After a solid season that saw
the Pioneers go 8-5, Lynnfield
golfers Aidan Burke and Deven
Henehan have earned Item All-
Star honorable mention honors
for the 2021 season.
Following one of the best
individual golf seasons in recent
memory, St. Mary’s senior
and Swampscott native Aidan
Emmerich has been named the
2021 Item Player of the Year for
golf.
It was an outstanding year
for Emmerich, who was named
Catholic Central League MVP for
the third straight season this fall.
Emmerich wrapped up a stellar
St. Mary’s career that saw him
become a seven-year varsity
starter, a member of three state
championship teams, a three-time
CCL MVP, a three-time CCL
champion and a Division 2 North
champion.
Also getting named as Item
All-Stars for the 2021 golf season
were Lynn Classical junior Brady
Warren, Marblehead senior Matt
Weed, Swampscott senior Lou
Spellios, St. John’s Prep senior
Alex Landry and Bishop Fenwick
senior Tony Novak.
Novak took home CCL All-
Star honors after leading the
Crusaders from the No. 1 spot
this season, averaging nearly 30
points per match.

Item All-Star honorable
mention honors for golf
Warren, who was named co-
Player of the Year in the Greater
Boston League, went unbeaten
in individual play this season,
leading Classical to its second
straight GBL title.
Weed secured medalist honors
in every dual match that he played
in this season as the No. 1 golfer
for the Magicians, which was
good enough to earn him a spot
on the All-Conference Team in
the Northeastern Conference.
Spellios was in the No. 1 spot
for the Big Blue this year, helping
lead his team to an 8-5 record and
a berth in the Division 3 North
Tournament. A member of the
NEC All-Conference Team this
year, his top performance came in
the regular season finale, when he
shot a 1-under 35 to help lead the
Big Blue past Peabody.
Landry was a key cog in the
machine that helped lift the
Eagles to their first Division 1
state championship in six years.
A Catholic Conference All-Star
selection, Landry fired a score of
3-over 74 to finish tied for fifth
at the Division 1 individual state
championship at Wentworth Hills
Country Club.
Area golfers who earned all-star
honorable mention status for the
2021 season were Sean Mathers
and Shea Newhall (St. Mary’s);
Connor Cunningham and Leo
Schroeder (Bishop Fenwick).

Item All-Star Team for volleyball

Following one of the best individual
seasons in the state,
Lynnfield junior Ella Gizmunt
has been named to the 2021 Item
All-Star Team for volleyball.
Gizmunt was one of the top
players in the fiercely competitive
Cape Ann League this year,
helping to lead the Pioneers to
a 16-4 season and a trip to the
Division 4 semifinal. Named
CAL Player of the Year, Gizmunt
led all Massachusetts players
with an incredible 426 kills
with a .421 hitting percentage.
She also added 248 digs and
80 aces during the year, which
helped her earn Massachusetts
Volleyball Coaches Association
All-State honors.
After helping to lead Lynn
Classical to one of its best regular
seasons in recent memory,
Rams senior Chloe Clement
has been named the 2021 Item
Player of the Year for volleyball.
Clement, who was a commanding
presence for the Rams
all season long, was named
Greater Boston League MVP for
the 2021 season. She finished
the year with 277 kills, 184 digs
and 83 aces in 22 games played.
Those stats were good enough
to get Clement chosen for the
Massachusetts Division 1 All-
State Team ― making her the
first Classical player and first
GBL player to ever earn such an
honor. She was also named the
MaxPreps Massachusetts Player
of the Week for Nov. 1-7 following
her stellar performance
in the Division 1 Round of 32.
Also named as Item All-Stars
for the 2021 volleyball season
were Lynn Classical senior
Samantha Thoeun, Marblehead
junior Keira Sweetnam, Peabody
junior Isabel Bettencourt and
Peabody sophomore Abby
Bettencourt.
Thoeun led the Rams in assists
this season with 256, while
also leading the way in aces with
86. She also finished the year
with 146 digs, 97 kills and 75
service points.
Sweetnam — who notched
more than 150 total kills in
the Magicians’ 18 games —
was named the Northeastern
Conference MVP after helping
to lead Marblehead to a 14-4
regular season.
Isabel Bettencourt contributed
all over the court for the Tanners,
notching 164 service points,
55 aces, 228 digs, 213 kills as
Peabody went 15-4 during the
regular season and made a run to
the Division 1 Round of 16.
Abby Bettencourt established
herself as one of the best setters
in the area during her sophomore
year, putting up an eye-popping
452 assists in 21 games played.
She also had a solid year across
other parts of the game, finishing
with 108 service points,
155 digs and 84 kills.
Other local volleyball players
who earned all-star honorable
mention status for the
2021 season were Annabelle

Stephen Srey (Lynn English);
