Palmas Academy Student...<br />
RECEIVED AN AWARD!<br />
at the Metropolitan Regional Science & Engineering Fair<br />
The Palmas Academy students<br />
participated in the Metropolitan<br />
Regional Science and Engineering<br />
Fair for the fourth consecutive<br />
year under the direction of<br />
Dr. Sonia Villaverde, a science<br />
teacher at TPA. Fifteen projects<br />
were selected as finalists by their<br />
teacher; these nineteen students<br />
went to the Science Fair on Tuesday,<br />
March 1st, at the Polytechnic<br />
University in San Juan to present<br />
their projects in one of the most<br />
prestigious judged events on the<br />
island. The award ceremony was<br />
held on Saturday, March 5th, and<br />
every student of the Palmas Academy<br />
who participated received<br />
an award. Isabel Vega sang the<br />
national anthem and was accompanied<br />
by Carolina Berrios on the<br />
piano. The awards won by the TPA<br />
students are the following: In the<br />
category of Behavioral Sciences,<br />
Isabel Vega (11th) won 1st place<br />
and the US Navy: Office of Naval<br />
Research Award, Alejandro Caballero<br />
and Juan Carlos Devarie<br />
(11th) won 3rd place and the Best<br />
Set Up Award, Sergio Acevedo<br />
and Marcelo Díaz Alvarado (11th)<br />
2nd place, Savian Molina (11th)<br />
2nd place, Amanda Perez (9th)<br />
2nd place, Alanis Morales (9th)<br />
2nd place, Gian Rosario (9th) 2nd<br />
place, and Stephanie Garcia (9th)<br />
earned 4th place. In the category<br />
of Health and Medicine Bryanna<br />
Bermudez (9th) earned 2nd<br />
place. In the category of Botany<br />
Carolina Berrios and Alexandra<br />
Solis (11th) earned 2nd place. In<br />
the category of Technology Gabriel<br />
Negron and Gabriela Martinez<br />
(11th) earned 2nd place. In the<br />
category of Microbiology Isabella<br />
Ramos (9th) earned 2nd place. In<br />
the category of Environmental Science<br />
Astrid Lázaro (9th) earned 1st<br />
place and the Air Force Research<br />
Laboratory Excellence in Science<br />
Research Award, and Lydia Rivera<br />
(9th) earned 2nd place and Best<br />
Photography. In the category of<br />
Zoology Isabella Rodriguez (9th)<br />
earned 1st place and the Grand<br />
Prize which qualified her to compete<br />
in the International Science<br />
and Engineering Fair (ISEF) which<br />
will be held in Atlanta, Georgia<br />
May 7-14th. Isabella Rodriguez is<br />
the first student from the Palmas<br />
Academy to qualify for the high<br />
school competition. Please, join<br />
