Anzac Day commemorates
New Zealanders killed in
war and honours returned
and serving servicemen and
women.
Anzac Day was first observed in
1916. The day has gone through
many changes since.
Each year ceremonies are held
at war memorials throughout
New Zealand, and in places
overseas where New Zealanders
gather. The ceremonies are
modelled on a military funeral
and remain rich in tradition and
ritual. People of all ages rise
early on Anzac Day to pay their
respects to those who have
fought and died in war.
The Vintage Car Club VCC Dutton Garage Malvern Run is
all set to go on 25 April. The annual vintage car rally kicks
off at 10am from the Darfield Recreation Centre, where club
members meet for morning tea with their cars on public
display until 11am. The rally visits war memorials in Darfield,
Sheffield, Hororata, Glenroy and Glentunnel.
Event co-ordinator Malcolm McGibbon says there is a
good cross-section of cars taking part including cars from
Ashburton plus the oldest registered car in New Zealand,
a 1900 Wolseley, making its annual trip from Dunedin. The
rally finishes in Glentunnel around 1pm.
Poppy Day turns 100
This year celebrates 100 years of selling poppies in
New Zealand. In 1922 on 24 April, the day before Anzac Day,
more than 260,000 poppies were sold to help the war-torn
areas in Northern France and to help returned soldiers and
their families. A total of £13,166 was raised (equal to $1.34
million in 2020) with a portion being sent to France and the
remaining amount retained for New Zealand soldiers.
The idea of selling poppies came from French woman
Madame E. Guerin, who wanted to help veterans and
destitute children. The poppies were originally manufactured
by widows and orphans in Northern France and sold prior
to Armistice Day on 11 November, however the New Zealand
Returned Soldiers’ Association’s (NZRSA) order did not
arrive in time, so their first Poppy Day was launched the
following year the day before Anzac Day in 1922.
The Poppy Day Appeal is NZRSA’s primary source of
fundraising to help New Zealand returned service personnel
and their families.
