WHAT IS IT ABOUT SPRING,<br />
EASTER, AND, EGGS?<br />
Ancient civilizations celebrated the<br />
vernal equ<strong>in</strong>ox or the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a variety of ways from a<br />
Roman god who castrated himself<br />
when he attempted to marry a mortal<br />
and was dissuaded by his god lover,<br />
to horse races, throw<strong>in</strong>g roses, to a<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>ese myth of a goddess swallow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
an egg. In Japan a festival as part of<br />
Sh<strong>in</strong>toism prior to WWII that celebrated<br />
“imperial ancestors’ Many weird myths<br />
commemorate the celebration of<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The vernal equ<strong>in</strong>ox is a celebration of<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g observ<strong>in</strong>g the life cycles return<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to life after a w<strong>in</strong>ter of be<strong>in</strong>g dormant,<br />

birds lay<strong>in</strong>g eggs, animals birth<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
offspr<strong>in</strong>g, plants blossom<strong>in</strong>g, etc. In the<br />
Christian religion, spr<strong>in</strong>g is a celebration<br />
of the resurrection of Jesus Christ after<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g crucified by a Roman emperor.<br />
Throughout history, eggs have been an<br />
<strong>in</strong>tegral aspect of the celebration of<br />
spr<strong>in</strong>g. In a previous article on the arts<br />
of Ukra<strong>in</strong>e, a mention was made of the<br />
pysanka decorated eggs. These were<br />
decorated eggs us<strong>in</strong>g a wax resist or<br />
a method called batic where color is<br />
<strong>in</strong>terspersed between the wax resist to<br />
create elaborately decorated eggs<br />
which were given as gifts to friends and<br />
relatives.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the late 1800s, the Roamnof<br />
Tsars who ruled Russia were <strong>in</strong>spired<br />
by the Ukra<strong>in</strong>ian batic designed eggs<br />

fled Russia. The Faberge name was<br />

tr<strong>in</strong>kets for the wealthy. One of the last<br />
