A handful of really enjoyable reads to look out for
The new standout vintages just
released by Tokara are worth
shouting about ... with the Cabernet
Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc as
major focus varieties. Since we’re
still in the mood for white, this
month’s book club choice is the
Tokara Reserve Collection Elgin
Sauvignon Blanc 2021 ... all
Michelle Cameron has a new name,
girl who lured a little white girl away
from her parents and to her death.
She’s done her time, but as she starts
her new life, she’s questioned by
police for a new crime, and the press
get hold of the story, and set about
destroying her once again. Jacqueline
Roy’s novel is a heartbreaking,
emotional read. Simon & Schuster
Violeta Del Valle comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920 ... her life marked
by extraordinary events. The ripples of the Great War are still being felt and the
Spanish flu arrives on South American shores. Told in the form of a letter to
Camilo, who she loves ‘more than anyone in this world’, Isabel Allende’s
Violeta is the emotional story of a 100 year life, the passions and heartbreak,
wealth and poverty, loss and joy, as well as a life shaped by the fight for women’s
rights. Bloomsbury Publishing • Jill Mansell writes lovely, feel-good reads ... and her
latest, Should I Tell You, doesn’t disappoint. Family, love, rejection ... all set
against a backdrop of sparkling seas. Headline Review
From a pregnant schoolgirl in 1969
to a young woman who finds out a
shocking truth about her family 35
years later, Freya North’s Little Wing
is a moving novel about family and
identity, resilience and forgiveness,
and how no-one is ever forgotten.
Welbeck Publishing
Love a thriller with a twist in the tale. And in Sarah
Bonner’s Her Perfect Twin, the twist hits you half
way through the book ... so unexpected and fast it
could give you whiplash. Leah has everything she’s
ever wanted ... fame, fortune, and freedom to do
what she wants. But she’s always wanted everything
her identical twin sister Megan has, too.
And when Megan snoops on her husband’s phone
and finds revealing, provocative photographs of her
estranged sister, it appears Leigh’s after her husband.
What follows is murder, a cover-up, secrets, abusive
relationships and a new romance, and a setback due
to a Covid lockdown. And then there’s another wowza
twist. This is Sarah’s first novel ... we can’t wait for the
next one. Brilliant! Hodder & Stoughton. This, and all
the Book Club reads, available at exclusivebooks.co.za
Just start
‘There is nothing as heavy as
a dark thought, and on longdistance
runs, they are as energydepleting
and ultimately as
fatal as shoes that are one size
to small’. It was 2009, and Erica
Terblanche was about to run
250km over seven days across
the Sahara Desert, and she was
determined to displace negative
thinking with bright thoughts.
The five statements, (with factual
proof-points) were ... ‘I have the
potential do to this; I am in a
good place right now; I have so
much love in my life, and love
gives me wings; I love what I
am about to do; I can write a
thousand poems in the desert’.
And she followed that with ‘And
something wonderful can happen’.
Years, and much education in
positive psychology, later, she came
to understand why her simple list
was so powerful. ‘It was created on
the building blocks of the things that
make our lives worthwhile: Love and
connection, meaning and purpose, the
holding of worthwhile goals, a sense
of agency and self-belief and being
engaged in doing something one loves
for its own sake’.
In Run - For The Love Of LIfe, Erica
tells about how the hardest things
in her life, ‘bad things’, were the ones
that are important in her achieving
success. Part adventure, part travel, part
autobiographical novel, this brilliantly
written memoir stretches from North
Africa to Greece, from Turkey to the
Grand Canyon in Utah, from the desert
to the boardroom, from her growing
up in on a Free State farm to Cape
Town, where she lives now, and where
you’ll find her at Run Club early in the
morning on the Sea Point promenade,
or perhaps at the top of Table Mountain
with a group of kids who’re in the
process of learning the creative power
of goalsetting.
Run is inspirational and heart-breaking,
raw and real, uplifting and encouraging.
Even if you’ve never run, it’s an
extraordinary read. Hell ... it even has a
happy ending! And bonus ... at the back
of the book you’ll find a QR code for The
Ten Commandments of Running and the
Thrive Couch to 10km in 10 weeks training
programme. As she says ... ‘Just start’.
Off-air
with Liesl
Model. Radio and
television presenter.
Motivational speaker.
Former Miss SA. Liesl
Laurie-Mthombeni rocks.
She is refreshingly
down-to-earth, can
lip-sync like a pro, is
passionate to fight
gender-based violence
and loves long chats
with her pup.
