MY PRIDE AND JOY
Mud, sweat and gears …
and lots of dust!
If the thought of noise, dust, and the
adrenaline-packed action of custombuilt
cars going head to head over dirt,
mud or shingle on a course that offers
jumps, tight corners, and long straights
excites you, then the Canterbury Offroad
Racing Club (CORC) is the place for you.
CORC’s Amanda King thinks people are
interested and says, “I think it’s the noise,
the dirt and the passion of motorsport
and getting out and doing it!”
The home track is on Weedons Ross
Road and is a purpose-built clay-based
1.1km offroad track (short course). With
a well-known tabletop jump at the start of
the track, spectators can get great views of
Advanced
Advanced
big air jumps. But of course, tight corners
and long straights keep the racers’ minds
on the job where they must react quickly.
Anybody can be involved with the
club with nine classes of vehicles; there is
something for everyone. Entrants must
follow rule book specifications, including
the need for a roll cage, roof bracing,
special seats, 5-point harness and neck
braces. Safety is paramount.
Whether it’s the basic entry challenger
style, the Class 1 monsters with big
engines and big bodies or the popular
side-by-side like race model Can-Am
or Yamaha with heavy-duty suspension,
there’s fun and competition available.
Vehicles can range from tens to hundreds
of thousands of dollars in value. However,
fun can be had at any level, and Amanda
says that even at the entry level, people
can have “just as much fun as the big
boys in their hundred thousand dollar
vehicle.” There’s even a junior class
starting from five years of age! Currently,
there are 39 members, the youngest being
eight years old, while the oldest is in
their 70s. However, racing can’t happen
without the tireless and necessary work
of the volunteers who help with flag
marshalling, lap scoring, gear and safety
checks and numerous activities. Amanda
states, “We wouldn’t be able to race
without those people.”
Look out for Canterbury’s upcoming
iconic “Mainland Challenge” event at the
Weedon Ross Road track. It is a national
round held over two days on July 16-17.
DOING
WOF’s
The public is invited to the Saturday short
course racing. Entry costs $15 at the
gate, and under 15s are free. The track is
specially set up for spectators, with many
stands providing excellent views. Each
class has four heats over the day, and then
vehicles are classed by their fastest lap for
racing that continues Sunday. This racing
takes place in the adjoining forest behind
the track, where the road and forest are
closed, and competitors participate in a
250km enduro race.
If you are keen to learn more about
CORC or the opportunity to be involved
with a sport with heaps of atmosphere
and adrenaline, where vehicles don’t
mind a bit of a bash, sliding sideways or
enjoying the view from a big air jump,
