with authors 

Community members and authors came together when Exclusive 

Books Bedford Centre and Get it hosted its first Big Book Club Bash. 

The evening was filled with laughs as fans of Chasing Marian had the 

opportunity to interact with their favourite authors Amy Heydenrych, 

Pamela Power, Gail Schimmel and Qarnita Loxton. Guests were 

presented with gift bags, treated to a glass of wine and were able to 

enjoy a light meal as they browsed the store waiting for the event 

to start. Exclusive Book’s general manger Batya Bricker said one of 

the hardest hit casualties of Covid-19 and its restrictions were book 

clubs. Keeping the audience entertained was Mix FM’s Lundi Khoisan, 

the interlocular for the evening, as she engaged with the authors 

throughout the evening.

A little hope 

for rescue dogs

Dishing up gourmet boeries for charity. Tenile Dreyer and Karen van 

der Merwe, mums from Alberton who competed in My Kitchen Rules, 

hosted a fund-raiser for A New Hope Dog Rescue. The fund-raiser, 

which took place in the parking lot of Crema Coffee Shop, saw the 

two talented chefs create gourmet boerewors rolls. A New Hope Dog 

Shelter is a small family-run dog shelter located in Walkerville. They are 

dependent on sponsorships and donations to remain operational.

Make the best of 

EVERY OPPORTUNITY 

Despite always being on the run while trying to juggle her time running a business and 

being a mum and wife, Tandi Potgieter is always smiling and positive, and most certainly 

saying ‘yes’ to life. 

Being in a demanding full-time job of 

MD at a large printing firm proved just 

too much when Tandi’s third son was 

born, and she knew she had to make 

a change. 

‘I was practically back at my laptop 

hours after giving birth and went back 

to the office a few weeks later.’ 

After a few high-pressured months, 

she realised she will never have time 

with her baby and decided to start her own business that would enable her to 

arrange her days according to her own needs and that of her family. 

‘I used to do the social media side for the company I worked with and really 

enjoyed it. So I decided to open my own social media marketing company, 

Icarus Media. 

‘And guess what? My old firm was my first client,’ she said with a broad smile. 

Her company is now in its fourth year and with three staff members, they manage 

14 brands ranging from vehicle brands to perfume and kitchens. 

‘I can honestly say I work with a dream team. We have recently opened an Influencer 

Division. We have worked with amazing influencers such as Minki van der 



Westhuizen, Natasha Joubert and local 

TikTok stars Mr & Mrs Big Bite.’ 

Hard work pays off 

Tandi has worked since age 16 and 

loved every aspect of business. Being 

born into a home with her mum 

and dad’s strong business influences 

shaped her into a driven and 

hard-working person. 

‘I have been in management roles 

since I was 19. I have also lived in 

London for seven years, where I was a 

buyer for Harrods. I have experience 

in various fields and my greatest skill 

is to improve systems and processes. 

I am passionate about helping small 

businesses flourish, and social media is 

a great way to achieve this. 

‘I also love helping develop women 

and mentoring them to be the best 

they can be.’ 

She is also a marketing partner for 

SOJO Business Tourism with a passion 

to promote business and tourism in 

the South. 

When you are 

going through a 

tough time, just 

remember that it 

passes so quickly 

‘We have just completed our first 

Thaba Eco Challenge, a SOJO charity 

event at Thaba Trails with partners Balwin 

Properties and Group 1 Nissan The 

Glen. We aim to grow this into a large 

annual event for the South. 

‘Can I say working is my hobby? My 

work is very creative and I really get to 

flex my artistic muscles. 

‘I am also partnering with Dr Tshegofatso 

Mathe to host Mrs Soweto, a 

female empowerment programme 

with a focus on charity and tourism 

in Soweto. This will be launched in 

September.’ 

When asked about challenges in her 

job, she immediately said ‘time’. 