Liesl Lauire-Mthombeni may have handed over her Miss SA crown, but she’s
certainly not resting on her laurels. Instead, she’s been making great strides in her
career. From becoming a brand ambassador for various beauty brands to shake,
rattle and rolling in Dancing with the Stars SA, to playing a cameo role in Legacy
SA. And, of course, landing not one, but two gigs on Jacaranda FM. On weekdays
you’ll catch her bright and early on the Breakfast with Martin Bester show and
Saturdays she hosts the CTM Top 20. Last year she also tied the knot with TV
presenter and medical doctor Musa Mthombeni. Glowing and with stars in her
eyes, she claims that she is now living her best life.
Liesl shares some interesting tidbits about herself you may not have known.
She is quite the homebody
I do love to be in PJ’s, messy hair, reading
a book, watching a great series or
jumping in the pool, catching a tan, and
building puzzles. And braai! a huge fave
for me and Musa. I would say I’m a 70
per cent homebody and 30 per cent
going out. And that would be for date
nights, spending time with the fam or
going out for dinner with friends.
Liesl wouldn’t mind being a
media correspondent for E!
Entertainment.
Imagine! Not only would you get to
meet the most incredible celebs but
also the most influential people. To be
able to interview a mover and shaker
like Oprah Winfrey. Or sit down with
the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai. That
would be a dream come true.
She and Musa recently became dog
parents to a hyperactive American
bulldog, Cashew.
Ahhh, our new bestie. Even though he
looks like a meanie, he is the sweetest,
softest baba. He listens so well, and
his favourite toy is a big basketball. He
does make a run for it when the broom
appears though. Weird. Although only
four months old, he taught me that
I need to have more patience, and
playtime is a fun time. Before getting a
dog, I would get home, play on my Insta
page, watch a series, and not spend
as much time outside as I needed to.
And with him, I realised I need some
more nature in my life and playing
outside with him is such fun ... and
good exercise. We have long chats,
mostly about snacks and in typical baby
language. Not necessarily understood
by anyone but us.
08 Get It Magazine March 22

When she turned 30, she waved her long locks goodbye.
I wanted to mark this milestone as a new and exciting chapter in my life. So, I
chopped all my hair off, and now have a short pixie do. No, I do not miss my long
hair at all. I kinda feel the short hair has brought about a new kind of Liesl - in
all the good ways possible. I don’t know if it is a confidence thing or just a new
whiff of oomph and excitement.
She’s all about sprinkling joy
and kindness.
It’s for free! We always say on the
Breakfast Show that you can be crazy
as long as you are kind. The world is
already so full of people set out to be
nasty and spread ugliness. I set out to
share a smile, peace, share a hug …
ok, Covid, we can’t. But, share a laugh.
Just spread joy!
She lip-syncs into a spoon,
hairbrush, or anything that can work
as a ‘mic’.
I kid you not. My go-to, fun Liesl
moment at any get-together, sleepover
and girls’ night out is lip-syncing. I know
the words of most songs, especially the
popular hits, thanks to the chart show
I present every week. But singing out
loud? Nah, not so much. Surprisingly,
I can and like to sing, but please don’t
ask me to do it out loud, let alone on
a stage. Just the thought of it makes
me want to run away. Maybe one day?
Who knows! Hahaha.
Part of her ‘let’s do better in 2022
vibes’ includes reading more and
she recommends these five books.
I’m about to start with Becoming by
Michelle Obama. Cannot wait. Four
other must-reads are Every Breath
by Nicholas Sparks, Dolly Alderton’s
Ghosts, Jojo Moyes’ One Plus One and
Paul Arden’s It’s Not How Good You Are,
It’s How Good You Want to Be.
At this moment Cashew is keeping
her fit.
I go through waves. At the moment
I’m not training like a beast but
keeping fit by playing outside with
Cashew, taking him for walks or
swimming with him in the pool.
Sometimes I do some good ol’
skipping with a rope or a go to flow
classes - which is like yoga but not
necessarily the same. When I’m in
fitness mode and mentally ready
to try, I do HIIT training, either in a
class or with a trainer because I like
accountability.
She is not afraid to take a stand against gender-based violence.
Musa and I were part of a big campaign last year called #NoExcuse. This
was not only an effort to fight gender-based violence but to challenge the
Department of Home Affairs to amend the wedding vows currently used in
their office and by marriage officers to include an acknowledgment from the
groom to love, protect and never abuse his bride. I feel it is important to speak
candidly about this type of ‘pandemic’. I feel that government needs to step
up and do better when it comes to the rights of women and when it comes
to perpetrators being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Should a
person have the courage to come forward to speak up against someone who
has done something to them, it should be taken seriously. And they should
have the reassurance that something will be done. That the law will follow
through. Right now, we as women don’t feel safe, not even to report such
incidents, simply because there is no follow-through. On the rare occasion
where it does happen, it is so poorly executed. It is heart-breaking to hear
the stats of how men go free and how cases are mishandled. A man recently
asked me why I don’t ever take a run in the nature reserve right next to our
house. I replied, “because I don’t want to be raped and killed.” That response
came about without me even thinking because that’s the reality we as women
live in. Really … we deserve so much better than living in constant fear. This
is something I will tie my voice to forever or until government and the police
starts listening to the women of South Africa.
