'Girl With a Pearl Earr<strong>in</strong>g',<br />

Johannes Vermeer<br />

The art world has long debated whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> girl <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g is actually wear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an earr<strong>in</strong>g, or whe<strong>the</strong>r it is simply<br />

reflected light, as close <strong>in</strong>spection shows<br />

<strong>the</strong> “earr<strong>in</strong>g” is not attached to her ear.<br />

Vermeer did not call his work ‘Girl with<br />

a Pearl Earr<strong>in</strong>g’, ra<strong>the</strong>r that became<br />

its official title <strong>in</strong> 1995, when <strong>the</strong> Royal<br />

Mauritshuis Gallery chose it for <strong>the</strong><br />

Vermeer exhibition <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton.<br />

'Mona Lisa', Leonardo Da<br />

V<strong>in</strong>ci<br />

Because her smile is so legendary, <strong>the</strong><br />

background to Da V<strong>in</strong>ci’s masterpiece<br />

is often overlooked, but has <strong>in</strong>spired as<br />

many arguments and debates as her<br />

enigmatic lips. Clearly asymmetrical, <strong>the</strong><br />

left side of <strong>the</strong> background is significantly<br />

lower than <strong>the</strong> right, and <strong>the</strong> landscape<br />

itself has been debated by art historians<br />

for centuries, as to whe<strong>the</strong>r it was real or<br />

from <strong>the</strong> artist’s imag<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

'The Starry Night', V<strong>in</strong>cent Van Gogh<br />

Pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> 1889, <strong>the</strong> scene <strong>in</strong> The Starry Night is <strong>the</strong> view from <strong>the</strong> Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Paul de<br />

Mausole asylum <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> Dutch pa<strong>in</strong>ter had voluntarily admitted himself to<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g his breakdown <strong>in</strong> December 1888, when he mutilated his left ear. The view<br />

is from <strong>the</strong> east-fac<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>dow of his room <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> French town of Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Remy-de-<br />

Provence, although <strong>the</strong> village is from <strong>the</strong> artist’s imag<strong>in</strong>ation. The brightest star <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

centre is Venus (The Morn<strong>in</strong>g Star) which was visible at <strong>the</strong> time.<br />

'The Weep<strong>in</strong>g Woman', Pablo<br />

Picasso<br />

Back <strong>in</strong> 1986, one of Picasso’s Weep<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Woman (<strong>the</strong>re are four version which <strong>the</strong><br />

artist pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> 1937), was stolen and<br />

went miss<strong>in</strong>g for three weeks before it<br />

was returned — but to this day, no one<br />

knows who took it. The piece was stolen<br />

from <strong>the</strong> National Gallery of Victoria <strong>in</strong><br />

Melbourne, The Weep<strong>in</strong>g Woman was<br />

recovered but <strong>the</strong> members of ACT have<br />

never been identified or found.<br />