‘I know many women have the same 

problem, as we try to take on so many 

roles. I am still working on overcoming 

this. I also know when I say yes to 

something, I am saying no to something else. In my case, that is generally 

precious family time. These days I do think more carefully before agreeing to 

every project.’ 

Highest accolades 

‘My biggest achievement was winning the Chairman’s Award for Excellence at 

Harrods. This was awarded to me by Mohamed Al Fayad, who owned Harrods at 

the time, and it was an incredible feeling to be acknowledged for my work. It also 

gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities. 

‘I was extremely honoured to be made a board member of Dignity Dreams 

NPO. Charity work has always been close to my heart and I was overwhelmed 

with gratitude to be welcomed on the board, where I could make a tangible 

difference.’ 

Dignity Dreams is a charity that provides menstrual health education to young 

women and girls and washable sanitary pads that last up to four years. 

‘That means when you buy a dignity bag, you are directly impacting a girl’s life 

and keeping her in school for up to four years. This is why this charity is so important 

and impactful.

She is also a firm believer that when you turn the focus from your own daily 

struggles to those in real need, it will add perspective and will give great meaning 

to your life. 

‘Nothing fills you with more joy than making a difference, however small, in 

someone’s life. It is very rewarding and can really impact both their lives and 

yours.’ 

Being mum, wife and business owner 

Already admitting she does not have much time, one can’t but to ask how she 

juggles family time and work time. 

‘I think you can only juggle a busy career and family life with the support of your 

family. I am very blessed with my incredibly wonderful and supportive husband, 

Stephen, who is happy to jump in and cook dinner or do bedtime tuck-ins if I am 

busy with a deadline. Our boys also understand that owning your own business 

means you don’t just work from 9am to 5pm. 

‘Then it is also very important to me that we sit at the kitchen table and eat 

dinner together every night so that we have that connection time every day. It 

is a daily balancing act though to make sure I give equal focus to both family 

and work. 

‘I also feel it is important to nurture your marriage by having time alone with your 

husband. We try to go away together or just have a date night.’ 

Treasuring family time means the Potgieter’s garage in their family home in Eye of 

Africa Golf Estate turns into an indoor theatre because Fridays are fun days when 

they do family movie and pizza night. 

‘Alex loves to go to the park and we (mostly hubby) take him to a different park 

in the estate every weekend. Oh, and we would love to walk on the trails in our 

estate more often than we do. Does once count?’ she asked laughingly. 

As if life is not busy enough, she went on telling us she has recently discovered a 

passion for creating balloon sculptures and paper flowers. 

‘I love to make sure every occasion is beautiful. I also dabble in a bit of DIY and 

started my own YouTube channel – TanDIY.’ 

What does motherhood mean to you? 

‘I am so grateful for my boys, Brandon, Sean and Alex, and they really give my life 

meaning and joy. The most important thing for me about motherhood is that my 

children feel loved, seen and heard. 

‘My biggest piece of advice for mothers is to enjoy the little moments. When you 

are going through a tough time, just remember that it passes so quickly. You will 

miss that cry in a few years or your child nagging you for attention.’

Raceview’s Olia Voronkova is the true image of ‘challenge accepted’. 

As a young girl from Russia, she braved the US, where she met the love her life. We chat 

with Olia about motherhood, business and her six years in South Africa. 

She never knew that when she arrived in the US to work at a 

summer camp, her journey will bring her to South Africa. 

At the age of 19, she set off to work at a summer camp in 

New York, where she met Konrad, who came all the way from 

South Africa. 

‘We fell in love. One can truly say it was love at first sight. We 

went through the long-distance relationship and a break-up 

that lasted six years. After graduating from my university, I 

moved to New York, then Colorado, then Los Angeles and at 

that point, we decided to give it another try. 

‘Konrad visited me in LA. I took him to Las Vegas and we 

celebrated New Year’s in Big Bear in the snow. I then visited 

him here in Johannesburg and we travelled to Mozambique, 

Mauritius and Cape Town. 

