpaper designs - also played with contrasts, 

juxtaposing Manhattan-style apartment living with Steyn City’s 

parkland setting. 

The Private House Company’s Yvonne O’Brien’s design philosophy 

- emphasising understated elegance - is clearly evidenced in her 

four-bedroom, duplex apartment which, again, is imbued with an 

accent on the luxurious. 

Buzwe Mabuza of Design Dreams International took inspiration 

for his two-bedroom simplex apartment from the global citizen 

who feels as much at home at Steyn City as they do in New York 

or London, and Donald Nxumalo’s (Donald Nxumalo Interior 

Design) designer of a two-bedroom duplex apartment, feels the 

ideal homeowner is someone who values quality – not just the 

quality of their possessions, but quality of life. 

Finally, Cocoon Lifestyle’s Bilala Mabuza added an unforgettable 

touch to her gorgeous three-bedroom apartment with the 

inclusion of pieces by some of South Africa’s most exciting 

up-and-coming-artists.

Buy or rent? 


Is it better to rent or buy in the current market? We asked 

property Umhlanga property specialists Seeff Umhlanga 

to give us some insight into the rental market in this 

booming part of our country. 

It is true that lockdown changed most people’s lives. Working from home 

means we no longer have to ‘dress up and show up’. While industries the world 

over have experienced drastic turbulence, the old property mantra of ‘location, 

location, location’ has never been more rewarding. The reason for this is simple: 

with employees no longer having to clock into an office and spend considerable 

time in traffic, people are taking advantage of living where they feel best suits 

their lifestyle. So people no longer have to wait until retirement to ‘move to the 

coast’. 

Which brings us to the question of rental accommodation in Umhlanga. While 

booming all year round, the Umhlanga market has experienced a massive 

change when it comes to who is renting, who is buying ... and why. 

“Big companies such as Toyota and Unilever haven’t imported any new 

employees with huge budgets and, in the beginning of 2021, landlords started 

to panic,” says Seeff Umhlanga candidate intern rental agent Alwene Els. 

“However, unlike other parts of the country, the rental properties in the greater 

Umhlanga area are hardly empty and turnaround time is fast.” So, who, you may 

ask, is renting these top-end properties for R50 000 a month? And for that rental 

price, is it not better to buy your own property? Not necessarily. 

“The mind-set for most of our Joburg clientele is - why endure heavy traffic hours 

when I can wake up to a view overlooking the ocean? With affordable flights and 

Zoom meetings, you are only a 50-minute flight away from your HQ. For those 

making the change, renting is a good way to scope out a community and you 

get double the amount of brick for your buck. On the economics side, if you 

are renting a R6 million property in an estate, the rental calculation will be an 

average of 60/70% of your bond (presuming you have a bond). By renting a R4 

million home, your monthly rental is an average of R30 000 a month. From an 

investor’s point of view, if you consider investing in a property under R3 million, 

your returns are sitting at almost 80% and sometimes one hundred percent, if it’s 

furnished.” 

Another question on homeowner’s minds, says Alwene, is ‘can I make good 

returns with Airbnb?’ “Initially it sounds very attractive with huge profits and the 

internet making it super easy and simple but there are a few factors to consider. 

Firstly, does your complex or estate 

allow short lets? Body corporates and 

neighbours often become frustrated 

with too many people in and out of a 

unit. Security tags and access codes 

changing hands on a regular basis 

pose a serious security risk by being 

abused or loss. Often, short let guests 

have a blatant disregard for the rules 

and the fact that you don’t know who 

is staying in your property can be a 

push back. Additionally, the price of 

managing late check in’s, breakages, 

deep cleaning and laundry every 

second or third day may cost you 

more than it’s worth.” 

