taste of the Deep
South in South
Yorkshire, head
to Conisbrough’s
Clucking Pig.
archaeology event where access
to the castle site is free all day. The
event looks at the castle’s older
history including its links to royalty,
the War of the Roses and Ivanhoe.
Acclaimed author Sharon Bennett-
Connolly will give a couple of talks
about the De Warenne family who
built and lived at the castle for
much of its history.
Reenactor group Escafeld
Medieval will be in the castle
bailey for their tournament and
archery displays. They will be
joined by local reenactors Infera
Peditum who are bringing living
history stalls for people to get a
hands-on experience of medieval
life. English Heritage volunteers
will also be providing themed
crafts and castle tours.
Bring along your garden finds
for the Portable Antiquities Scheme
to evaluate in the Finds Roadshow.
There will also be a handling
collection and activities based on
handling real archaeological finds.
For kids, there will be a ‘Have
a Go’ dig to try their hand at being
an archaeologist and unearth some
treasures. Sheffield archaeologists
The Time Travellers will also be at
the event to show some of their
finds and engage with visitors.
The free event takes place from
11am until 4pm. There is parking
in the village, as well as good
public transport links including
a train station on the Sheffield to
Doncaster route.
Run by the local

the new venture
opened in April
inspired by the
tastes and hospitality
experienced on their
travels across the southern states
of America.
With a pellet smoker imported
from the US, they are the only
smokehouse in Rotherham, giving

slow for up to eight hours to create

the unique Clucking Pig flavour.
You can also choose from one of
their homemade sauces, such as
spicy mayo, sweet BBQ sauce or
dare to try the whole annihilation
hot sauce.
But it’s not just about meat.
The team have also ramped up
their vegetable dishes with a
taste of the South. BBQ beans,
fried tatties and smoked veggies
are great on their own or as an
accompaniment.
