We absolutely love the name – and the concept behind – the newest
exhibition at The Gallery at The Studios at Lifestyle Centre Ballito.
Entitled 4Fs SAKES, the exhibition runs until 27 November and celebrates
southern Africa’s natural world of ‘fauna, flora, feathers and a touch of fur’
through the visual arts. The collaboration of over 30 artists presents visitors
with the magical power of nature, seen and experienced through the artists’
eyes, each using their own unique, creative gifts and presence. The Gallery
is open from 9am to 5pm daily. Details: @thegallerylifestyle, 072 245 8691
‘When women gather, great things happen.’ This year celebrating its 70th
birthday, the Christmas Country Fair has become one of the biggest of
its kind in the country. Supported by vendors and shoppers from across SA, the
Christmas Country Fair has grown into a beautiful showcase of South African
creatives, designers, makers, bakers, crafters, producers and foodies … and it’s
happening this month! Taking place between 24 and 26 November in the beautiful
gardens at Collisheen Estate just outside Ballito, this year’s ‘bright and beautiful’
event will feature over 140 vendors over three days and shoppers are encouraged
to bring their Christmas lists – and comfy shoes! There will be everything, from
unique gifts to handmade table and tree décor, Christmas cakes and fresh bakes,
stationary for the year ahead, clothes, toys, beauty products and so much more
on offer. A cashless event, you’ll need to bring your bank card (or Zapper). There is
also an exciting new element to this year’s fair – a Christmas workshop on Friday
25 November (tickets sold separately for this). The fair runs from 9am to 4pm
(Thursday), 9am to 6pm (Friday) and 8.30am to 2.30pm (Saturday) and tickets are
R70 (1 day), R100 (2 day) and R150 (family of four with two adults and two children
under 15). Book at: www.quicket.co.za. Details: www.thechristmasfairfund.co.za,
Book club
The best books and a brilliant boxed wine … November’s looking hot!
To save your child, you must open The Box.
An ordinary family. But it’s falling apart. The father’s
been accused of sexual assault, his house is being
picketed, his son won’t talk to him, and now his
daughter’s disappeared. Add to that, his DNA
is found on the body of a young woman and a
nationwide manhunt follows. Things aren’t looking
good. Is he a sexual predator? Or the victim of a
conspiracy? Dan Malakin says the answer’s in the
box. Viper • There’s never been an Eve Dallas thriller
we haven’t loved. Nora Roberts, writing as JD
Robb, has set Desperation in Death in New York
forty years in the future ... specifically in a place
called the Pleasure Academy ... a living nightmare
of a destination, where abducted young girls are
trapped, trained, and then auctioned off to the
highest bidder. It’s a little more disturbing than
most of her books - child trafficking, with fairly
explicit descriptions. Piatkus
Boxed wine ... it’s a good thing!
We’ve just come back from an island
holiday where we drank Pearly Bay every
night, and it’s really lovely. So, massive
excitement when we discovered that
they’ve launched a generous 3-litre box
version. Easy drinking, value for money,
environmentally friendly with sustainable
packaging, and perfect for outdoor living
and entertaining. A trio of delish options
... the crisp and refreshing Dry White (all
tropical fruit), a fruity and fresh Smooth
Red (with an abundance of berries) and a
Sweet Rosé (hints of strawberries, luscious
berries and fragrant rose petals). Around
R129.99 a box from your local bottle
stores. Details: Pearly Bay Wines on Facebook
New on the bookshelves
If you knew how the love story ended, would you turn the first page? In Molly
James’ Skip to the End, Anna knows, from the first moment she kisses someone,
how the relationship will end. And there appears to be many, many unhappy
endings. Until, at a wedding, she drunkenly kisses three men. And one ... he’s
THE ONE! Small prob. She can’t remember which it is. Great fun ... a proper beach
read for the upcoming hols. Quercus • Sticking with love. In Holly Williams’ brilliant
debut, What Time is Love, a couple meet and fall in love in 1947. And 1967. And
1987. And each time they meet, they’re 20. What if, they need to ask themselves,
they’ve met the right person, but at the wrong time? A wonderful love story,
and a clever look at the changing world. Orion • Time to up the tension. Murder,
it appears, hides behind closed doors. In a luxurious care home, an heiress of an
immense family fortune knows about the horrors that happened in her family
home. And when the body of a young girl - decomposed and obviously starved -
is found on the grounds of the now derelict house, secrets are going to come to
the surface. Not without dangers to all involved. Lynda La Plante’s Dark Rooms
is the latest Tennison thriller. Zaffre • Kathy Reichs opens Cold Cold Bones with
Dr Temperance Brennan finding a box on her porch ... inside is a fresh human
eyeball with GPS coordinates etched into it. Well .. you know the rest’s going to
be macabre and gripping ... particularly when Kathy’s daughter Katy disappears.
It’s an up-all-nighter! Simon and Schuster • Oh my ... and up all night you’ll be, too,
with My Other Husband. Dorothy Koomson writes terrific psychological thrillers
... in this one, a best-selling novelist turned successful scriptwriter is ditching
everything, including her career and her husband, before her past catches up
with her. But when it looks like she’s trying to be framed for murder, it appears
she may have left it too late. Headline Review • Lisa Jewell doesn’t do sequels.
But in the case of the fabulously creepy The Family Upstairs, readers begged to
know ... what happened next? The Family Remains, which kicks off completely
unrelated, but then quickly ties in with the previous story - 30 years earlier - when
three people are found dead in a kitchen, while upstairs a baby cries. If you
haven’t read the first book, do so, if you have ... you know you’re going to smash
through this one. Century.
A P&T for summer
This summer, we’ll be drinking portstyled
drinks. Port-style? In Summer?
Isn’t that a winter choice for old men?
