Deeply saddened queen sent love poems to the prison cell of Dascon. She wrote in prose that without
enjoying the forest flowers, he went to suck at the must from elephant’s cheek and got crushed by the
elephant’s ear. Dascon in return replied to the queen that it is a pleasure to sacrifice his head for the
love of her.
Queen wrote:
Thun Kala Thumula Vanaye mal rasa novindha
Kanthala Gajan Kopulata bingu ronata veda
Kanthala pahara vani nirinduta asuvuna hinda
Pinkala hithanuvani dhan thavenu kumatadha?
Dascon replied:
Vises kamalava rasa pahasa novindama
Dasis duni purana asa dutu pamanatama
Veses numbe amayuru pahasa lath pema
Mahis ekak giya nam numbe namata kima?
Wimala Dharmasuriya II: (1687 AD – 1707 AD)
After the death of King Rajasiha II, his son Wimala Dharmasuriya became the ruler. King Wimala
Dharmasuriya wanted to ordain more bhikkus due to lack of bhikkus in the country. King sent
invitations to bhikkus in Rakkhanga (South Burma) to come to Lanka to reinstate the Buddha Sasana.
Thirty three Burmese bhikkus under the leadership of Thera Santhana arrived.
King accepted them with dignity and provided them with all necessities. King had thirty three new
bhikkus and one hundred and twenty five novice bhikkus ordained.
(Author’s Note: Bhikkus from Burma was previously brought in by King Wimala Dharmasuriya I
before. Apparently that was not enough. Ships for the transportation of bhikkus were provided by the
Dutch. During this King’s time period there were no wars with the Dutch. Compared to Rajasiha II,
he was a mild mannered King. This King allowed the Portuguese missionary priest Joseph Vaz to
build a church in Kandy).
Arrival of Joseph Vaz: (Not mentioned in Mahavamsa)
After the defeat of Portuguese, Dutch suppressed Roman Catholicism in the coastal areas. Roman
Catholic priest Joseph Vaz heard of the sorry state of Catholicism and came to Lanka to revive it. He
lived in hiding in Dutch controlled areas as a messenger. Dutch were actively suppressing any Roman
Catholic missionary work in the coastal towns.
Indian priest Joseph Vaz decided to move to the Kandy kingdom. A Dutch man tipped the King that a
Portuguese spy was about to enter. King arrested Joseph Vaz and brought him to Kandy.
After questioning him, King decided that he was harmless and asked to leave the kingdom and never to
return. But later priest Joseph Vaz returned and had a cordial relationship with the King.
King allowed priest Joseph Vaz to build a church in Kandy. This is the very first Roman Catholic
Church in a Sinhala controlled area built with the permission of a Sinhala King.
