Is your cat
microchipped?
The new Selwyn District Council
by-law says that every person who
keeps cats that are over four months old
must have them microchipped and on
the New Zealand Companion Animals
Register (NZCAR) by July 1, 2022.
NZCAR is a nationwide animal registry
that is dedicated to reuniting companion
animals with their guardians as quickly
and easily as possible.
How to find out if your cat is
registered on NZCAR
If you know your cat’s microchip
number (this should appear on its
veterinary booklet), give your vet a call
or call NZCAR directly on 0508 567873
(0508 LOSTPET) or type in the number
on the register’s website.
If you are not sure if your
cat is registered, take it to
your local vet and ask them
to scan it for a microchip. If
it is microchipped, it will come
up with a number.
If your cat is not
microchipped, your vet will be
able to do this for a fee. You will
get given copies of the microchip
number for your reference. Ensure
Why microchip your cat?
Cats are notorious for wandering. If
your cat has become lost after moving
to a new house, separated from you
after a disaster, or hit by a car, being
microchipped is the easiest way to
reunite you with your favourite furry
friend. Microchipping also helps people
become responsible pet owners too.
Harness racing industry
criticised following
alleged sexual assault
• By Chris Barclay
A HARNESS racing lobby
group has criticised the
industry’s governing body
for failing to stand down
two trainers charged
with sexually assaulting a
female worker during New
Zealand Cup Week last
November.
The Harness Racing
Owners Federation wrote
to Harness Racing New
Zealand, the Racing
Integrity Board and
new Racing Minister
Kieran McAnulty last
week, frustrated the
men – who have interim
name suppression – were
still able to work in the
industry while criminal
charges were pending.
A Canterbury-based
trainer, 25, faces two
charges of indecent assault
and a third charge of
indecent assault allegedly
committed with a 29-yearold
man, whose case has
been transferred to the
Invercargill district court.
They are also jointly
charged with assaulting the
woman. All charges stem
from an alleged incident
on November 11.
Federation spokesman
Neil Bennett, a former
owner who was chair of
the now defunct New
Zealand Trotting Owners
Association, said HRNZ
should follow the example
of the Australian Rugby
League Commission,
which instituted a ‘no-fault
stand down policy’ in 2019
for NRL players facing
serious charges.
“It’s not a good look, it’s
shocking for the industry.
It’s an industry we love and
we’re seeing it decimated,”
Bennett said.
“There should be a stand
down policy when issues
like this arise. We want
them out of the game while
the issue is investigated.”
The letter stated: “What
signals are you sending to
the alleged victim and all
the women in the industry
with your lack of actions
around this sexual assault
case?
“It is just not good
enough to take no action
and just wait until the
court case is concluded
and not even address them
at all publicly.”
Bennett said he had
received an email from
RIB chief executive Mike
Clement, who told the
online-based group of
2500 member via email:
“In certain circumstances
it is open for HRNZ to
consider suspension of
licenses. This is a matter
for HRNZ.
“If the police had concerns
about the safety of
the victim pending disposition
of the charges, then
they would share those
concerns with the RIB/
HRNZ. I am not aware
that they have done so.”
Bennett was awaiting
a response from HRNZ
chief executive Gary
Woodham and McNulty,
who assumed the racing
portfolio from deputy
prime minister Grant
Robertson during a cabinet
reshuffle last week.
When approached by
The Star Woodham could
not confirm whether
HRNZ had a policy where
industry participants facing
criminal charges are
still able to work under the
presumption of innocence.
“As this case is via police,
we have limited knowledge
of information,” he said,
adding he did not know
the identity of the defendants.
“We have not been told
who the police are investigating,
and they have name
suppression.
“As far as the
complainant (is concerned)
HRNZ has reached out
via our legal counsel to
the police to offer any
assistance needed.”