Nope ... not anymore. The new De
Krans Premium P&T is a port-style
and tonic cocktail, which puts all those
old-fashioned ideas to shame. It’s a
drink that tells the story of love and
innovation. Love ... because the De
Krans team do love their port-style
wines. And innovation ... to encourage
the younger generation - those who
love cocktails and ready-to-drink
beverages, to try port-style drinks. This
sparkling, naturally sweet, premixed
drink, with 6 per cent alcohol,
boasts fresh flavours of passion fruit,
pineapple, peaches and citrus, with
the iconic and familiar bitterness of
the tonic flavour on the aftertaste. It’s
all natural flavourings, comes in a nifty
275ml bottle and should be served
super chilled. We love it (oh .. and
those elderly port-style drinking chaps
... they will too!). You’ll find it in fourbottle
Summer Wine Must Haves
Nothing says summer quite like watching the sun set with a perfectly chilled glass of your
favourite wine in hand. So much more than just a liquor store, experts at TOPS Lifestyle are
ready and waiting to offer their advice as you start topping up your summer wine collection!
Longridge Ekliptika
Serious, dark and concentrated
in colour, this wine greets you on
the nose with aromas of ripe red
fruits, plums and pencil shavings
which follow through onto the
palate with chewy black cherries,
sweet spices and well balanced
grippy tannins on the mid palate.
The wine ends with a lingering
umami finish.
GROOTE POST SEASALTER.
An established, award-winning pedigree. The
Seasalter is an intense Sauvignon blanc and
Semillon blend (10%) displaying typical Darling
minerality and soft nuances of citrus, stonefruit
and green apple. 50% of this wine was aged in
French Oak barrels while the other half remained
on the lease in tanks. The Sea Salter’s balanced
acidity will allow ageing for a good few years.
KEN FORESTER SILVER ROSE
Taking inspiration from French counterparts in
Provence, France, where they have pioneered the
production of the world’s most renowned and
coveted Rose style wines, Ken Forrester set out
to make a South African version of this wine that
gave birth to the Silver Rose.... South Africa’s most
premium rose style wine made from Grenache
Noir. A delightful, softly pink, elegant, fruit focused
wine, made from 100% hand-harvested Grenache,
with structure and body and a long finish on the
palate.
North Coast Mrs SA finalists are sharing
Three musts for a night out? Great hair, great lashes
and wear something that makes you feel on top of the
world!
Something you always have in your bag? Lipstick
and a phone for photos for the memory bank!
Your personal ‘style’? Simple, yet elegant.
Biggest fashion no-no? As Coco Chanel would say,
“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous”. My
fashion no-no is revealing too much and not being
classy.
Three musts for a night out? Clean hair. You
can’t feel your best if your hair doesn’t look
good. A good at-home facial before going out if
you have the time. Your favourite pair of heels -
especially a pair you can dance in if the evening
goes that way!
Something you always have in your bag?
Cellphone, lip gloss and chewing gum.
Your personal ‘style’? I dress according to how
I feel. I’m maybe a bit ‘extra’ by Ballito standards
because I love beautiful clothes and a pair of
wedges or heels, but I’m also comfy in a greatfitting
pair of jeans and tee.
Biggest fashion no-no? I believe fashion is a
form of self-expression and everyone should
boldly wear what makes them feel good. For
me, though, I stick to the ‘one loose, one tight’
principle for an outfit (if the pants are loose, the
top is tight and vice-versa).
Your favourite North Coast cocktail spot? For
cocktails it has to be Conchilla and my dinner
favourites are 45 On Eat Street and Fiamma Grill.
Dreaming big
Despite challenges that life has dealt her, ambitious
and determined Mount Edgecombe Miss India SA
finalist, Michaiah Naidoo, is driven by a desire to
become an ambassador for goodwill and showcase
the diversity of her culture.
Radio presenter and producer, student
and avid animal-lover, Michaiah dreams
of one day becoming a successful
television journalist and actress. Right
now though, her focus is set on being
crowned the ZEE TV Miss India SA 2022
winner in December this year. She is
currently one of the top 25 finalists and
is working hard to achieve her goal. We
found out more about this ambitious
young woman.
1. Tell us a bit about your
background and childhood.
I was born and bred in beautiful
Durban and have lived in Pinetown
and Hillcrest. I lived in close proximity
to polo pony horse stables (which
instilled my love for animals and
equestrianism). We relocated to Mount
Edgecombe in 2013, and I began my
high school career at Crawford College
La Lucia. Attending Crawford was an
exquisite experience and it was during
this time that my love for theatre and
performance grew. I excelled in drama,
played piano and became proficient
in French. I also played soccer and
hockey and painted. Growing up in a
slightly dysfunctional home (I witnessed
many feuds, outbreaks of domestic
violence and verbal abuse between my
parents), caused me struggling to speak
coherently and stuttering when I was
younger. I later discovered that children
often stutter as a result of childhood
trauma. I'm proud to say, though, that I
no longer stutter and am not a victim of
my circumstance, but rather a warrior. I
believe those battles helped make me
the person and woman of strength that
I am today.
2. Tell us about your career and
studies.
I’m a radio presenter and producer on
103.3FM. I started my broadcasting
career at the age of 20 and, as of
October, I will join local Bollywood
station Hindvani, which I’m extremely
excited about. I’m currently completing
my degree in media studies and
communications with the hope of
becoming a television journalist. I’ve
been trained under the guidance of
renowned SABC TV news anchor and
journalist, Mahendra Raghunath and
dream of following in his footsteps.
3. What has your Miss India SA
journey been like, thus far?
I entered Miss India SA in June. It’s
always been my dream to participate in
this pageant and this year I took
20 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga November 2022

the leap of faith and entered. I want to be an ambassador
for goodwill and showcase the diversity of my culture, as
well as hopefully use my platform as a finalist to positively
impact the community through philanthropic deeds. Thus
far, I have completed two charitable campaigns, a Mandela
Day SPCA food drive and a Women’s Day campaign for
an old age home. It has been an amazing journey thus
far and I’m grateful to have met such dynamic and caring
individuals. The sisterhood formed between contestants is
an unbreakable bond and I’m blessed to be surrounded by
beautiful, intelligent women who share similar core values
as me. I'm also grateful for my photographer, Yashveer
Boodhoo, for his exceptional work and attention to detail.
4. What is your goal, should you be crowned ZEE TV Miss
India SA?
