As a badge, it has been around since the early 80s, its sedan and wagon body style drawing a wide cross-section of buyers from both the business and private sector. In recent years the Camry for the New Zealand market has been available as a 2.5-litre petrol model, with much the same engine aligned to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system and, of course, the powerful V6 variant that later morphed into Aurion. Over the years the Camry has been available with a multitude of specification options, at one point there were eight Camry variants on offer here. Today, and sadly a reflection of buying trends that favour sport utility vehicles against the tradition of sedans, the Camry is available here with just three specification options. The most dramatic change within the series is that it is now only available with the hybrid driveline, which is a way of lowering carbon emissions. I like sedans, I like the Camry as a concept, and if there was a hybrid in the Kiddie-family car buying future, it would be difficult not to choose a Camry, it’s long been my favourite hybrid. Saying that, of course, the same 2.5-litre hybrid driveline powers other Toyota and Lexus models. For 2022, the Camry here has had bit of a facelift and a SLEEK: The Toyota Camry sits low and long. realignment, there is more bling in the model, and the body style has had enhancements. Depending on the variant, there is a new grille, bumper and wheels. Plus, there is more emphasis in differentiation between variants. The changes come at a very opportune time, the Camry qualifies for the Government’s low emission rebate scheme, depending on the variant a buyer can recoup between $2748 and $3160. The Camry hybrid lists from $43,990, the test car was the high-spec leather-trimmed ZR model at $52,490, while a sporty SX version sits in-between at $48,490. I’m due to drive the latter soon, and that would probably be the specification I would look for, its sport tuned suspension and 19in wheels make it enticing. However, the ZR model is there for those who like the feel of luxury, and it’s fair to say in top-spec form the Camry borders on the luxury car market, it is plush, it has all the fitment and features Toyota has in its bag of goodies, and it is a wonderfully comfortable car to drive and to ride in. Space is plentiful, the rear seat occupants can stretch their legs, while shoulder and head room is in abundance. Column space doesn’t allow for comprehensive detailing, but major items fitted for comfort and convenience amount to TOYOTA CAMRY ZR: Borders on the luxury car market. satellite navigation, head-up display, electrically adjustable front seats that have heating and cooling, electrically adjustable steering column, electric panoramic sunroof and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Of course, the Camry also gets a five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program rating, it has all of the electronic functions that make up the Toyota Safety Sense suite of kit. Under the bonnet sits a fourcylinder engine. Toyota rates it with a petrol/electric combined total of 160kW and 213Nm, with those healthy figures it is a powerful unit, it is lively and feels very torquey. As such, it feels very normal to drive, of course it wants to drive in electric mode all of the time, but such are the throttle demands that can’t realistically happen. The driver is always fully aware of what is happening in terms of propulsion, there are a raft of gauges and displays to let you know about the hybrid operation, and if you are astute you can feel the engine cutting in and out, but if you don’t take any of that on-board, you could be forgiven for thinking that you are driving a standard petrol-engined 2.5-litre car. Performance is strong and the Camry hybrid is quick – a standstill to 100km/h time of • Price – Toyota Camry ZR hybrid, $52,490 • Dimensions – Length, 4905mm; width, 1840mm; height, 1445mm • Configuration – Fourcylinder, front-wheeldrive, 2498cc, 160kW, 213Nm, continuously variable automatic • Performance – 0-100km/h, 8.1sec • Fuel usage – 4.2/100km 8.1sec is on offer and it will scamper through a highway overtake in 6.9sec (80-120km/h). But the figures that are most important are those of fuel usage. Toyota rates the hybrid system with a best possible 4.2-litre per 100km combined cycle average. At the end of a week with the test car I returned it to the dealership showing an average of 6.4l/100km. These are good figures for a big car, and particularly for one that weighs in at over 1.5-tonne. It must also be said I commuted daily into the city centre and that type of stop-start travel isn’t good for fuel economy. I also drove the Camry briskly during testing time, it feels strong beneath the accelerator and has handling to match. In a corner the Camry hybrid stays flat, at just 1.44m tall there is little gravitational change, nor body movement. High quality Bridgestone Turanza tyres are fitted, at 235/45 x 18in they offer high grip levels and provide solid information to the steering wheel. Turn-in is direct, while suspension movement easily arrests midcorner bumps and deviations. The spring and damper rates are well engineered for the rough nature of Canterbury’s roads, providing the comfort levels we all expect from a big car. The Camry also has one of the biggest load spaces for a sedan that I can recall in recent times, even in hybrid form the boot space is cavernous. It’s no wonder, then, that Camry has been a taxi favourite over the years. Toyota has addressed that need, the entrylevel model will fill that role well, but what it has also done well is making the Camry desirable for those who don’t want to plunge into the SUV market. There are plenty of people like me who like sedans, and Camry hybrid will lure many who feel like they are doing something for the environment but want a bigger hybrid than Prius. At the same time, any Camry buyer will know it has the benefit of a hybrid system that has been well proven and has Toyota’s three-year/100,000km warranty. has motoring covered!