Liesl’s first drink in the morning
(to wake-up the metabolism):
You’ll need: ¼ tsp Turmeric; ½ tsp
Cayenne Pepper; 20ml Apple Cider
Vinegar; 300ml water; dash of
lemon juice
How to: Add all the ingredients to the
water and give it a good stir. Drink up!
Green detox smoothie:
You’ll need: 2 handfuls spinach; ¼ cup
frozen pineapple; 1 banana; 1 Tbsp
Spirulina Powder; 1 tsp Turmeric
Powder; 1 tsp Maca Powder
How to: Blend all the ingredients
together and serve.
Liesl’s ultimate workout playlist:
1. Flo Rida & Sia - Wild Ones
2. Martin Bester - Vir Die Liefde
3. Dj Zinhle - Umlilo
4. Dua Lipa - Physical
5. Timbaland ft. Katy Perry - If We
STAYING SANE
Life is crazy. But if you can run the New York marathon, raise identical twins as a single
mum, and write best-selling business books, you must be doing something right.
Hello Helen Nicholson ... who tells us how to stay sane in insane times.
Text: KYM ARGO
10 Get It Magazine March 22

Helen Nicholson has done a couple of insane things in her life. ‘Leaving
Dubai with my two-year-old twins, Caitlyn and Sabrina, and returning
to SA on my own’ was, she says, the most insane decision she made.
She’d been living in the Middle East for five years where she developed
and sold her own successful business. ‘Everyone told me I was mad to
return to SA as a single mum. But I knew in my heart of hearts it was
the right thing to do, and it’s singularly the best decision I ever made in
my life. I wasn’t cut out to be an expat wife!’
And one of the most sane? That must surely be living with her
husband, Michael, in a double story house ... she lives downstairs, he
lives upstairs. Long story short ... they had both been married before,
were together for around eight years and wanted to commit, but in a
neutral space. They have different tastes in music, furniture, books; she’s
in a deep sleep by 9pm while he’s more restless. So there are spaces
where they are together ... they meditate on the upstairs deck in the
morning and have drinks there after work, and others completely apart,
like Helen’s dressing room, since she prefers getting ready alone.
They always eat and entertain together, take turns to cook, and
have tea in bed in the morning after they’ve let out the dogs – two
dachshunds Ollie and Dixie and Ellie, the golden retriever. But when
Michael wants to listen to talk shows on the radio – which he does all
day long! – he does in his domain, upstairs.
Meanwhile Helen is running her leadership development business –
The Networking Company. Known by her clients as The Networking
Queen, she began her career as an accountant and has evolved into
the founder and CEO – Chief Excitement Officer – of the consultancy,
which has trained more than 12 000 people worldwide on the socalled
soft skills. Skills like the productivity and mindset-enhancing
benefits of mindfulness ... essential skills that take people’s careers to
the next level.
Between all that, she’s run the New York marathon, seen her one
daughter, Sabrina, head off to live and work in London, and welcomed
twin Caitlyn into the company, where she works alongside mum.
Waiting to be saved?
No one is coming.
You’re the one you have been waiting for!
Helen’s also published two best-selling business books, with a third
released this month. After the loss, uncertainty and turbulence of the
past two years, the book Mindfulness: How to Stay Sane in an Insane
World is about making mindfulness easy and accessible to all. Using
her own business and personal lessons to provide a valuable, practical
approach on not just how to cope, but how to thrive in today’s world,
Helen unpacks how to incorporate intentional strategic recovery into
your day. It provides uncomplicated insight into the neuroscience
behind mindfulness, movement and sleep. She also explains how to
‘sleep’ your way to the top, how to practically ‘do’ mindfulness amidst a
busy life and how to deal with your change dragons (issues you need
Helen shares some stay-sane tips ...
So. How do you stay sane in an insane world? Here
are Helen’s top 10 tips.
1. Have a recovery full stop at the end of each day
e.g. Pack your laptop away out of sight at 5pm.
2. Start your morning mindfully with your hot
drink, and don’t switch your phone on until you’ve
finished your coffee/tea.
3. If you’re working from home, go outside at least
twice during the day to get some sun on your face,
and eat lunch outside.
4. Write down five things you’re grateful for before
you go to bed, even if it’s ‘I’m grateful this day
is over’.
5. Before you switch on your phone in the morning
after your coffee, do 4:7:8 breathing for five mins.
Breathe in through your nose to the count of four,
hold your breath to the count of seven and then
exhale through your mouth for the count of eight.