I want to continue hosting charity events and grow the
brand by mentoring future contestants. I'd like to use the
title to uplift others, lead and direct the youth towards
developing themselves as individuals and utilising their
talents to create an income stream to lessen the current
unemployment crisis in our country. I'd love to represent the
Miss India SA brand internationally and, hopefully, achieve
my dream of becoming a Bollywood actress.
5. Who do you look up to and why?
Two special ladies who I admire are Preetha and Kamisha
Nanhoo (pageant organisers) for their constant support and
guidance. They've made my Miss India SA journey thus far a
memorable one and without them none of this would have
been possible. I want to thank them for creating a platform
that empowers, inspires and uplifts women of all races and
cultural backgrounds. I’d also like to thank Tracy Maharaj and
Kimberly Govender, both of whom work with the pageant.
Keeping them safe
After the second round of devastating flooding in KZN, Ballito student, eco-activist
and animal lover Milan Comley reached out on social media in an attempt to help
two litters of puppies who were at risk of drowning. That was the beginning of SAFE
– a dog fostering, adoption and education non-profit organisation (NPO).
“We can no longer 'adopt' the problem
away. There are far too many puppies
and dogs needing homes. Rescue
centres are full and funding and support
have dwindled.”
It was this realisation, says Milan,
that she and SAFE co-founders Claire
Augustyn and Kerry Janke came to
when they were in the process of
founding the NPO. “We sat down and
looked at the overwhelming statistics
and the reality of the unprecedented
numbers of unwanted, abandoned and
abused puppies and dogs in KZN at
present.”
They identified three key challenges:
lack of sterilisation, education about
the care, treatment and medical
requirements of animal ownership,
and poverty and job security. “We
then looked at how we could take
responsibility for these areas to bring
change.”
Milan, a 22-year-old Masters student
in sustainability, is currently interning
at a local clothing factory in the
sustainability department. Having
always been an eco-activist and animal
lover, she says she is continually trying
to create value for humans, animals and
the environment wherever she sees a
gap.
“All three of us, though, have stories
going back to our childhoods,
illustrating our natural instinct to help
those in distress. Taking responsibility to
see a life changed comes naturally to all
three of us, it seems,” she says.
The overriding philosophy at SAFE is
that people need to take responsibility
for the change that they want to see.
And, it seems, that is exactly what
its directors, members, fosters and
volunteers are hard at work doing.
So, what exactly do they do?
There are three pillars to the SAFE
SAFE co-founders Milan,
Claire and Kerry
network. Pillar one is the 'on the
ground' programmes – including a
'betterment programme' (improving
a dog's life where it currently is) and
mass sterilisation and vaccinations
programmes. Pillars two and three
are 'off-shoots' of this programme
and include a foster programme and
an adoption programme. “The foster
network comprises a group of ordinary
households who, for various reasons,
opt to open their hearts and homes
to puppies and dogs that need to be
uplifted and placed in a loving home
environment while a permanent solution
is found for them. This type of fostering
is a temporary bridge between a dog’s
horrendous past and a beautiful future,”
says Milan.
They also have a wonderful 'companion
programme', which offers a permanent
foster solution, providing older dogs
that have been identified and trained for
senior members of the community.
The final pillar is the adoption
programme. “The obvious conclusion in
the chain is to find the correct homes to
match the dogs and pups being cared
for through our SAFE foster network. This
is done with strict criteria.”
How can you help?
“We believe that everybody has
something to offer, be it a skill, a secondhand
item, their time or a financial
resource. Not everybody is passionate
about or suited to directly work with an
animal, but they can be a vital part of the
chain of change,” says Milan. SAFE has
various lists available for those interested
in becoming involved, including a needs
list, a partner and volunteer list, foster
and adoption and banking and donation
information. Contact them to find out
how you can become involved.
Di giving her
husband Mark his
first pottery lesson.
When last did you take a moment to
be truly present in the moment and
allow yourself to tap into your inner
creativity? Hosted at the exquisite
Umdloti home of potter Di Smith, Clay
Connection workshops encourage
you to do exactly this.
Each day-long retreat begins with
a beautiful tea ceremony on arrival,
where participants are invited to
choose a handmade clay teacup and
a symbol that resonates with them,
before being served ayervedic tea
while seated in a circle on the grass.
“This is the first of many mindfulness
practices we do throughout the day,”
says Di, who started the workshops
because, she says, we need more
mindfulness and creativity in the
world.
Having lived in Umdloti for more than
30 years, Di's journey with pottery has
been an interesting one. “I took up
pottery classes many years ago, and
immediately fell in love with it. I kept
challenging the 'norm' of what could
be done with pottery. I decided to open
my own studio about 15 years ago.”
Di converted a room in her home into
a studio and started supplying pottery
to local decor shops and doing
commissions for interior decorators. “It
became quite stressful though, and I
found my creativity starting to wane.”
When she and her husband moved
into their new home, Di decided
it was time for a complete career
change. She began selling high-end
real estate in Umdloti 10 years ago.
Like so many people, when
lockdown hit Di found herself with
an opportunity to slow down and
once again tap into her creative
side. “I hadn't touched clay for many
years and when I got my hands on
a piece, I started making a sculpture
for one of my daughters who was
stuck overseas and going through a
very difficult patch in her life. It was
incredibly therapeutic for me, but it
also stimulated my creativity again.”
While she has many interests and
hobbies, Di says she came up with
the Clay Connection concept after a
friend introduced her to the Japanese
concept of 'ikigai', which means 'your
reason for being'.
“It's about discovering what brings you
joy and inspires you, what is good and
needed in the world and what you can
make a living from. I believe the world
needs more time to slow down, and
more opportunities to be creative.”
With her home as her sanctuary, Di
decided to run her pottery retreats
from there. “I had to get my husband,
who is a very private person, on
board, so I decided to do a mock
workshop with him – including all the
elements, from the tea ceremony to
the meditation and pottery. After he
saw how passionate I was about it, it
was decided.” Since then, Di's retreats
have taken off and she is already fully
booked until next year!
