A JUNIOR women’s rugby team is the focus of a study on the relationship between impact and concussions. Lincoln University kinesiology and exercise science PhD student Nicole Spriggs is researching the impact of the collisions the Prebbleton under-17 team takes over a season. “Most of the research on collisions and concussions in rugby is male dominated and on elite athletes, even though research suggests that concussions are worst in females and youth players,” Spriggs said. “Additionally youth players’ brains have not fully developed, so seeing if repetitive sub-concussion impacts (head knocks not heavy enough to result in a concussion) affects their brain health is important.” HitIQ instrumented mouth guards, which contain three accelerometers and a gyroscope, will record the impacts the players have above an 8G (gravitational force) threshold. Spriggs is investigating whether the collisions affect brain structure by using MRI scans, and brain function through a cognitive test. “The hope is to see if subconcussive impacts across the season affect players as well as investigating if concussive impacts affect players’ brain function/structure. “I’m collecting data across the 2022 and 2023 season, from around 33 games and 81 trainings, so results would be expected in 2024.” Prebbleton’s senior girls’ SPORT 21 Junior women’s rugby team focus of concussion study Nicole Spriggs and the Prebbleton under-17 team Wednesday June 29 2022 Selwyn Times head coach Kevin Scovell said the club was keen to take part in the study. “We are looking forward to seeing how this progresses throughout the season and the results it could produce for the future of head knocks and concussions.” Spriggs is also part of a wider study with Canterbury University, which focuses on the usage of head gear to reduce impacts. The Waihora under-16 boys team is part of that research. “Hopefully we’ll get some interesting data where we can compare the boys and the girls,” she said. Lincoln prop Ryan Odering capped his 150th appearance by powering over against winless Rolleston while Richard Catherwood and Ryan Koning marked their 100th games for Darfield and Waihora respectively with a brace of five-pointers on Saturday. Waihora remain unbeaten in their quest for the Coleman Shield, beating West Melton 39-15, with No 8 Richard Catherwood Koning scoring the contest’s opening and final tries. The loose forward, who joined the club a decade ago after moving from Southland, was a member of the Coleman Shield and Luisetti Seeds Combined Cup-winning squads in 2014 and continues to be a key player. “Ryan’s the heart and soul of the team and he’s also the fun,” said Waihora head coach Ross Soper. “He’s the first to run off the field after training and have a beer and he’ll be one of the last ones to leave. A Ryan that’s enjoying himself is a Ryan that’s best for the team.” Soper’s counterpart Chris Fifeld credited Waihora but was also proud of a line-up including eight colts players due to injuries. “It shows the depth of that colt’s team we’ve got, that they can come up and play for us like that,” Fifield said. Soper was also impressed with the opposition. “They were very good, they had nothing to lose. We just didn’t click into gear but that’s full credit to West Melton for not allowing us,” he said. In the other Ellesmere fixture, Coleman Shield holders Southbridge were held to a 23-23 draw after trailing Springston 20-10 with 10 minutes remaining. Southbridge scored two unconverted tries and a penalty to take the lead but Springston fullback Conner Hamlin squared the ledger with a late penalty. The stalemate leaves Southbridge and Springston tied third in the standings just two points ahead of Prebbleton with three regular season rounds remaining.
