Two Men
of Taunton
is about a
revolution as it
happened.
Boston’s landscape then was much
different than today. Hills were cut to fill
its many coves, so most discussions of
the history of the city’s topographical
history are lost.
the peak initially reached almost 140
feet above sea level and was the city’s
dominant physical feature.
The Province House
mentioned was
built as a private
residence in 1679
and later became
the seat of the
royal governors of
Massachusetts. It
was demolished in
1922 when Olympia
Theaters acquired
the building and leveled it to make way
for a new theater. Its steps and a copper
weathervane are all that remain. The
weathervane was crafted by Shem
Drowne and installed atop the Province
House around the time the house was
later purchased for use as the official
residence of the provincial governors of
Massachusetts in 1716.

Most notable was the cutting down
of the three-peaked ridge (the
“Tremontane”) that once bisected the The Boston Stone, Boston,Massachusetts.
Shawmut Peninsula. Comprising Mt. Near —but not on— the Freedom
Vernon, Beacon Hill, and Pemberton Hill, Trail,and exists today inthe same spot.