Do this at least 10 times.
6. Stop multi-tasking. Do one thing well at a time. It
makes you happier and more productive.
7. Have a digital detox once a week over the
weekend. Switch off your phone and place it in a
drawer. Start off with an hour and build up.
8. Limit social media consumption and never
comment on a post when you’re feeling annoyed
or irritated.
9. When you have a meal at a table with your family
or friends, make sure your phone is out of sight.
Research shows that even seeing your phone on a
table is a major distraction.
10. Sleep your way to the top! Take two slowrelease
magnesium tablets before you go to bed
and have an Epsom salts bath. It helps relax your
body so you sleep better.
... and essential skills
Ten skills to be more mindful. You need to ...
1. Get seven to eight hours of sleep a night.
2. Access news at a high level. Don’t let negativity
consume you.
3. Diarise activities that give you joy e.g. hiking, art
or dancing.
4. Use airplane mode on your phone regularly ... be
the Master, not the Slave to technology.
5. Do deep-focused work for at least 90 mins
every day, where you switch off your phone and
email notifications.
6. Schedule breaks throughout the year at the
beginning of the year, or preferably the year before.
7. Pay for as many of those breaks the year before,
so you commit to them.
8. Find recovery places to go out of town where
there is no signal.
9. Limit social media to an hour a day.
10. Realise that ‘no one is coming‘ to save you. You
are the one you’ve been waiting for.
Take the #30dayrewild challenge for healthy skin
Here’s a challenge well worth taking up. Esse’s #30dayrewild challenge is all
about cutting out harmful chemicals and getting your best skin back in 30 days.
What’s it all about? Humans have been upsetting the balance in nature for too
long ... the pollution of the environment has had devastating consequences
for ecosystems around the world, and in much the same way, cheap synthetic
chemicals in modern skincare regimes upset the balance of the skin’s natural
microbiome. So rather than healing the skin, the increased use of chemicalbased
product has polluted its ecosystem, leading to a rise in sensitivity and
inflammatory skin conditions.
On top of that, we’re living in an age where dirt has been demonised by an
industry that promotes sterile as healthy. But all those deep-cleansing routines
strip the skin of natural oils. It’s time to end the war on germs. Half of the cells in
your body are ‘germs’ and you need them for optimal health.
The challenge is all about returning skin to its
roots. And to make it easy, there’s an
Esse Sensitive Skin #30dayrewild
Pack, which includes an
ultra-gentle range of
products designed to
strengthen barrier
function and support
healthy skin
microbiome.
There are preand
probiotics,
it is pH
balanced
but there
are no harsh
preservatives
or synthetic
chemical
ingredients. With a
Sensitive Cleanser,
Sensitive Toner,
Nourish Moisturiser,
Protect Oil, and Resurrect
Serum (and these last two
are game-changers ... the oil
forms a protective layer on
skin, reducing the damage done by
external aggressors such as UV rays and free radicals, and the serum hydrates
and plumps the skin, addressing signs of ageing without initiating an
immune response.)
This is more than just a focus on skin health, it represents a lifestyle change that
values the importance of healthy, natural ecosystems, so for the best results, Esse
encourages you to consider a few simple changes which offer long-term benefits
... eat whole, organic foods; get regular exercise and get out into nature wherever
possible. It can even be as simple as buying an indoor plant!
This limited edition package (promo ends April) costs R930 (half the price of the
products bought separately), and you’ll find it at all Esse Stockists. Follow Esse
Today’s the day. No more excuses!
Stick to your intentions
Whether you’ve decided that 2022 is the year you
hit your health and fitness goals once and for all
or if you want to continue your progress from last
year, here are some tips from the Herbalife
Nutrition team .... tips to help you stick to
your intentions.
Move to something you love The great thing
about exercise is the variety. If running around the
block or lifting weights at a gym aren’t your thing,
try dance classes, Zumba, or yoga. The trick is to
find something you love to keep you mentally
motivated while you move that body. You can
also give your exercise of choice an extra kick by
adding some uplifting background music to it.
This will help you match your movements to the
beats and keep you pushing forward. Create a
workout playlist of all your favourites.
Give group activities a go There’s an African
proverb that says ‘if you want to go fast, go alone;
but if you want to go far, go together’. Exercising
in a group is the perfect way to get active if you
tend to throw in the towel early on. Not only will
a group setting motivate you to keep going and
keep up with your peers, but it can be a lot more
fun. Start small by asking a friend to join you for a
weekly walk or jog. For the more adventurous, you
can sign up for group exercise classes, join a hiking
group, try Parkruns, or volunteer for a sports team
at your local community sports centre.
Say yes to dinner parties Say what? Attending
a dinner party can be quite terrifying ... delicious,
tempting dishes every which way you look.
