LUDGVAN SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 17.06.22

A word from the Principal...
Welcome,
Another busy two weeks since half term have been and gone and by the looks of the diary, things
are only going to be more exciting (and tiring!) from here on in!
Firstly, I would like to congratulate Lorna and the team at Oasis for achieving ‘Outstanding’ in their
recent Ofsted. We are very lucky to share our site with such excellent EYFS and after-school provision
and if you would like to read the report, it is available here: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/16/103172
In other excellent news, we are delighted to welcome back Mrs Martin-Laity who will be the Y4
teacher for the remainder of the year!
Last week, we were visited by a group of senior leaders from Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ schools in London
and Evesham. Both schools are considerably larger than us, with over 600 pupils each, but they
were all blown away by how well our children are able to articulate their learning and the huge impact
of our outdoor curriculum in developing skills that are then evident in the classroom. Well done
to all of our staff and children!
I’d like to say a huge thank you and well done to Jon, Gail and the rest of the team who worked so
incredibly hard to organise the Big Jubilee Celebration event on the community field. The range of
activities and events on offer was amazing and this was reflected by the fantastic engagement from
the whole local area. It was great to see and shows how lucky we are to be part of such a vibrant
community.
Finally, can I encourage you to send your children in to school with healthy snacks for breaktimes.
We don’t want to implement draconian measures around what the children can eat in school, but
sharing bags of crisps, bags of sweets etc are not appropriate as a snack.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend and the sun keeps shining!
Kind regards,
Adam Anderson
Principal

Mazey Day - Saturday 25th June at 1pm.
We would love the children to join us in this year’s parade, which is set to be the
biggest in a long time!
The theme this year is ‘Golowan goes back to the future’. From this, we have created
a large sculpture of a space rocket and lots of planets supporting it. The idea behind
this were the questions, ‘Where will travel take us in the future? Will we really
be regular travellers to space?’
If your children would like to join us on the day, please can they wear black to represent
the darkness of space and wear some head boppers (if they have them) and
face paint and glitter are always welcome! It would be great to blow some bubbles
as we go through the main street, so please bring a bottle of bubbles too! You can
meet us at the top of Morrab Road from 12.30pm, just look out for the Ludgvan
sign. Please can only ONE adult accompany each child, so that the children can be
seen in the parade.
Sports Day - Monday 4th July at 1pm
Please join us for our annual sports day afternoon, where our traditional sports day
races will take place on the Community Centre field.
The children will be carrying out sports throughout the morning in their team colours
to score some final points for their teams, ahead of the main event, in front of
Parents and Carers in the afternoon. The FLS will be supporting this event and will
be providing refreshments and a raffle. There will be an FLS non uniform day on
Friday 1st July. More details to come.
At the end of sports day this year there will be a few exciting surprises, so keep an
eye out on the FLS Parent page for more information!
We are aiming to finish by 3.20pm on this day.
Any questions about either of these events, please feel to ask your class teacher or
myself.
Thank you

Jubilee Celebration...

Outdoor Learning...
There has been a hive of activity within our outdoor learning sessions over the
past two weeks. Last week our year 6 pupils attended a day at the Royal Cornwall
Show - it was great to be able to get back to the show after Covid put a
stop to it. It was also great to be able to reinstate the much loved annual trip
for our year 6 pupils. Despite the rather wet conditions, we all had a fantastic
day being able to experience a wide range of agricultural events.
Our year 2 have been busy harvesting potatoes in our growing zone that will be
on our produce stall ready to sell. We’ve loved seeing how a small seed potato
has grown into a plant producing many more potatoes, especially as harvesting
them feels like a treasure hunt trying to find all the potatoes underground.
Year 4 have been busy on the farm, taking care of our animals, learning about
the needs of different animals and how we can meet them.
This week year 6 have been working on their map skills by completing an orienteering
challenge that involved a series of map skill tasks including grid references,
symbol identification and understanding contour lines. The children
worked well as a team and showed great resilience to complete some rather
difficult challenges!

Exciting and Engaging...
EYFS
At the start of last week, we enjoyed a whole day of Jubilee celebrations. We
made flags, had a picnic on the playground and watched some of the Trooping
the Colour. We loved watching the soldiers marching so we had a go at being
soldiers. We had lots of fun marching about on the field! To finish our celebrations,
we joined in with some team games and had a go at our very own relay!
Over the past two weeks in the early years, we have been learning all about
where we live. We’ve enjoyed listening to the story of ‘Soggy and the Giant’,
which made us interested in finding out more about St Michael’s Mount. We’ve
been busy building our own models of the Mount and giants using different materials.
We have drawn pictures of St Michael’s Mount and written a letter to Mr
Anderson asking him if we could go on a school trip to visit it - we can’t wait to
see what he says!