While the goal is for each person to
go home with a beautiful piece of
pottery that they love, Di's workshops
are about the experience and the
journey you go on throughout the
day more than about the pieces
that you make. “The clay teaches
us lessons and we take moments
throughout the day to find stillness
and connection.” Each class has a
different theme, such as 'Finding Your
Inner Zen Through the Art of Clay'
and 'Finding Your Divine Femininity
Through the Art of Clay'. She also runs
a couple's retreat.
You don't need to have any
experience or be 'arty' to do one
of these and, Di says, the process
throughout the day encourages you
to tap into your intuition and find that
innate creativity we all possess. “It's
incredible to see people letting go
and letting their imaginations go wild.
I've seen some incredible creations
come out of our workshops and some
people have really struggled. There
are often lots of emotions that come
out, as well.”
Di practices yoga daily and has
completed an online mindfulness
course. “I surround myself with lots
of 'gurus' and I hope that through
my retreats, I can share some of the
wisdom I have been lucky enough to
get from them, along with my pottery
experience, with others.
Clay Connection retreats are ideal for
groups of friends, bridal showers and
book clubs. They are run on a Saturday
from morning to late afternoon and
all the pottery is handmade. The cost
is R1200 per person, which includes
tea, coffee, mimosas and lunch – as
well as your pieces made on the day.
She can host a maximum of seven
people at a time.
Candice Jenkinson
Being 'in flow' means you are in
the ultimate state of being. You are
present, immersed, energised and
happy. You are ‘in the zone'.
FLOW The Studio founder, Candice
Jenkinson, has for many years dreamt
of creating a space where people can
find their way to this state of being.
Now her dream has become a reality.
The studio opened just a few months
ago and is based at The Maker's Yard
in Umhlali.
Essentially, it is a co-working space
where various teachers, instructors
and healers can grow their practices
without the usual concerns (like big
overheads) that come with starting
and running a small business.
It is a wonderful space for people
to experiment with and experience
various types of mindful exercises and
movement and create meaningful
connections.
Candice, together with her husband
Jeff, a software developer, came up
with an app-based system that allows
you (through one membership) to
choose how many and which classes
you'd like to go to. You can do pilates,
yoga or dance in group or private
classes. It's all up to you.
Formerly in advertising and marketing,
Candice (a mom of two boys) made
the decision to leave the corporate
world and follow her bliss after doing
her yoga teacher training online
course during the Covid lockdown.
She first discovered yoga, she says,
on a beach in Tanzania when she was
just 15 years old. It resonated with
her straight away. “It was magical. The
instructor was from India and we were
in this beautiful, serene place. I felt the
gravity of it immediately and knew I
needed more of this in my life.”
After working in the corporate space
in both Johannesburg and KZN,
Candice says she started realising
that she wanted to share both her
business and management skills and
her passion for yoga, but wasn't quite
sure how. “I didn't want to buy or
open a typical yoga studio. I wanted
to find a way to carry my knowledge
forward, while at the same time
growing others and giving back to the
community.”
Jeff, a natural entrepreneur and 'maker
of things', has always pushed Candice
to think outside of the box.
“When I came up with this concept
and showed him the space at The
Maker's Yard, he said yes immediately.”
While Candice does teach yoga
classes herself, her range of instructors
and teachers offer various forms of
yoga, pilates and dance classes within
their specialised fields.
“I decided that I would take on the
financial risk and overheads and find
a way to empower and allow teachers
the opportunity to do what they do
best - and compensate them fairly
- while they are still busy building
their businesses and learning about
what that takes. Teachers and healers
often don't reach their full potential
because they are desperately trying to
cover costs and don't have someone
backing them.”
So, what's on offer at FLOW?
Dance, pilates, various styles of yoga
(including vinyasa, yin, yin yang, yoga
nidra and kundalini yoga), breathwork
and meditation workshops, reiki and
sound healing workshops, teacher
training. They also offer venue hire,
corporate wellness programmes and
wellness events.
Holidays, fun …
& diabetes?
The festive season is about being with family and celebrating life! But excessive overindulging can have
serious consequences. It’s Diabetes Awareness Month and we asked North Coast specialist endocrinologist
Dr Tanya van der Made to share a bit about managing our weight while still enjoying the season.
1. Don’t ignore the signs or put off a medical check-up if
you feel unwell.
2. Your weight matters, but don’t beat yourself up about
it. Discuss weight issues with your doctor. Body mass index
(BMI) is a quick guide to indicate if you are overweight but
we also look at your muscle mass versus fat mass. We can’t
rely on BMI alone and certain types of fat (and where it is
deposited in your body) is more telling.
We can help with appetite control,
which often is a biological drive from
the hypothalamus (part of your brain)
and not your fault.
3. Diabetes does not happen
overnight. Type 2 diabetes runs in
families and if anyone in your family
has type 2 diabetes, you are at risk. It
happens slowly over time and is usually
with associated weight gain. Type 1
diabetes is very different. As an autoimmune disease it can
happen very quickly with weight loss and lead to a diabetic
ketoacidosis (DKA).
Go for a walk on
the beach with your
family!
4. Stop drinking sugary, fizzy drinks. They do not hydrate
you. In fact, they can dehydrate you through a process of
osmotic diuresis and make you feel thirstier. If you want a
fizzy drink, opt for the sugar-free or diet version, but water or
flavoured water is still best.
5. Diets and exercise. Seeing a good dietician is important
as everything relies on what is going in. Dieticians should
not give the same diet to every
patient, as every person is different.
The consensus, though, is that the
Mediterranean diet is best and people
who exercise three times a week have
better outcomes. Go for a walk on the
beach with the family - you don’t need
a gym! Enjoy Greek take-out instead
of burgers for a change. Learn to read
food labels!
6. Your doctor matters. You should
have an ongoing relationship with your doctor when it
comes to diabetes and pre-diabetes because it is a chronic
condition. However, medicine and research are not static, so
30 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga November 2022

you should not be on the same medication
for years and years. If you have diabetes,
we need to monitor outcomes from your
glucose diary to clinical signs of target organ
damage in the eyes, kidneys and heart, all
the way to your feet.
7. Life is short. Don’t use this as an excuse
to smoke and live unhealthily! Value every
day by doing your best, one day at a time.
Love your family and respect the pain they
would feel if you were to get sick.
