Writing of Buddhist Books:<br />

King Vijayabahu brought in all the best scholars of the country and had them write eighty four<br />

thousand divisions of the doctrine. (Buddhism).<br />

(Author’s Note: It is not clear whether the Tripitaka was re-written during King Vijayabahu’s<br />

time using existing books or by memory of monks).<br />

King built harmony among people of Tisihala.<br />

(Author’s Note: <strong>Mahavamsa</strong> mentions the word “Tisihala” for the first time, indicating Ruhunu,<br />

Pihiti, and Maya).<br />

King built a park named Vijayasundara and gave it to bhikkus.<br />

Vijayabahu Pirivena:<br />

King built a Vihara in Vattalagama and named it Vijayabahu Vihara. (Vattala, a town close to<br />

Colombo mentioned here in <strong>Mahavamsa</strong>).<br />

King Vijayabahu ruled the country in perfect fashion for four years.<br />

~KING PARAKRAMABAHU II~<br />

(1234 AD – 1269 AD)<br />

After the death of King Vijayabahu, his son Parakramabahu became the ruler of the country. King<br />

Parakramabahu was a scholar and was known as Sabbanu Panditha Parakramabahu.<br />

(Author’s Note: King Dutugamunu was the hero of the first part of <strong>Mahavamsa</strong> <strong>com</strong>piled by<br />

Mahathera Mahanama. King Parakramabahu I was the hero of the second part of <strong>Mahavamsa</strong><br />

<strong>com</strong>piled by Dhammakitti Thera. Parakramabahu II is the hero of this portion of <strong>Mahavamsa</strong>. Author<br />

of this portion of <strong>Mahavamsa</strong> is not known).<br />

Lesser Punishments for Criminals:<br />

King Parakramabahu reduced the punishment for prisoners. People who were sentenced to death were<br />

given prison terms. People who were sentenced to prison were given reduced sentences. People who<br />

had short prison sentences were fined and released.<br />

Unification of the Country:<br />

King Parakramabahu thought, Asela the son of Mutaseeva vanquished two horse traders Sena and<br />

Gutthika. Then Great King Dutugamunu defeated King Elara and unified the country. Then<br />

Vatthagamini Abhaya destroyed seven Damila Generals and protected the country. Then mighty<br />

Dhatusena chased away the six Chola Kings in the North. Then Great Vijayabahu defeated the mighty<br />

Chola army and protected the triple gem. Now it is my turn to defeat the foreign rule in the north and<br />

unify the country.
