DECEMBER 9, 2021 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 13 Helen Gangi is Lynnfield Art Guild’s featured artist For The Weekly NeWs The Lynnfield Art Guild (LAG) is proud to announce that local artist and member Helen Gangi is the featured artist beginning on Nov. 15 On the LAG website www.lynnfieldarts.org. You can see 20 of her paintings under ‘members’ art’ at our website for the next six weeks. See also www.lynnfieldarts.org/helen-gangi. Gangi was born and raised in Somerville. After graduating from college with a degree in education, she taught elementary school in Somerville for seven years. During this time she met her husband, Joseph, and they settled in Lynn. She began a long career teaching in the Swampscott school system followed by her retirement COURTESY PHOTO | HELEN GANGI Artist Helen Gangi painted with oils for over 35 years but switched to watercolors in recent years. from 29 fulfilling and dedicated years in education. Gangi has been painting for over 35 years; most of those years, her preferred medium was oil painting. In recent years, she decided to challenge herself by attempting to paint in watercolors. Gangi had found this difficult at times, due to the uniqueness between both applications, but through her perseverance to succeed, she found the change rewarding. With instruction and encouragement of local watercolorist and teacher, Bill Deveney, she has embraced the learning curve and continues to improve her painting skills. We are fortunate to present a small sampling of Gangi’s paintings to showcase her high level of talent and interpretation in creating beautiful, color-laden artworks. Through the years, Gangi has exhibited and sold many paintings and gifted a good number to family members and friends. From a talented lady with many years of experience, who just celebrated her 98th birthday, come these words of wisdom: “I thoroughly believe that every person, according to one’s capabilities, should become and remain active, both physically and mentally throughout an entire lifetime. Age should not be a barrier. Learn something new anytime. You never know when it might become useful.” In her spare time, Gangi knits prayer shawls for hospice and makes dresses for needy children in Africa. She has donated over 150 dresses. Each day Gangi does at least 40 minutes of chair yoga and Tai Chi. The Guild is proud to showcase Gangi’s work and invites the public to check out its website www.lynnfieldarts. org.