MEET DR VAN DER MADE
from Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg
Hospital in the Western Cape. Currently
working in private practice for the last
two years in the Ballito and Umhlanga
area. She is a mom of two boys and two
rescued fur babies. “I am not a dietician and
I can't manage diabetes in isolation. I rely
on a multi-disciplinary team of dieticians,
ophthalmologists, neurologists, cardiologists
and nephrologists, especially when patients
have developed complications. First prize
for me though is to prevent diabetes and
my love for endocrinology stems from the
fact that it can prevent pain and suffering in
many cases.”
Padel up!
The latest (and some would say greatest) sporting trend to hit the North Coast is a
family-friendly racquet game called padel. We caught up with Marcus Rivera,
co-owner of the newly-opened North Coast court, Padel Station, situated at Sugar
Village in Umhlali.
32 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga November 2022

Fanele, Ndumiso and Blessing
are ready and waiting to get
you on the courts!
While it might be new to most of us, the game of padel has
been around for a while.
Having started in Mexico in the 1960s, it is basically a
fun combination of tennis and squash, usually played in
doubles. Having grown steadily in popularity around the
world and South Africa (various padel courts have sprouted
up in the Cape and Gauteng), padel is now set to be an
Olympic sport in 2024.
Thanks to Marcus and his business partners Guy Bower and
Andre Jooste, we now have our very own public courts
right here on the North Coast (the first in KZN), and they are
already very popular!
“Our membership numbers doubled after the first month,
and we have more than 600 members and are growing
daily,” says Marcus, who also manages the Sugar Village
property.
Played in 75 countries around the world, Marcus says
padel basically combines the best elements of tennis and
squash into one game. What makes it so popular, it seems,
is its simplicity and the fact that it's easy to learn and
uncomplicated to play.
“It's great because you can have longer rallies and the ball
is softer and easier off the bat. You don't have to smash the
ball and you don't have the 'downer' of it flying past you. It's
such a great game to play as a family.”
While it might be easy to play, padel still offers a really great
workout and there are technical elements involved too,
which means you can improve on your skill the more you
practice. A padel racquet is smaller in size than a tennis
racquet and there are different shapes for different types of
players. The court (there are two at Padel Station) is about
thirty per cent smaller than a tennis court and the ball is
also slightly different. It looks like a tennis ball, but is a few
centimetres smaller and has a higher pressure, which means
it bounces differently.
Marcus (who is currently doing a coaching accreditation
course), says he and his partners have really enjoyed setting
up Padel Station in Umhlali, and the response from the
community has been fantastic.
The on-site pro shop is fully stocked with racquets which
are available for hire and balls (which you buy and keep),
and there are plans in place to add to the existing facilities,
which include a restaurant and jungle gym, water feature for
the kids and possibly other sport facilities as well.
“We are available for venue hire for private functions and
parties and can accommodate around 50 to 60 people. This
is a great option for year-end functions or get-togethers
with friends and family. We really want this to be a familyfriendly
sports venue where people spend time outdoors,
being active and socialising.”
The cost of hiring a court for non-members is R400 during
peak times and R320 off-peak. Members receive a 50% fee
discount and memberships (which can be bought online)
begin from R1 950 per year for a single to R3 950 for a family
of four. Hiring a racquet costs R50 and a can of balls R140
(which can be re-pressurised when needed).
Former professional tennis player and Salt Rock
businessman, Matt Conningham, is one of the many North
Coasters who now find themselves spending a significant
amount of time on the padel courts in Umhlali. “It really is
so much fun. I honestly think anyone can do it. If you can
play 'beach bat' you can play padel! You work up a great
sweat and because it's doubles, it's really fun and social. If
you find players of a similar 'calibre' as you it gets even more
interesting, as there are technical elements and you do get
better with time.”
LINE FISH CEVICHE
With citrus, litchi and elderflower flavours
culminating in a crisp finish, the Spier Good
Natured Organic Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect
match for the ceviche’s beguiling layers of
acidity.
(Serves 4 as a starter)
You'll need: 500g fresh, sustainably caught line
fish fillets, pin-boned (we used sea bass); Juice
of 2 limes; Juice of 1 lemon; Salt to taste; 1 to
2 ripe grapefruit, sliced into fine segments;
About a third of a cup cucumber, finely diced;
15ml to 30ml extra virgin olive oil; Handful fresh
coriander, roughly chopped; Salt and pepper.
For the avocado puree: 1 ripe avocado; Juice of a
medium lemon; Salt and pepper.
For the citrus pickled red onion: Juice of 1 lime;
Juice of 1 lemon; Juice of 1 grapefruit; 15ml
sugar 1 red onion, finely sliced.
To make: Use a long-bladed, very sharp knife to
slice the fish into thin slivers, arranging them in
a wide bowl. Pour the lime and lemon juice all
over, season lightly with salt, cover and leave to
cure for 15 to 20 minutes or until the flesh has
just turned white. Pour off excess juice. Set aside
(covered, refrigerated) while you get the other
elements ready for plating.
While the fish is curing, make the avo puree: In
a blender add the avocado (discard skin and
stone), lemon juice and season lightly with salt
and pepper. Blend to a smooth puree, then
transfer to a piping bag. Set aside until ready to
plate. (If you’d rather serve sliced avo instead of a
puree, feel free to do so.)
For the citrus pickled red onion: Place all the
ingredients in a glass jar and shake gently to mix.
Refrigerate until ready to serve, at least 2 hours
or overnight.
To serve: Arrange the slices of ceviche on
a serving platter, then top with grapefruit
segments and diced cucumber. Pipe the
avocado all over, then top with some pickled
red onion, coriander leaves and a sprinkle of salt
and pepper. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and
serve at once.

Ocean Basket Ballito
it’s officially been five years since
Ballito’s flagship Ocean Basket first
opened its doors in the once derelict
Big Blue Building in the Ballito
village. We’re raising a glass this
month to toast this local, familyowned
success story.
