Selwyn Times Wednesday April 20 2022 8 NEWS DUNSANDEL builder Dan Michael has been named Canterbury’s top apprentice. The 20-year-old won the New Zealand Certified Builders regional apprentice challenge on April 9. Among eight entrants given just eight hours to build a park bench to specific design plans, Michael received the top score overall. The finished products had been assessed on their the quality of workmanship, including measuring, cutting and assembly. Michael is undertaking his apprenticeship at Taylormade Builders. He has now earned a place in the national final representing Canterbury. There he will compete against 19 other regional winners from across New Zealand for the Ken Read Memorial Trophy and $25,000 worth of prizes. The national final will be held at the NZCB annual conference in Hamilton in November. NZCB industry pathways and apprenticeship manager Nick Matthews said the competition highlighted a high-calibre of apprentices, following a record uptake of building apprenticeships in recent years. “Nationwide we’re seeing increasing numbers of eager and talented apprentices entering the trade from a variety of backgrounds. The regional competitions have really set the bar for what excellence looks like ahead of the national final,” Matthews said. Residents noticed a lone kōtuku in the wetland area at Ahuriri Lagoon over a two-week period, before it flew off a few days ago. “It either ran out of frogs or there were too many people down there,” one resident told the Selwyn Times. “We live not far from the lagoon and walk there threeto-four times a week with our dog. It’s a stunning spot and the bird life has certainly picked up around the area as a result of all the planting. We’ve also had spoonbills there,” she said. The native kōtuku is a protected species. It had mythical status for Māori because of its rarity and beauty. Featuring on the $2 coin, the bird is widespread in Asia and Australia but is believed to number only in the hundreds in New Zealand. The constructed wetland, named Whakaora Te Ahuriri, was completed in 2020. Located between Tai Tapu and Motukārara on the Little River Rail Trail, it has involved engineering and earthworks over four hectares, and the installation of 132,000 plants. The budget for Ellesmere Water Race, changes to water race rating across the district, and a new $20 ecological enhancement targeted rate. The latter would support improving the district’s land drainage network which provides biodiversity, ecological habitat and flood protection. Consultation will run to May 19. It had been surprising to see how quickly life had returned to the wetland. “When the plants were installed, and then the water flowed into the wetland, it immediately brought fish and insects, and birds quickly followed,” Murphy said. Other birds seen there were pāpango/scaup, kārukiruhi/pied shag, warou/welcome swallow, kahu/swamp harrier, poaka/pied stilt and pukeko. Meanwhile, restoration of another wetland will begin soon. The district council said in its draft annual plan released last week that restoration of the 81ha Tārerekautuku/Yarrs Lagoon near Lincoln is expected to get under way in the coming year.
