successful, she states, “we can’t<br />

build them fast enough” to meet the<br />

demand. She advised that it used<br />

to be just people from Rolleston<br />

moving into the retirement<br />

villages, but it now appears they are<br />

relocating from other parts of New<br />

Zealand to live in <strong>Selwyn</strong>. As with<br />

the real estate market, buyers from<br />

the North Island are getting better<br />

value with their sales proceeds<br />

to buy into a village retirement<br />

property in the <strong>Selwyn</strong> region.<br />

Other retirement villages within<br />

<strong>Selwyn</strong> also confirm an ongoing<br />

demand for retirement living, with<br />

the land purchased to construct<br />

more villas, apartments, hospitals<br />

and care facilities. For example,<br />

Karen from the Boulevard in<br />

Rolleston says they are seeing more<br />

demand for larger 2/3-bedroom<br />

villas with double garages. She<br />

states, “The demographics of elderly<br />

are not high in Rolleston compared<br />

to other areas, but people who<br />

might be moving closer to their<br />

family do increase it.” That desire<br />

for social connection has seen<br />

people returning to Christchurch<br />

and choosing the lifestyle and sense<br />

of community that a retirement<br />

village can provide.<br />