You’d be excused for thinking
you’d walked into some dreamy
Mediterranean bolt hole on your
first visit to Ocean Basket Ballito,
overlooking Salmon Bay. With over
300 Ocean Basket stores worldwide,
including idyllic Cyprus and Malta, it’s
truly saying something to rate Ballito’s
very own Ocean Basket restaurant as
one of the most picturesque in the
world.
The double-storey restaurant on
Compensation Beach Road, owned
and operated from the start by
local couple Jason and Mel Powell,
has been a seafood haven for local
regulars and holidaymakers. You’re
always guaranteed a warm welcome,
world class ocean views, and delicious
Mediterranean style seafood and sushi.
Not to mention you can still bring the
whole family for a hearty meal without
breaking the bank.
The team still comprises mostly of
original staff members who joined
Jason and Mel way back in 2017.
Skilfully led by general manager
Perfect Mhlongo and Beauty Kwela,
the friendly faces at OB will most likely
greet you by name after your first few
visits!
The focus is on family here, offering
a safe and tranquil space to spend
relaxed, quality time together over a
game of Uno or a fun ocean-themed
word search (just ask your waiter for
the ‘fun box’ of games and activities).
The menu is a hit with pensioners
too, who find every day value in
each seasonal offering. This summer,
the group has delivered something
special with a new-look menu, and
fresh Mediterranean flavours. Choose
from edamame fritters and vibrant
bowls of sushi rice or quinoa with tasty
toppings, or fish on the bone (like the
herby lemon sole) and new signature
sushi (try the almond and prawn rolls!).
Ocean Basket offers even more value
with their generous sharing platters,
and of course the homemade rolls
and trio of sauces that come free with
every meal.
Prawns with rosé and a chardonnay and quick quesadilla from Jamie. Let’s eat outdoors.
Rakmacka prawn and salad cups
with a dill and lemon mayo
This easy dish makes a delicious lunch for four
Serve it with a glass of Allesverloren Tinta Rosé.
You’ll need: For the prawns ... 32 large prawns
(deveined and shelled, but you can leave the
tail intact), 2 Tbsp olive oil, 2 Tbsp butter,
2 cloves garlic (finely crushed), juice of half a
lemon, salt and freshly milled pepper
For the sauce ... 1 to 2 Tbsp lemon juice (to
taste), half a cup good quality mayonnaise,
2 Tbsp chopped fresh dill, 2tsp freshly grated
lemon rind (chopped superfine), salt and
freshly milled pepper
For the melba toast ... 2 mini-French loaves or
1 small ciabatta. 2 Tbsp olive oil, sea salt flakes
For serving ... 2 to3 heads romaine lettuce
hearts, leaves carefully broken apart and rinsed,
fresh lemon wedges
To make: Preheat the oven to 180C. To make
the melba toast, slice the bread as thin as you
can without it crumbling (older bread generally
works better). Spread out in a single layer on a
baking tray. Brush each slice with olive oil. Bake
for 10 minutes, or until they start to go golden
around the edges.
To cook the prawns, heat the butter and oil
until bubbling and then add the prawns.
Avoid crowding the pan by cooking the
prawns in two batches. Add the garlic and
cook for about 5 minutes until the prawns
start going pink. Prawns cook very fast –
remove them from the heat as soon as they
go pink. Season well with salt, pepper, and a
generous squeeze of lemon juice.
To make the sauce, mix all the ingredients
together well. Place two prawns into the
hollow of each salad leaf, serve with a dollop of
the sauce, and melba toast.
Enjoy with a glass of Allesverloren Tinta Rosé
... a pretty blush coloured wine which has
the scent of strawberries and raspberries and
tastes of fresh raspberries, cherries and a hint of
vanilla. R87 from allesverloren.co.za
One-pan meals from Jamie ... who’s coming for dinner?
On our wish list . . . Jamie popping in for the hols, and taking over the
kitchen. Not. Going. To happen. But a close second is ONE - smart
simplicity with his one-pan meals (which means less washing up ...
another wish that’s always high up on our list). Each recipe uses less
than eight ingredients, there’s minimum prep needed and range from
an eight-minute smoked salmon pasta to a one hour cajun chicken
traybake (with sweet onions and peppers, fluffy rice and yoghurt - it
takes just seven minutes to prep, then pop into the oven and relax). Then
there is the amazing giant Yorkshire pud - loaded with brie and sweet
roasted grapes, spring onions and tarragon. There are flat breads and
fishcakes and a fabulous batch cooking chapter (one cook, half a dozen
meals). It’s a use-it-forever cookbook ! Micheal Joseph, R490.
Coastal
The classic, 100 per cent
linen, relaxed fit shirt
dress, with cropped
sleeves, side pockets,
mother-of-pearl
buttons. R1199 from
sweetpeas.co.za (in fact,
if you visit Sweetpeas,
there’s very little that
doesn’t suit the look).
grandmother
It’s not just fashion ...
rather a way of life
So what is it ... this Coastal Grandmother way of life
that’s sweeping across the world? If you’re not one of
the million-plus who’ve spotted the trend, started by
TikToker Lex Nicoleta, here’s the lowdown.
Firstly, and massively important, you don’t need to be
a grandmother. Nor do you need to live on the coast.
Rather, it’s a way of life, a classic, timeless look that’s
stylish and comfy and effortless.
It’s ageless, so think Dianne Keaton in Something’s Got
To Give (in fact, watch Nancy Meyer’s The Parent Trap
and It’s Complicated, too, for inspiration), but then know
it’s also the younger Anne Hathaway, who posted a
photo of herself in a casual but classic white and offwhite
outfit, complete with bucket hat, saying “I have
been ready for #coastalgrandmother chic since before
TikTok was born. May this moment never end.”
It’s all muted colours - white with egg-shell and ivory
and milk, gentle seaside-blue and seaweed-green, in
soft fabrics - linen, pure cotton, cashmere.
Wardrobe essentials are oversized button-down shirts,
chinos and drawstring palazzo pants, flowing, easy-towear
maxi dresses, bucket hats and espadrilles.
But it’s not all about the wardrobe. Coastal
Grandmothers is also about the way you live.