‘It all felt like we never said good-bye those long six years ago, 

so we decided to give it another try. Konrad sold everything 

and moved in with me in Los Angeles. We stayed there for 

about two years, then I fell pregnant and we decided to move 

here, closer to his family.’ 

But not only did the long journey bring her to her new home, 

it also brought her to a place where she started a business in 

doing something she loves. 

For Olia, the past six years has been challenging but 

also exciting. 

‘I worked corporate for two years, but it wasn’t my thing. I 

then studied and started teaching Pilates, the type of Pilates 

I fell in love with in LA. It is hard core, large equipment Pilates 

that makes your heart race, makes you sweat and makes even 

your nerves tremble. 

‘I studied with second-generation master Pilates instructor 

Natasha Madel, who studied with one of the first disciples of 

Joseph Pilates - Romana. 

‘And here I am. Teaching Pilates full-time to my clients at a 

fully equipped boutique studio in Mulbarton.’ 

Finding her niche 

‘You know, I always loved fitness and having a healthy lifestyle. 

When I was 12, I used all my pocket money to buy this book 

that promised to help me ‘grow an extra 5cm. I’ve always 

been a shorty, so it bugged me a lot back in the day. 

‘I don’t know if those exercises actually helped, but since then 

I jumped on the fitness wagon and never stopped. 


Always up for a 


‘A few years back, I read that because of the obesity pandemic, 

children of today will be the first generation of children 

to not outlive their parents. It broke my heart. It’s up to us to 

change it. I want to show women they can lead a healthy life 

and show them how easy it is. 

‘We are our children’s role models, so if we are healthy, strong 

and independent, our children will want to be like us or 

even better.’ 

This all lead to her studying and getting new skills. Today, she 

is one of only 30 classical Pilates instructors in South Africa. 

‘I want to be the best in what I do, so I’m training for my master 

trainer certification with the International Sports Sciences 

Association.’ 

Once done, she will be able to do personal training, health 

and nutrition, as well as lifespan coaching, exercise therapy, 

performance enhancement, glute coaching ... to which 

she had to say: ‘Who doesn’t want a perky peach butt? I 

certainly do.’ 

All in a day’s work 

When asked about her daily routine, challenges and best 

part of her job, her face lights up and she is quick with her 

answers. 

‘LOL, I think that even after two years in this 

business, waking up at 4am remains my 

biggest challenge, especially as it becomes 

colder and darker, and yes, it is cold even for 

a Russian. 

‘But if we talk seriously, you know I have people 

coming to me with various issues like a 

back injury, knee injury, joint pain or mental 

problems. I wish I could just give them that 

magic pill that would eliminate their pain 

right away, but unfortunately, that pill doesn’t exist. It’s a journey 

and we need to be patient, be consistent. It might take 

a couple of months, it might take a year, but if we put our 

minds to it, we can achieve it and live a pain-free, healthy life.’ 

She describes her best moments as those when a client 

comes back to say, ‘Oli, my pain is gone. You are awesome. 

Thank you so much. 

‘But you know, it’s not me, it’s them. It’s their consistency, their 

dedication and their body. Your body is amazing. It can do so 

much more than you can imagine. 

‘Their words mean the world to me. They prove to me that 

I’m doing something important, something life-changing.’ 

Side hustles 

Olia and her partner, Roxanne, started Greenolicious, an online 

directory for small local businesses that later got another 

branch - a Health Cafe. 

But it happened during lockdown and they decided to focus 

online and now run greenolicious.com. 

‘We want to bring to our people here in the South affordable 

health foods. Pure and real that does not cost an arm and leg. 

‘Here, we teach about how living healthy is actually much 

more affordable that living unhealthy. 

‘I have another side hustle called BecomeMedia.co.za - a web 

design and brand-building agency. 

‘I help small business owners build a website and teach them 

how to manage it, help them put together their social media 

accounts, campaigns.’ 

