Some works of arts are so recognizable <strong>the</strong>y’re as familiar to us as our own faces <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mirror.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> likes of Leonardo da v<strong>in</strong>ci’s Mona Lisa to The Scream by Edvard Munch and V<strong>in</strong>cent Van<br />

Gogh’s The Starry Night, are all so firmly <strong>in</strong>gra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> popular culture that it’s easy to forget <strong>the</strong>se<br />

works of art can still have some secrets to spill. From <strong>the</strong> debate over whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re is actually<br />

an earr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> The Girl with a Pearl Earr<strong>in</strong>g’s ear, to <strong>the</strong> view from an asylum w<strong>in</strong>dow that’s worth<br />

'The Scream', Edvard Munch<br />

Norwegian artist Munch created his famous piece <strong>in</strong><br />

1893, a work which has come to symbolise <strong>the</strong> anxiety,<br />

trauma and isolation of <strong>the</strong> human condition. What is less<br />

known is that <strong>the</strong> figure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> foreground of <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

isn’t <strong>the</strong> one do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> scream<strong>in</strong>g. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

react<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> scream.<br />

'American Gothic', Grant Wood<br />

Grant’s work has suffered from mis<strong>in</strong>terpretation over<br />

<strong>the</strong> years, likely ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> dour looks on his subjects’<br />

faces. Despite <strong>the</strong> expressions of <strong>the</strong> pair, who are<br />

actually a fa<strong>the</strong>r and daughter, not man and wife, Grant<br />

had <strong>in</strong>tended <strong>the</strong> piece, created <strong>in</strong> 1930, to be a positive<br />

representation of rural American values <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face of <strong>the</strong><br />

Great Depression. Wood used his sister and his dentist as<br />

models for <strong>the</strong> portrait.<br />