It’s gardening, and growing your own herbs. It’s
hydrangeas. It’s long leisurely walks - on the beach if
you’re there, or in the park. It’s shopping at the local
farmers market, and entertaining at big, long outdoor
tables with rattan placemats and pure linen napkins,
oversized glasses of wine and a meal from one of Ina
Gartan’s Barefoot Contessa cookbooks ... think truffled
mac and cheese, or lobster pot pie, or fresh fig and
ricotta cake. And there’s always - always - a bowl of
fresh lemons on the table.
There’s even a Spotify Coastal Grandmother playlist by
lexnicoleta ... all Marvin Gaye followed by Gladys Knight
and the Pips, Four Tops and Norah Jones, John Legend
and Steve Tyrell ... and you’ll definitely hear Elton’s
Bennie and the Jets and Natalie Cole’s This Will Be.
Luxurious, laid back, comfortable, generous ... it’s
dressing, decorating and living your best life.
And if you haven’t already embraced it, this Summer’s
the perfect time to start.
Hydrangeas. Everywhere!
It’s a life-at-the-beach vibe ...
even if you don’t live at the ocean
While ‘Coastal Grandmother’ is a newish phrase, the actual trend
has been around for decades. It’s really old-style, seaside chic ...
natural, understated, slightly rustic but always elegant ... think
white walls and slipcover sofas in pale shades of the beach and
the ocean, open plan kitchens with open shelves showing off
your wonky platters. There are cable knit throws on the chairs
and flowers from the garden plonked casually in jugs or vases,
loads of natural light and open windows and almost-sheer
gauzy curtains. It’s all books - coffee table and beach reads, and
scented candles - lit every night and not just on occasion. Oh.
And it’s stripes. Ticking never looked more at home.
Sinawo woven placemats, linen napkins, simple
tableware ... the perfect Coastal Grandmother setting.
All from Woolworths.
Dulux’s Colour of the Year for 2023 is Wild Wonder ... inspired by nature
inspiration and a myriad of blueprints for living. And each of the four
2023 stories - Lush, Buzz, Raw and Flow colours help you capture the
Summer
pet care
WANT TO
STUDY
DESIGN?
While we all love the warmer weather, there
are some important things to keep in mind
when you’re a pet owner in the summer
months . . .
1. Insects, pests and parasites thrive in hot weather. When
your pet plays outside, they are exposed to fleas, ticks and
mites (and parasites can flourish indoors as well).
2. As the season changes, irritants in the air increase. Instead
of hay fever, though, pets can experience itchy, dry skin.
3. Another very important heat-related pet health hazard to
be aware of is dehydration, which could lead to heat stroke
and can be fatal if left untreated. Ensure you pets have
access to drinkable water, especially when playing outdoors.
4. Ensure there’s a shelter for your pet in the event of
extreme weather like rainstorms or heat waves.
5. Try not to walk your dog in excessive heat as their
footpads could get burnt, especially on tar roads.
6. Consider using pet-safe sunscreen on light-skinned pets
(ears, noses and bellies).
Garden
planning
As we head into the warmer months
and spend more time outdoors, we are
reminded of the importance of putting
careful thought and planning into our
gardens. Award-winning Elaleni Coastal
Forest Estate landscape architect
Lucas Uys shares some advice.
What are some of the current landscaping trends on the
North Coast?
After Covid, the biggest trend that has emerged seems to be
people wanting to 'ground' or connect to real elements within
their landscape. It's all about germinating seeds, growing
plants and producing food. People have felt the urge to get off
the grid, harvest water and become more sustainable. There is
a definite shift towards going totally natural.
What about colours, shapes and plants?
You have two totally different trends and schools of thought
at the moment - those who support 'over-regulated'
environmental control in some estates without trend or
movement, and those who want to brighten up their lives with
flowering orchids and large monstera plant leaves and textures.
In terms of colour, it's mostly green. Vertical herb gardens and
the use of special LED lighting are also very popular.
What are your top three tips for first-time home builders
with regards to landscaping?
* Resolve your earthworks, terraces and stormwater
management;
* Spend money on durable hardscape - paving and vertical
walls;
* Plant the correct tree frame/screen planting to have a longterm
privacy solution.
Advice for gardening in the summer months?
It's not too late to prune trees and cut shrubs back if
overgrown. Carry on mulching to keep moisture in during
hot summer days and stimulate micro-organisms - after some
years your garden will smell like a wet forest floor! Make sure
your stormwater management is sorted (even for a 1:200-year
flood). Control garden bugs in the friendliest possible manner
and remember to service your irrigation system to prevent
water loss and align spray heads.
About Lucas Uys
Award-winning Elaleni Estate landscape architect Lucas
trend that has gripped the North Coast, of a natural, living
landscape within Elaleni in Sheffield Beach. Highly qualified
and experienced, Uys has been involved in more than 4 000
design projects in his career, and some of the other memorable
Fun
in the
Mud
Grab
A fun day out for women of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness
levels, Muddy Princess has become the largest women’sonly
obstacle race in the country. To date, more than 96 000
participants have taken part in events around the country.
This month, on 20 November, the race is taking place on the
Dolphin Coast (at Oaklands Equestrian Estate) for the very
first time.
Partnering with the Pink Drive breast cancer awareness
charity, Muddy Princess events are all about having fun and
bonding with your girls. As long as you can run, walk, crawl,
climb, laugh and play ... and you don't mind getting down
and a little dirty ... this is for you.
There is no timekeeping (and therefore no competition) and
the event really is all about women supporting women and
simply having fun.
Embracing all women and their differences, Muddy Princess
is an inclusive, memorable event that allows you to have
fun in the mud while supporting one another, challenging
your takkies, throw on a pink tutu and get
your girlfriends together … it’s time to have
some fun in the mud! We can’t wait to join the
North Coast’s very first Muddy Princess 5km
obstacle race this month.
yourself and (maybe) stepping out of your comfort zone.
So, what can you expect? Each event comprises of
approximately 16 to 18 obstacles and up to 4 000
participants. There are water stations, professional
photographers and showers to clean off at the end.
Everyone gets a medal (yay!) and there is an 'event village'
where you (and your family and support team) can buy food
and drinks, merchandise and treats.
The event is open to all women (there is even a 'little
princess' ticket for girls between 6 and 13 years).