Mummy duty 

‘I work from 6am and finish around 2pm, and then I’m on 

mummy-duty. I’m really blessed to be able to make my own 

schedule and spend more time with our little one, who goes 

to an Afrikaans primary school.’ 

Being a vegan, the evening dinners are healthy and includes 

veggies, grains and legumes. 

‘When my hubby comes home from work, being a proper 

South African, he braais and then we have dinner. This is also 

the time when we laugh together and talk about the day, 

new challenges and opportunities. 

‘To me, being a mum means to give our girl all the love, 

support and care we can, and teach her she can achieve 

anything she sets her mind on. 

‘Being so far away from Russia, it’s especially important to pass 

on the greatness of my Russian heritage - our rich culture, 

Pushkin, Lermontov, Dostoyevsky, Tchaikovsky, Mendeleev, 

Aivazovsky, our language, our music, our literature, art, science, 

the bravest hearts of our soldiers that gave their lives for 

our freedom and saved the world from the greatest evil, for 

our peaceful sky above our heads. To teach her that honesty, 

kindness, solidarity, tolerance and justice should be our 

North Star. 

On a personal note 

Your body is

you can imagine 

Olia grew up in a small town on the 

Volga River in Russia called Togliatti. Both 

her parents are retired and still live in her 

hometown, as does her older brother, 

Igor. 

‘My mum used to be a principal at two 

schools and my dad was a musician. He 

plays saxophone. But after the massive 

economic crisis in the early 90s when 

the Soviet Union collapsed, he gave up 

his passion and started working for an automobile plant to 

provide for us. 

‘The 90s were challenging for my parents. They had to sell so 

many things, including their wedding bands, to buy food and 

pay for necessities. 

‘I remember my mum used to tell me about that ugly green 

coat she wore. It was so old, worn out, dirt cheap and she was 

so embarrassed of it that she would be the first one at the 

school, where she worked as a teacher, and the last one to 

leave just so that no one would see it. 

‘I think those struggles made my parents who they are. 

Strong, gentle, humble and kind. My mum is a respected 

woman in my hometown. She has three bachelor degrees 

and was awarded an honorary title, Honored Teacher of the 

Russian Federation. 

‘I’m blessed to have such an amazing family, and I miss them 

a lot.’ 

About this and that 

Reading, especially when everyone is sleeping, and gardening 

are leisure time favourites for Olia. 

‘My hubby is building me a greenhouse. You know, Russians 

are farmers at heart. We love growing our own veggies, herbs, 

berries. I really want us to be as self-sufficient as we can.’ 

And when it comes to things to do and places she likes to 

visit, you soon realise the great outdoors is always calling. 

She loves Rietvlei for a Saturday morning run or mountain 

biking, Bass Lake for some swimming in clear water, 4x4-ing 

on the open grounds next to Swartkoppies or cruising in the 

boat on the Vaal River.

Chef Mynhardt Joubert knows the meaning of generous hospitality and 

foods of the gods ... cooking with love in his home and restaurant. He shared 

these recipes ... the ones we’d make for our mums this month. 

Frozen margaritas. Rock star West Coast oysters. Lavender and vanilla butter. Sweet potato 

gnocchi with salmon cream. If you’re looking for a meal to spoil your mum this May, say hello

Western Cape for the past five years, hosting dinners and using his home as a creative space and 

photographic studio. And this book, My Station Street Kitchen, is a reflection of his kitchen and 

the glorious meals that he creates. Mynhardt infuses everything he does with his enthusiasm,

For this hibiscus gin & tonic with 

cucumber, mint, berries and candy 

stripe beetroot, you’ll need 1 

cucumber, cut into ‘spaghetti’ strips 

or ribbons; 1 x 200g punnet any fresh 

berries (we like strawberries and 

blueberries); 2 medium candy stripe 

beetroots, rinsed and very thinly 

sliced; 200ml (8 tots) your favourite 

pink gin; 4 x 200ml bottles hibiscusflavoured 

tonic water; a handful of 

fresh mint, rinsed; and ice. 

