Selwyn Times Wednesday June 29 2022 18 RACING Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Injecting horse likely to result in ban • By Chris Barclay THE controversy-plagued Canterbury harness racing industry is poised to lose another up-and-coming trainer as Cam Jones awaits a ban for illegally injecting a horse hours before a race at Addington. Jones is the latest industry participant to face sanctions as the Racing Integrity Board strive to clean up the sport, after he eventually admitted breaching a Harness Racing New Zealand rule of racing last year. He will join another former Woodend Beach-based trainer Jesse Alford and disgraced Rangiora horseman Mitchell Kerr in exile after acknowledging he injected Johnny Nevits with a substance about 2-1/2 hours before it was due to start at Addington Raceway on December 10. Johnny Nevits was previously trained by Alford, who was disqualified for seven years in May 2021 for injecting the horse with formalin, a banned substance used to control bleeding. A month earlier Kerr was banned for life for selling a nonexistent horse and also charging insurance premiums for fictitious policies. Senior trainer Nigel McGrath was also disqualified for eight years in July 2020 for attempting to dope horses while Operation BREACH: Promising harness racing trainer Cam Jones is poised to be banned from the sport after injecting a horse shorty before it was to race at Addington. Inca, a National Organised Crime Group probe into corruption and drug use in the industry is also ongoing. Jones pleaded for leniency – a ban less than half the punishment sought by the RIB – when he appeared before a RIB penalty hearing. “I’d like to ask if you’d consider a period of 12 months disqualification … I’d like my story to be one of redemption,” he said. RIB adjudicator Professor Geoff Hall reserved his decision. The RIB wants a ban of not less than two years. After denying he breached a rule when investigators swooped on his stable, Jones admitted the charge in April. “When I was being interviewed I did lie, I knew when the truth came out it was going to be it for me for a while,” Jones said. Investigators witnessed Jones depositing an item subsequently identified as a hypodermic syringe into a wheelie bin at his stable, shortly before he loaded Johnny Nevits onto a float. Fellow trainer Andrew Fitzgerald told investigators he saw Jones with an empty syringe, but he had not seen him inject the horse. A RIB vet inspected Johnny Nevits at Addington and detected a 10mm soft swelling on the left jugular vein, consistent with an intravenous injection site. Injecting a horse with any substance on race day is prohibited; the maximum penalties are a $20,000 fine and/or being disqualified from holding a training licence for a period not exceeding five years. Johnny Nevits was scratched from the $10,950 race and was later retired due to a tendon issue. Urine and blood samples found no evidence of prohibited substances and the RIB was unaware what liquid was injected until the hearing, where Jones revealed he administered the product Flexadin in an attempt to calm Johnny Nevits before the race. “The horse was thought to have thyroid issues. Without it (Flexadin) he was quite a revvy sort of horse,” Jones said. “It was more (about) just trying to keep him in a good head space,” Jones said. Jones said the horse had Flexadin weekly for about two months, usually on a Tuesday. However, staff failed to administer the dose as scheduled so Jones, who had been absent for several days following the birth of his daughter, injected the horse on race day. “I wasn’t trying to get an edge. I was trying to save him being a hot sweaty mess so he’d run up to his ability, not add anything to him,” he said. A junior driver, who started training in September 2020, Jones has recorded 16 winners and 15 placings from 68 starts, earning $111,958 in stake money. He wound down his operation with a ban imminent, and said the solitary horse under his care would be moved within 24 hours of the penalty being imposed. • Industry criticised, page 21 Gotta light? They usually have light winds that disperse and reduce the spread of smoke. • Pile the debris: Small piles are better than one large one – they burn faster with less smoke. Remove as much dirt as possible from the debris before piling it. • Give it air: Make sure air can flow under the pile. It will burn hotter with less smoke. Remove any soot or ash that is upsetting airflow. • Finish burning before night-time: Cool temperatures make smoke sink and evening breezes take it to low-lying areas, creating a hazard and a nuisance.
