We can thank RCA for starting the practice of using high quality, lowcon<br />
negatives for all transfers. DiscoVision was the first to use a Rank Cintel<br />
Mark III flying-spot scanner, but it was RCA who insisted on negatives<br />
instead of prints for the best video quality. I remember how stunning the<br />
Star Wars <strong>CED</strong> transfer was. It looked better than the LD since RCA routinely<br />
redid transfers for VideoDisc release. (I have a single-sided, floppy, test<br />
LaserDisc pressing by MCA DiscoVision from 1975, of High Planes Drifter, and<br />
it was transfered using a conventional film chain. While the disc plays fine<br />
on todays players, the transfer shows just how big an advance the Rank truly<br />
was)<br />
One last thing...in regards to pricing...I love <strong>CED</strong> and all, but it bugs me<br />
when people say <strong>CED</strong> VideoDiscs were the first low cost titles on home video.<br />
Not true. MCA DiscoVision's original list prices (1978-79) were $5.95, $9.95<br />
and $15.95 per title (for boxed, multi-disc sets!)...can't get much cheaper<br />
than that!<br />