To make, divide the cucumber, berries 

and beetroots into four gin glasses 

and fill with ice. Pour 50ml (2 tots) of 

gin in each glass and top up with the 

tonic water. Garnish each glass with 

mint and serve immediately.

Poppy seed cake 

“We fell in love with this cake from an early age and it has featured 

at all kinds of festive family occasions over the years. My sister 

and I have adapted the recipe from the original, doubling all the 

ingredients for a sizeable and deliciously moist cake. It is rich and 

filling and ideal to present at birthdays or any occasion catering for 

many. Allow for at least a day to stand as the flavour and density will 

improve – you won’t regret the wait.” Serves 8 - 10 

For the cake, you’ll need: 6 extra-large eggs; 630g castor sugar; 250ml 

canola oil; 500g double-thick plain yogurt; 150g poppy seeds; 160g 

desiccated coconut; 350g self-raising flour; edible fresh flowers to 

decorate; For the icing: 100g butter, softened; 400g crème fraîche; 

130g icing sugar; 10ml vanilla paste or extract; 400g good-quality 

white chocolate, melted 

To make: Preheat the oven to 180°C and line 2 well-greased 28cm 

loose-bottomed cake tins with baking paper, including up the sides. 

Cream the eggs and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the 

oil and yogurt and mix through. Add the poppy seeds, coconut and 

flour and mix thoroughly. Divide the batter between the prepared 

cake tins. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into 

the middle comes out clean. Turn out onto wire racks and leave to 

cool. Spread the icing in between each layer and stack the cakes, 

spreading the remaining icing on top. Decorate with fresh roses 

and/or other edible flowers. 

Icing: Cream the butter and crème fraîche together with an electric 

beater. Add the icing sugar and vanilla and whisk through. While 

whisking, pour in the melted chocolate and whisk until thickened. 

Store at room temperature if you are not using immediately.

overwatering • Bribe it with: patience, loose bark potting mix, 

indirect sunlight, humidity, scheduled watering. 

Maidenhair fern Tantrums about: not being able to watch you 

shower • Bribe it with: misting, dappled light, and humidity. 

Also, some time outdoors where it can see the sunset. 

Calathea Tantrums about: being the only child and open 

spaces • Bribe it with: bright, indirect sun, well-draining soil, 

lots of friends to increase humidity, and a shallow container 

(short-root syndrome). 

First-time plant parents 

When gifting or homing a plant as the first indoor offspring, go 

for these three easy greens that don’t always need to be the 

centre of attention. 

Snake plant May give glares when: irritated by too many water 

kisses • Give pocket money and: only one or two waterings 

during winter and almost any light condition. 

Spider plant May give glares when: it’s too hot to play inside 

• Give pocket money and: well-drained soil, indirect light, 

occasional pruning of playful spiderettes. 

Pothos (Epipremnum) May give glares when: grounded and 

unable to go anywhere Give pocket money and a hanging 

basket or trellis, a little pruning, and a chance to dry out 

between watering. 


Indoor growing guide 

Regardless of what you are planning to grow, here 

are some top tips for successfully raising your 

bundles of joy indoors. 

Adoption Buy plants and seedlings from a quality 

approved GCA Garden Centre, so you know your new 

babes have been given the best head start in life. 

Containers Always choose a container with many 

drainage holes, and don’t forget the saucer! Buying 

a small watering can with a long spout is also a 

great idea. 

Repotting Potted plants will eventually outgrow 

their containers. You’ll know it’s time to repot them 

when there is more root than soil left inside the pot. 

Upgrade your pot size, use fresh potting mix and a 

splash of fertiliser. Ask your garden centre assistant 

for help on which plant food and soil mix to use for 

your particular plant. 

Journaling To help organise feeding, watering and 

pruning times, begin a diary for your indoor plants 

where you can schedule your playdates properly. A 

journal will also help future babysitters and prevent 

them from accidentally doing damage to your hard 

work while you are away. 