But instead of isolating yourself to maintain
your goals, compromise. Your friends will most
likely understand your requests and try to
accommodate you. In fact, it may be just the thing
they need to kick-start their own desire to make
healthy changes. And if you’re lucky enough to
have a group of friends who share your passion
for nutrition, set up a dinner club. Each person can
host a dinner party and cook a delicious healthy
meal for the rest of the group. It’s a great way to
discover new recipes and share experiences and
tips for better health and wellness.
Even if you mess up here and there, remember
the key is not to beat yourself up about it
and get back on the horse. 2022 is a time for
transformative change, so make the most of it.
Get your om on
Shoulder pain. Stiff necks. Weakening of your neck and back. Joint issues.
These are just some of the probs working from home, and too many hours
spent hunched over the computer, have caused. It’s all become a pain in the
neck. Quite literally.
So say Namaste to the five simple yoga inspired stretches that can be done
right at your desk, shared by Joëlle Sleebos, who’s Head of Yoga at Virgin
Active, who has cherry-picked these five yoga inspired stretches to help with
posture, neck pain and more that can be done at your desk - wherever that
may be. So, get your om on and reduce discomfort, aches and pains, all in a
day’s work.
Wrist and finger stretch While seated, take the fingertips of one hand into
the palm of your other hand. Extend that same arm forward, at shoulderheight,
and gently pull your fingers down toward the back of your wrist until
you feel a slight stretch. This stretch will give your wrists some relief from
frantic typing, and has the added benefit of lowering your risk of carpal tunnel
syndrome. Hold the pose and breathe for three to five slow breaths, then
switch hands.
Seated Tadasana Reach your arms above your head, aligning your wrists over
shoulders. Inhale: Activate your fingers and arms by reaching your hands to
the ceiling and spreading your fingers as wide as possible. Engage your abs as
you sit up tall. Exhale: Relax your shoulders, align your head directly over your
torso and slightly lift your chin up and in towards your throat to help stretch
and straighten the back of your neck, your spine and find a good posture.
Hold the pose and breathe for three to five slow breath cycles.
Seated Lateral Side Stretch Move into this stretch directly from the seated
tadasana. Extend your right arm overhead toward the left side of your body
and relax your left arm down. Feel the length on the right side of your torso
from the right hip to right armpit. Your palm can face to the left and shift
your gaze toward your bicep if your neck allows – don’t force your neck into
any discomfort. Create space between your shoulders and ears, keeping your
shoulders relaxed and in line with your desk and each other to avoid leaning
forward or back — only sideways. Hold the pose and breathe for three to five
slow breaths. Then switch sides to lengthen your abdominal muscles while
improving spinal flexibility.
Seated Spinal Twist Move into this stretch directly from the seated tadasana.
Bring your hand to your shoulders, lift your elbows to the side at the same
level as your shoulders. Inhale: broaden your chest and look straight in front of
you. Exhale: Twist and look to the right, while maintaining your hips in place.
You may extend your arms and actively reach your right arm behind you and
the left arm to the front. Then switch sides to improve spinal strength and
flexibility, reduce back pain and improve your digestion.
Seated Forward fold and backbend Take a moment, give yourself a little
more space, and take a deep breath before leaning forward slowly into a
Paschimottanasana – or a seated forward bend. Focus on slowly extending the
top half of the body over the seated lower half – gradually stretching out while
controlling your abdomen and elongating your back. To counter the forward
fold, sit upright with a deep inhale before moving into the seated backbend.
Stretch your hands down a few centimetres behind your hips and hold on to
the edges of your chair. Push into the chair and reach your shoulder blades
down and back. Hug your belly in as you blossom your heart and lift your
chest up and forward. Lift your gaze slightly and if it feels comfortable you can
gently tilt your head backwards too, but be careful of discomfort in your neck.
Hold the poses and breathe for three to five slow breaths.
More than anything, yoga is about breathing. As you work towards stretching
out those pandemic-induced kinks in your body, remember to take time to
close your eyes and really focus on taking five to ten deep, slow breaths before
you dive back into your inbox. Your neck, spine and spirit will thank you.
Muscles in a bottle ...
for when hard work isn’t enough
SA sport enjoys an image of excellence and achievement, but beneath the surface lies
an uneasy truth that tears at the heart of this notion. Clinton van der Berg, head of
communication at SuperSport, tackles the subject in his book Guns and Needles.
TEXT: The Penguin Post, a magazine about books for book lovers from Penguin Random
House South Africa. Details: penguinrandomhouse.co.za/penguin-post-latest-issue
Several weeks before I began writing Guns and Needles, I ran into Bruce
Fordyce at the launch of his book. “The only good thing about this
lockdown,” he grumbled, “is that everyone has a book inside us.”