Muddy Princess Dolphin Coast takes place on Sunday, 20
November, from 8am to 4pm at Oaklands Equestrian Estate.
The event area opens at 7am, but the first wave will go off
at 8am and continue every 20 minutes until the last wave in
the afternoon.
Romance on the West Coast
Seaside luxury at the glorious Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel
We spent quite
some time
sitting right
here, loving
the view!
62 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga November 2022
There are so many reasons why we love Paternoster ... the
quintessential fisherman’s village on the Cape West Coast.
But we admit, right up at the top of the list of loves is the
utterly sensational Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel.
Sitting on the edge of the long, white, shell-strewn beach and
the somewhat chilly, wild sea, this laid-back luxurious, romantic
boutique hotel is all wide open spaces and huge skies and
views forever.
And when we say luxurious, we mean in the very best sense of
the word. So there’s no glitz - rather all calm hues, with furniture
and fittings made locally out of stone, wood and fine organic
linen. No pretentiousness - just secluded comfy nooks and top
notch, warm, personal service. For heaven’s sake ... there’s even
a no shoes suggestion ... you’re encouraged to leave them at
the door and relax.
It’s all serenity and natural and private and secluded ... the
hotel boasts a philosophy of being in harmony with nature
and blending in with the delicate beauty of the surroundings.
And we can think of nowhere we’d rather be at the end of this
rather stressful year.
The rooms and suites - a little over a dozen - have been
designed to blur the lines between indoors and out and
are a clever fusion of beach style and contemporary luxury.
Deceptively simple ... but so much thought has gone into
making them as comfortable as possible.

So you can expect sink-in-me sofas
and private courtyards and terraces,
fireplaces in some of the rooms,
outdoor showers in others. It’s all
natural bath salts alongside state-ofthe-art
Bang & Olufsen audio systems,
home-made fudge by the beds at
night rubbing sweet shoulders with
top notch coffee machines.
The attention to detail is phenomenal.
Request oat milk with your afterdinner
coffee and by the time you
return to your room, there’s oat milk
in your mini fridge for the rest of your
stay. Ask for fresh lemon squeezed
into hot water for breakfast ... the next
morning there’s a pot of boiling water
and half a lemon waiting on the table.
Talking breakfast and dinner ... The
Strandloper is home to Leeto, what
we rate one of the best restaurants in
the country. With a strong emphasis
on local, seasonal products, the
restaurant, which overlooks the beach
and sea, is simply but exquisitely
furnished and is run by Chef Garth
Almazan, a Capetonian who grew up
in a fisherman’s family and ensures
the food is fuss-free and simple, but
with a local West Coast twist. Expect
dishes like West Coast oysters with
lime and tabasco, Malay spiced
mussel soup and seafood linguini.
There’s a spring risotto loaded with
baby spinach, broccoli, baby marrow,
snap peas, portobello mushrooms,
goat’s feta, white truffle oil, parmesan
and ciabatta crumbs that we’ll order
again and again and again, should
we be fortunate enough to return,
and a chickpea, lentil and spinach
curry served with potato samoosa
... swoon. Oh. And marmalade icecream.
Be still my beating heart! The
food is subtly sophisticated, Garth
says, which is a reflection of the
entire Strandloper experience.
While it would be easy - and massively
enjoyable - to sit on the terrace and
admire the fynbos and the sea for
hours, leaving just to stroll down
to dinner, there’s loads to make a
holiday in the area hugely enjoyable.
For the hedonistic, the hotel has an
exceptional spa, but for the more
energetic the hotel concierge can
arrange cycling, guided bush hikes
(a lovely way to explore the area),
guided horseback riding along the
beach, boat bird safaris up the river,
as well as bird photographic safaris,
kayaking and beach buddy dunes
tours - which are fabulous fun.
All well organised and thoroughly
enjoyable. But we’re on the same
page as the hotel team ... who say,
first and foremost, they want guests
to experience the ultimate luxury –
the art of doing nothing. To ground
themselves again and to take the time
to simply be. To be reminded about
what is really important in life. For
them to be immersed in a feeling of
tranquillity. To really take time to drink
in the breathtaking, raw beauty of
this piece of West Coast paradise and
to enjoy it as much as they do. And it
didn’t take much to convince us to
do just that!
It’s just not going to be a talked-about affair
without a couple of bottles of Hotel Starlino. With
bottles Inspired by the Art Nouveau architecture of
the distillery - Torino Distillati - located just outside
of Turin - the birthplace of Aperitivo, there are three
flavours and they’re equally appealing. Starlino
Arancione Aperitivo is made with Italian orange
peel, lemon peel and herbs and spices. Starlino
Rosa is a zesty and complex citrus-forward blend of
Italian pink grapefruit, lemon and orange and is an
intriguing bittersweet botanical Aperitivo. Starlino
Rosso Vermouth is a traditional red Vermouth di
Torino - aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels for a rich,
warm, spicy aroma and flavour. One part Aperitivo,
three parts prosecco or soda, garnished with an
orange or grapefruit slice and plenty of ice.
Add a bottle or two of Monte Stambecco. A rich
golden, bold Italian Amaro liqueur, named after the
ibex - a long-horned mountain goat which roams
the Italian Alps. Bittersweet - it was originally
created to aid digestion, it’s all citrus, cinnamon,
cardamom and cherry. Drink it neat as a premium
shooter, over ice or in a variety of Amaro cocktails.
Then make sure there are half a dozen or so bottles
of Prosecco Rosé DOC Mionetto ... an Italian
Prosecco from the small village of Valdobbiadene.
Extra dry, pale pink, with honey and bread crust
aromas, it’s a glass of bubbly heaven.
Finally, based on the premise that if three-quarters
of your cocktail is the mixer, mix with the best!
Fever Tree is a range made with naturally sourced
ingredients, no artificial sweeteners and under 40
calories to create sophisticated yet simple spritzers
with exceptional flavour.
It’s the season of the
cocktail party. And we’re
thinking Amalfi Coast
vibe. Floaty dresses and
high heels with sexy
drinks and Italian snacks
as the sun goes down.
Saluti!