Maintenance To keep your plant children looking 

and performing their best, use a damp cloth to 

remove any dust from the leaves. Dust prevents 

plants from absorbing adequate light and clogs 

their stomata – the holes which they need to 

breathe. In addition, deadheading spent blooms 

will encourage more flower power while pruning 

promotes lush regrowth. 

The benefits of plant babies 

Indoor gardening is a fabulous hobby! You could 

start an Instagram page to promote your plantparenthood 

journey and let the world celebrate 

those special growth milestones with you. In 

addition, gardening of all kinds promotes a 

connection with nature, increases happiness, 

improves air quality, and is really fun (and slightly 

addictive). From conversation starters to filling an 

empty nest, there’s always a reason to get a new 

plant. Remember to check the growing instructions 

of your new addition and make sure you can 

provide the perfect place for optimal growth.

To be honest, a tent, a canvas camp 

bed and a potjie just doesn’t appeal. 

The word camping brings us out in a 

rash. But then we heard about these 

Canvas Collective Africa Posh Tent

constructed of canvas and elegantly 

appointed ... so they’ll be perfect for 

adventurists and nature enthusiasts 

who relish camping but also 

appreciate a little pampering and 

don’t mind skipping the schlep work 

(hello ... did we hear our name?). 

When you step through the tent 

flap you’ll find a high-end haven - a 

two-sleeper complete with state-ofthe-art 

camping amenities (think an 

en-suite bathroom with a rain shower 

and even a private fancy flushing 

loo). The living area is intimate yet 

roomy and centered by a Queen-sized 

bed. Around the periphery, you’ll 

find handcrafted furniture, rugs, and 

freestanding lamps, all contributing 

a cosy and contemporary space. The 

tents have also been constructed 

to allow for plenty of head room. 

Outside, nature watching is the 

order of the day, best observed from 

comfortable outdoor loungers and 

deep cushions. 

Just as exciting, and enticing, is The 

Field Kitchen, South Africa’s first trulymobile 

fine-dining restaurant, which 

launched at the same time and is 

in the masterful hands of authentic 

food forager Greg Henderson. Chefin-residence 

Henderson, who has 

travelled extensively throughout 

Africa, draws from the diverse 

ecosystems and biomes of each 

location. Gastronomes can expect 

adventurous yet approachable dishes 

that will incorporate his veld finds 

and other hyper local ingredients, 

paired with nearby estate wines and 

locally distilled spirits. Set inside a 

mobile glass, steel and canvas cabin, 

The Field Kitchen has been designed 

as a bespoke moveable fine dining 

restaurant and open-plan food studio, 

so you’ll be privy to the creation of the 

foraged foods and ingredients as it’s 

transformed into delicious dishes. 

If you fancy this opportunity to go 

off grid without any compromise 

on comfort, gastronomy, and style, 

bookings are now open, and you can 

choose from three different locations 

for the remainder of this year. The 

launch camp is located on an idyllic 

tranche of farmland in Botrivier in 

the Overberg region and will be 

available to über campers until June 

30, then from July 7 to September 

30, it migrates to the fertile Biedouw 

Valley, just beyond Clanwilliam for 

the winter and spring seasons. This 

is flower season when the landscape 

becomes a magical palette of colour 

unique to South Africa. Later in the 

year - October 7 to December 15, it 

all moves over to the lesser known 

Witzenberg region, home to valleys 

of lush vines, orchards and majestic 

mountain ranges. 

Rates are R8000 per tent per night 

- with tents accommodating two 

people; a minimum of two nights 

booking is required, and the rate 

includes breakfast in bed, a delicious 

lunch picnic hamper, high tea in 

the veld, dinner and lastly, midnight 

snacks to enjoy under the stars. 

Also included are all non-alcoholic 

and alcoholic beverages (except 

international wines and spirits). 

Guests must be 18 years or older and 

no pets are permitted as the camps 

will be erected in nature reserves 

and farmlands.