‘It was the spur to get cracking, not least because South Africa’s greatest ultramarathoner
– and a superb raconteur – had laid down the challenge.
My obsession with sport meant that the drip-drip news of steroids and drugs
in sport had been near constant for 30 years. The stories floated in and out of
the news cycle on an almost monthly basis. As a newspaperman, I often wrote
them. What was remarkable was that the cases took in all sport and cut across
all demographics. No sport was a no-go, even with the warnings, the dangers of
being tested and the inevitable social shame.
I was drawn to these episodes for several reasons, chiefly because of the
characters involved. Many were world-class athletes – but they had feet of clay.
Each story was different, remarkable in its own way and utterly beguiling. The
more I dug around, the more I realised that there was a compelling narrative that
took in varying elements: shame, competition, ego, naiveté, arrogance.
I threw myself into the project because there was so much information to sift
through, so many stories to consider. Such a book demanded to be written.
Guns and Needles does more than merely document South Africa’s
extraordinary trajectory of cheating and doping; it sounds a warning to young
participants, and indeed their parents, of the dangers of opting for the needle or
tablet for an extra boost. It’s never worth it, even for the momentary high or the
gold medal.
There is no doubt that doping has a sexy appeal. You can get big and buff and
push yourself to extraordinary levels, but few who do so ever get away with it.
There is an endless game of cat and mouse that is played between the doping
chiefs and the cheats. No doubt some dopers get away from time to time, but
the hammer often comes down hard on those whose bad habits are uncovered.
Their bodies litter the sporting landscape.
I discovered an interesting parallel between athletes’ behaviour and indeed the
zeitgeist of the country. The growing indifference to laws and regulations, which
spiked during the pandemic, gave rise to similar sentiments within sport. An
anything-goes culture has developed, which may explain the ubiquitous status
of steroids in gyms and elsewhere. When someone pops for steroids, few are
really surprised. The embarrassment passes quickly.
We live in a country where sport is held up as a symbol of hope and unity. It truly
does bring South Africans together, but the warmth and bonhomie of sport in
popular culture is also a mirage.
The book is essentially a mirror of South African society, poking beneath
its ugly underbelly and revealing the parts we don’t particularly enjoy
seeing, or pretend don’t exist.
COOL DOWN
Frozen lollies, a fresh salad, crisp Sauv Blanc ... chill out!
Our days are still hot and steamy (we do love
Summer!) ... and to chill down, not much
beats chilled fresh and fruity plums, peaches
and nectarines. They’re versatile, delish, and
pack a low-calorie nutritious punch. Naturally
sweet, these super fruits have a low glycemic
index (GI), are high in fibre and health-giving
potassium and vitamins A, C and E ... allpowerful
antioxidants that protect against
disease and help to build healthy minds and
bodies. Eat them straight from the fridge, or
make up some refreshing frozen treats ... you’ll
find more on juicydelicious.co.za or on IG
@juicydelicioussa.
Tip: All stone fruit
are at their most satisfying
when enjoyed perfectly ripe.
To test, lightly press the skin. If still
firm to the touch, allow them to
ripen in a fruit bowl or keep them
in a pierced paper bag at room
temperature. Only keep the fruit
in the fridge once they are
completely ripe.
Frozen plum lollies
This Jenny Morris recipe makes a dozen lollies.
You’ll need: 8 fat plums; half a cup raw honey; half a
teaspoon vanilla extract; 2 cups natural yoghurt
To make: Cut a cross into the base of each plum
and plunge into boiling water, then remove with
a slotted spoon. Peel off the skins and remove the
flesh from the stone.
Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake holders.
Blend the plum flesh, honey, vanilla extract and
yoghurt in a food processor until smooth. Taste
and add a little more honey if too tart.
Divide the mixture between the muffin holes and
freeze till firm. When almost firm insert a lolly stick
into each one. (you’ll find sticks at Checkers)
Frozen peach & yoghurt shake
Jenny Morris suggests pouring this shake into a
flask for your child to enjoy perfectly chilled at
school. This makes four shakes.
You’ll need: 2 cups vanilla ice cream; 1 banana
sliced and frozen; one-and-a-half cups chopped
and frozen dessert peaches; 1 cup Greek yoghurt
To make: Remove the frozen fruit from the freezer
and place it in a blender with the remaining
ingredients. Blend until smooth, pour into glasses
and garnish with fresh mint.
A glass of wine and a
salmon salad
We’re of the ‘a glass a day is good for
you’ school of thought. And we all
know the health benefits of salmon -
rich in omega-3 fatty acids, loaded with
B vitamins, and an excellent source of
protein. So it really would be a remiss
of you not to try this salmon salad with
a glass of Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon
Blanc on the side.