Long-term rental, if done through a 

professional and reputable company, 

might be your best bet. “The rental 

market has boomed with property 

owners selling their homes and 

apartments and renting in case they 

want to emigrate or have bad debt 

during the past 12 months and can’t 

qualify for a bond. There are rental 

security measures that a landlord can 

put in place to secure the rent such as 

‘rent guarantee’, which is almost like a 

policy that the tenant pays instead of 

a deposit. You only qualify if you have 

had a credit check, so this benefits 

both parties.” 

The bottom line, says Alwene, is to 

simply seize the moment! “With a low 

7.25% interest rate you can buy, rent 

or renovate your ideal home. After all, 

home is where the heart is and YOLO

Hluhluwe River Lodge 

The gin has been poured, the sun is starting to set and the unmistakable 

sound of the African Fish Eagle echoes overhead as it soars above Lake St Lucia.

Separate from the main lodge, the 

accommodation at the lodge comprises

thatched, wooden chalets perched

or families, there are different chalets 

to suit your needs. The two openplan 

family chalets on the property 

are perfect for parents sharing with 

younger kids. They have a double bed 

for the parents and two single beds set 

off to one side with a drawable curtain 

to separate the kids room from the rest, 

if needed. The spacious chalets have ensuite 

bathrooms with roomy showers 

as well as a sizeable luggage rack and 

storage area. There is aircon and mozzie 

nets for the summer months and each 

chalet has a lovely deck with chairs, 

perfect for enjoying that morning 

coffee while the inquisitive nyala come 

to say hi. 

The eight, standard chalets sleep two 

adults and are set slightly away from 

the family units. They have queensized 

beds and are situated under 

the beautiful, cool forest canopy. 

Honeymooners will love the luxuriously 

appointed Honeymoon Suites, which 

are tucked away from the rest of the 

lodge and feature a large deck with 

slide away doors and wonderful forest 

views. Each has a king-sized bed and 

Victorian bath on one side of the room. 

REPLENISH YOUR MIND, 

BODY AND SOUL 

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in 

the inside dining room area or outside 

on the terrace. The food at Hluhluwe 

River Lodge is tasty and generous. They 

serve a delicious cold buffet breakfast 

with plated hot breakfast to follow, light 

lunches such as burgers, wraps and 

salads and elegant, wholesome dinners. 

Kids can eat with parents or order off 

a separate menu if they choose to eat 

slightly earlier in the evening. The beers 

are always cold at the popular Poachers 

Paddle Bar, situated just off the terrace 

and the pub is well-stocked and the 

ideal spot to enjoy a sundowner or 

catch that just-can’t-miss-it sports 

match! 

EXPLORE, ADVENTURE OR MEANDER 

The quaint swimming pool area is situated away from the main lodge and 

chalets for privacy and is tucked away in a shaded part of the forested garden. 

The sights and sounds of nature surround you and it’s hard not to nod off as 

you stretch out on one of the sun loungers under the umbrellas. Hluhluwe 

River Lodge is wonderful for the more energetic visitor as well. Positioned 

within a magnificent sand forest, the lodge is home to some of the most 

remarkable tree species and walks (of between 2km and 6km) can be enjoyed 

at leisure within the 80ha conservancy. There are loads of nyala and little red 

duiker to be spotted and the 2km trail takes around an hour to complete. 

The lodge is also a fantastic spot for those mountain bikers who just can’t 

leave their bikes at home! The trails literally start just outside your chalet and 

there is a great 20km ride to False Bay Park, a 2300ha reserve on the shoreline 

of Lake St Lucia, which is flat and easy to ride for novices and includes some 

single track for the more advanced riders. There are also longer trails for the 

more seasoned riders (note: you must bring your own bikes as the lodge 

does not have bikes to rent). 

Whether you’re looking for a quiet bush escape, a mountain biking adventure 

or are hoping to enjoy a safari at the game reserve (just 20-minutes away), 

Hluhluwe River Lodge is a wonderful breakaway in the bush, not-too-far from 

home. They are also currently running a great special – R1400 per person per
