Portrait of a Nation II: Beyond Narratives
More than 100 key artworks, including
15 special commissions, anchor the
programme, exploring the work of over
60 pivotal artists, from the founders
of the UAE art scene to today’s
emerging generation, through painting,
photography, 3D installations and
audio- visual works. 'Portrait of a Nation
II' expands far beyond the dimensions
of a traditional art exhibition, capturing
the spirit of the UAE art scene’s past,
present and future. Weaving together
the voices of curators, cultural workers,
gallerists and artists, it reflects an art
scene that defies categorization and
reveals a deeply inspiring evolution.

Aref El Rayess
With a body of work spanning tapestry,
sculpture, and painting inspired by
a lifetime of travel between Senegal,
Lebanon, and Paris, self-taught artist
Aref El Rayess' museum retrospective
brings together rarely seen works,
in which motifs from West African
folklore blend with abstraction. The
pastel on paper Paysage (2022),
for instance, recovers bright colour
palettes evocative of traditional
African garments to create a French
countryside landscape using an
assemblage of near-geometric shapes,
conveying impressions caught in
passage.
