Care
summer
for your
hair
with Chris Moody of Moodyhair
It’s summer time and many
of us are looking forward to
basking in the sunshine. But
while we all know the dangers of
overexposure of sun on our skin,
did you know the same is true for
too much sun on our hair.
Just because our hair doesn’t have the same
sensitivity as our skin, doesn’t mean that it still
can’t get sunburn and so hair needs sunscreen
protection, too.
Exposure to a lot of sun plays havoc with our
hair and the fairer you are the worse it becomes.
Sunlight attacks the internal structure of hair
causing oxidation. The hair will start to become dry
and brittle as more moisture is lost, the ends of the
hair can start to fray and spit, and the UV light will
start to fade out the colour in hair.
This can be devastating for anyone who
has artificial colour in their hair. Dark browns will
become hollower and even look khaki, reds and
coppers will fade to orange, blondes can become
yellow, brassy or completely pale and translucent,
and that grey coverage will start to fade away
leaving all kinds of weird effects underneath!
The hair’s natural sun defence is a pigment
called melanin; the more you have the darker
your hair is. That means that brunettes have a
little more protection, while blondes and redheads
have much less. Regardless of your hair colour,
everyone should take steps to protect their hair in
the sun.
If you can, try to limit your hair’s exposure to
direct sunlight; hats and headscarves are the
obvious choice. If your hair is long enough, try to
wear it up in a French twist or pleat, that way you
minimise the hair that’s exposed. Another way to
style in the sun is to scrape it back and then tuck
the ponytail into a neat bun.
Consider buying a sunscreen for your hair while
you’re getting one for your skin. It will also help you
avoid that painful sunburnt parting line!
One of my favourites is L’Oreal Serie Expert
Solar Sublime UV Filter Spray (£12 for 125ml),
a very light liquid, leave-in sunscreen that can
be applied to wet or dry hair. It moisturises and
protects and is very lightweight, although those
with very fine hair will still notice the deposit in their
hair. Very similar is Wella SP System Professional
Care Sun UV Protection Spray (£12 for 125ml).
Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil is a little more
of an investment at £25 but the company has an
entire range of Sun Care and a strong reputation
for quality hair protection products.
Be aware that your hair will feel different with
these products in, but they will make a difference
to the condition and colour of your hair throughout
the summer holidays.
Whatever you do…rest, relax enjoy the sun and
look after that gorgeous hair.
