Selwyn is in great demand for
retirement living opportunities. As
people age, they may be looking

Estate in Rolleston says there
has been more interest recently
in retirement living. She thinks
Covid-19 may have been a factor.
She suggests, “People being isolated
has a lot of people thinking about
coming into a village.” As sales of
the 2/3-bedroom duplexes and
standalone villas have been so
successful, she states, “we can’t
build them fast enough” to meet the
demand. She advised that it used
to be just people from Rolleston
moving into the retirement
villages, but it now appears they are
relocating from other parts of New
Zealand to live in Selwyn. As with
the real estate market, buyers from
the North Island are getting better
value with their sales proceeds
to buy into a village retirement
property in the Selwyn region.
Other retirement villages within
Selwyn also confirm an ongoing
demand for retirement living, with
the land purchased to construct
more villas, apartments, hospitals
and care facilities. For example,
Karen from the Boulevard in
Rolleston says they are seeing more
demand for larger 2/3-bedroom
villas with double garages. She
states, “The demographics of elderly
are not high in Rolleston compared
to other areas, but people who
might be moving closer to their
family do increase it.” That desire
for social connection has seen
people returning to Christchurch
and choosing the lifestyle and sense
of community that a retirement
village can provide.