You can also use hot smoked trout
(cooled and flaked) for this salad - you’ll
find it in the fish deli section of most
good supermarkets.
You can whip this Ilse van der Merwe
recipe up in less than 10 minutes, and it
serves four.
You’ll need: 1 bunch watercress leaves,
rinsed; 1/2 cucumber, peeled into
ribbons with a peeler; 1 fennel bulb,
finely cut and shaved; 200g cold
smoked salmon or trout ribbons; 100g
ricotta cheese, crumbled; a handful
capers; fresh lemon juice; extra virgin
olive oil; freshly ground black pepper
and salt, to taste
To make: On a large salad platter (or
on four individual plates), assemble
the watercress leaves, then top with
cucumber, fennel, salmon/trout, ricotta
and capers. Drizzle with lemon juice
and olive oil, then season to taste with
salt & pepper.
Serve immediately with a glass of
Spier 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc ... a
pale lemon-green bright, fresh and
invigorating Sauv Blanc, with refreshing
hints of lemongrass and a lip-smacking,
saline finish. R190 from shop.spier.co.za
The art of fine food
We’ve discovered a new fine-dining gem and it’s worth raving about!
Hidden in the leafy suburbs of
Waterkloof Ridge, Tribute Restaurant
at the Apogee Boutique Hotel & Spa is
an absolute gem … a restaurant that
sets high, higher, highest standards in
terms exceptional food and service.
We admit, for a moment, we did find
ourselves debating whether to keep it
a secret or tell everyone we know!
Headed up by chef Clayton Prescott,
Tribute’s new a la carte menu is what
food dreams are made of. With a
decade and a half of experience under
his toque, this executive chef and his
equally brilliant team would like their
‘culinary philosophy, inspiration, and
passion to reflect with each dish they
present’. And it sure does.
Some of the creations on the menu
that scream order-me-order-me are
the grilled aged rib eye served with
crayfish ravioli alongside pickled fennel,
oyster mushroom, pea purée and beef
jus; the cannelloni filled with springbok
loin ragout, glossed with a rich sage
and red wine jus and topped with
teriyaki mushrooms and kale crisps;
and the smoked trout terrine, dressed
with a Dashi and chive vinaigrette with
a herbed blood orange bruschetta,
which is, trust us, absolutely to die for!
The vegetarian options are simply
exquisite … think pickled pineapple
and cilantro Dim Sum with yuzu puree
and a cranberry tuille filled with a
Roquefort crema; chardonnay-braised
leeks, whipped feta, poached pear,
toasted hazelnuts served with sumacdusted
pani puri of crispy ricotta
fritters served with a light green curry
sauce ... veggie yum!
For a sweet ending, we really
recommend the apple Tart Tatin
served with vanilla Chantilly cream,
or the almond and cocoa crumble
topped with 70 per cent dark Callebaut
Cremieux, caramelised hazelnut ice
cream and a butterscotch sauce.
Regardless of whether you’re in the
mood for a hearty or light dish, you
should find something to suit. Local
flavours and ingredients are given a
fresh new twist and the attention to
detail … on point every time.
Chic, minimalist interior, strategically
placed, hand-picked local art and
beautiful views of the city ... definitely,
our go-to option if you want to
impress. Booking is recommended.
Garden tasks for March
Nurture your flowers by watering once a week
and feed with a granular or liquid fertiliser
once during the month. • Rake up all the
fallen leaves and use them as mulch or add
them, together with Summer annuals that
are over, to the compost heap. • Add Autumn
colour to the garden with purple flowers and
shrubs like Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’,
indigenous Ribbon bush (Hypoestes) Salvia
purple and bloom, and Petunia Shock Wave
purple tie die. • Fertilise shrubs with 5:1:5 or
8:1:5 to strengthen them for winter. Water
camellias and azaleas regularly to encourage
the development of spring buds. • Wait until
night temperatures drop to 10 or 12˚C. before
planting pansies, violas, Iceland poppies,
snapdragons, calendula and primulas. • Start
planning and preparing beds for spring bulbs.
Buy bulbs early before they are sold out but only
plant towards the end of March and in early
April. • Keep your lawn green during winter
by fertilising now with Ludwig’s Vigorosa and
water regularly.