Exciting and Engaging...
Y1
Class 1 had great fun making lots of crafts for the Queens Jubilee celebration
and enjoyed the whole school picnic on the playground.
This half term in art we are consolidating the skills we have learnt over the
year. The children have been sketching, using different materials for collage
making and exploring mixing colours. They have produced some lovely work.
We have been learning about our amazing world and growing. The children had
to make their own miniature gardens. They had a selection of resources to use,
and they were extremely creative. They produced the most amazing gardens
and were very proud of their creations!

Exciting and Engaging...
Y2
Just before half term, Year 2 visited Helston Museum. During the visit, we all
got to dress up as Victorians. We experienced what a real Victorian classroom
would have been like, including the strict teacher and use of chalkboards. We
also got to look at lots of Victorian artefacts. It was great to hear all of the
discussions about what the artefacts could have been used for and the brilliant
questions that were asked. The trip was a fantastic way to finish off our Victorians
topic and the whole class were amazing ambassadors for our school.
Since returning from half term, Year 2 were extremely excited to find a strange
visitor in our writing corner. Beegu, a mysterious alien, turned up in our classroom.
Since then, we have read a book about her life story and the children
wrote excellent descriptions about her. Well done Year 2!

Exciting and Engaging...
Y3
Year 3 have had a fantastic residential trip, in glorious sunshine this week. They have
been to Carnyorth Activity Centre, where they explored our local mining history, on a
lovely 4 mile walk of the Carnyorth, Geevor and Botallack area. They also went kayaking
in Newlyn, with a sea swim and fun games. On their final day, they went rock
climbing and had a go at archery. There was also lots of laughter after dinner with
the obligatory ‘camp talent show’ and a trip to the park to end an amazing few days
away. Year 3, you were superstars!

Exciting and Engaging...
Y4
It’s been a productive start to the final half term for year 4. We have been continuing
our Farming topic exploring the different types of farming in the UK and what the role
of a farmer looks like at each type of farm.
Our maths learning has seen us move onto learning all about time - I’ve been so impressed
with everyone’s attitude to what is often a tricky subject. Everyone has put
all their effort into it and have demonstrated a great understanding of analogue time
and digital time in both the 12 and 24 hour format.
In music we have started learning about Samba, exploring the different instruments
and how they are played. We are looking forward to creating our own Samba music
next week!

Exciting and Engaging...
Y5
This week, Class 5 went to the Maritime Museum to support their learning about the
Vikings. They had a fantastic time and the staff at the Museum were very impressed
with their knowledge. The children took part in workshops before exploring the rest of
the museum.
In Science, we have been learning about soluble and insoluble materials, as well as
different methods of separating different mixtures and solutions. The children have
enjoyed getting their hands dirty and experimenting with these.
In Music, the children have been learning about musical theatre and, in groups, have
started creating their own musical theatre scenes, which they will be performing to
the class next week.
We have also been enjoying making the most of the lovely weather and getting out to
the field to play Rounders. We have been really impressed with the children’s sportsmanship
and team spirit! We’ve also continued to develop our athletics skills, last
week learning how to throw the discus! In World Views we have been learning about
humanism and have been discussing how the rules we live by.

Exciting and Engaging...
Y6
Year 6 have been studying a PSHE unit about Economic Wellbeing, which consisted
of learning about various aspects of money, the banking system and
exploring options for our future occupation choices. To end the unit, we were
visited by members of the Community Police, who allowed us to explore their
equipment, ask questions relating to their job and we even sat in a police vehicle
and sounded the siren.
Our computing unit is based on using a variety of skills to design and create
a product. We are using Microbits as a foundation for our designs and we are
currently tinkering with these in order to understand exactly what they are capable
of.
Our topic, “What inspires Someone to Become an Inspirational figure?” is in
full swing. During the Jubilee, year 6 looked at kings and queens within the
last century and created timelines to sequence these in chronological order. It
was interesting to learn about the Royal House name changes from centuries
before. Year 6 used their knowledge for drawing human figure, to create missing
sections of an image of the queen. It was a tricky task to ensure symmetry
was accurate. We have also created a news article relating to the historical
event of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which was inspired by Rosa Parks in the
mid-1900’s. We have deconstructed articles to identify their features and how
each of these features are used within a report.

Regular Giving
Campaign
Charity No: 1096193
“It has saved too many hours, days, months of anxiety to remember, and that
feeling of helplessness and hopelessness.”
"I must say I never thought I had so many essential and fairly essential things
to buy for myself (clothes / footwear) and the home until I had the money to
buy some of them! Without means, things just wear out / run out and never
get replaced and now my debts are paid off. It was just in time as they were
already spiralling out of control. Honestly you are brilliant. Thank you so
much..."
We helped Joss (Name changed to protect identity), who was struggling on a
very low income, claim a total of £8,745 in benefits back pay which she should
have been entitled to.
Help us to continue to support people like Joss across Cornwall, set up a regular
gift today and helping us to continue to provide free advice to everyone who
needs it.
Last year we helped almost 9,000 people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
writing-off debt worth over £1 million and gaining income worth over £8.1