We’re planting … Lobelia Curaçao Blue Bay ... which is like a breath of seaside
air! Its blue-white flowers are larger than conventional lobelia flowers, and they
ripple like frothy waves over the sturdy, compact plant. Curacao is a strong
growing lobelia, with a mounding habit that quickly fills out, up to 25cm,
good for containers, or in the garden as a border and with other yellow or
white flowers. Think alyssum, diascia, nemesia, pansies, and violas. It also works
well as an underplanting for roses in pots. Blue Bay prefers sun in Winter and
semi-shade in Summer, and it flowers through to Winter. Don’t over-water
as this encourages root rot. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
Veggie of the month - Purple Sprouting broccoli
If you are going to plant broccoli, why not make it a
statement! That’s what you can do with Purple Sprouting
broccoli, a heirloom variety from RAW seed. It is a beauty,
with its deep purple head and blue-grey leaves. Being purple,
it contains the antioxidant Anthocyanin, which plays a key role in
protecting our health. Once the head is harvested, it continues to
produce lots of tender side shoots. Purple Sprouting broccoli has a
sweet, earthy flavour and it turns green when cooked.
Tips: March is the best time to sow, directly
into the soil or into seed trays. • Grow
broccoli in full sun in Winter, in well
composted soil. • The final
spacing of plants should be
30m apart. • Keep the soil
moist and fertilise with a
nitrogen rich liquid feed once a month. •
The heads should be ready to harvest within 120
to 150 days from germination.

BOLD PLANTS
We’re making a statement this March with shades of
blue, purple veg and pretty polka dots.
Indoor plant of the month
Begonia ‘Polka Dot ‘ has to be one of the cutest indoor plants
around. Perfect for the bedroom, a home office that needs
cheering up, even the patio. This begonia likes bright, indirect light
or filtered sun. It even survives in lower light, but its leaves will burn
if exposed to direct sunlight. Water once a week but be careful
of over-watering. If the soil is still moist when you check it, wait
another day or two and check again. Feed with a liquid fertiliser
once a month in summer. As a bonus, alongside its colourful
leaves, Polka dot produces sprays of white flowers in Summer.
A proper treat for mountain biking
enthusiasts, these Biking In The
Bush getaways at Shamwari
Private Game Reserve include a bit
of luxury ... and who doesn’t want
that after three or four hours in
the saddle.
The idea is to enjoy a guided cycle
every morning, with afternoon
game drives and guided walks,
and then luxury all the way in the
gorgeous Bayethe Lodge.
Andrew Kearney, ranger manager
at Shamwari and a keen rider
himself, says the rides are suitable
for people who cycle regularly and
are reasonably fit, and assures it’s
absolutely not a race but rather
about the experience of cycling
through the bush and chance
encounters with a variety of wildlife.
The aim, he says, is to count time
in the saddle rather than the
kilometres ridden.
He stresses safety is a priority and
cyclists receive a detailed briefing
before each ride. Two experienced
guides accompany each group and
one guide will wait with anyone
who needs to stop, with a sweeper
vehicle picking up anyone who is
unable to continue the ride.
The rides vary depending on game
sightings, animal movements,
the weather and fitness of the
groups. All take place in the wilder
wilderness area in the north of the
reserve, where there are no other
people or vehicles.
It’s a fabulous weekend for a group
of friends (minimum of six, max of
eight, all need to be 16 or older,
with those 65-plus asked to provide
confirmation of their fitness). If
you’re more of an e-biker ... they’re
permitted, but they, along with
faster riders, do have to stay with
the group. Dates coming up are
March 3 to 6, March 17 to 20, March
31 to April 3 and May 5 to 8. Rates
are R4950 per person, sharing,
which include accommodation, all
guided rides, guided walks, game
drives, meals, visits to the Wildlife
Rehabilitation Centre and Born Free
Big Cat Rescue Centre, pre-game
drive refreshments and game drive
drinks and snacks. Details: Bookings
Looking to enhance your sporting
performance, recover quicker, sleep
better and prevent injuries? Then you’ll be
keen to learn more about the Hyperice
Hypervolt 2 percussion massage therapy
gun ... the new must-have device to
hit the local market. Whether you’re a
professional athlete, a weekend cycler, or
hiker, you should warm up quickly, stay
loose, and accelerate recovery at home.
But still, you could (and often do) end up
with tension and sore muscles. Which is
where percussion therapy comes in. But
what, exactly, is it, and how is it beneficial
to people who live an active lifestyle?
Simply put, percussive therapy helps
muscles recover faster while reducing
muscle pain, muscle fatigue and lactic
acid build-up. A massager gun uses the
force of percussive therapy (also known
as vibration therapy) to manipulate your
body’s soft tissue, and allows you to focus
on a certain muscle group or muscle
knots for immediate pain relief. Perfectly
safe to use, it’s ideal for everyone from
CrossFitters and dancers to gym buffs,
home-gymmers or people who just want
to push themselves. The Hypervolt 2 Pro,
the strongest percussion device available,
boats a digital dial which delivers 5 speeds
of percussion; a pill shaped handle for
better control and a more comfortable
hold and patented technology which
showcases how much pressure is being
applied. You’ll find them at Takealot,
Gear4U and EveryShop for R7999.
