First stage of Kakaha Park opens Saturday TAKE YOUR dog and your bike and get ready to have some fun. Kakaha Park, in Prebbleton, is opening its first stage with an activity day this Saturday. From 10am, people are invited to hop on their bike and try out the new snake run and be among the first to enjoy the new trails around the park. Then from midday dog owners are invited to bring down their fluffy friends to enjoy the district’s latest dog exercise area. Throughout the day there will be music, lawn games and tours of the park by the district council team, talking through key features and the future development of the park. The main car park will not be open at this time, so biking or walking to the park is encouraged. Follow the rail trail along Birchs Rd. Access to the park is from TRADITIONAL Filipino music and Christmas carols will take centre stage at Te Ara Ātea on Saturday, when the Musika Filipinas Aotearoa Choir comes to Rolleston. This is the first time the group will perform in Selwyn, thanks to the support of the district Leadleys Rd at the Birchs Rd end. Along with bike trails, sports grounds and the new dog park, the first stage of the park will include a mini playground. The further stages will see a changing room and car parking opening next year, followed by more off-road bike trails, a water way and large areas of native planting over the next five years. The name Kakaha Park has been gifted by Te Taumutu Rūnanga and Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga for the 22-hectare park. Kakaha is the Māori word for Astelia fragransor bush lily – a native flax-like plant often used for weaving. There is evidence of kakaha on Kā Pākihi Whakatekateka o Waitaha, the Canterbury Plains before European settlement, while the name also reflects the park’s location in the network of mahika kai (food gathering) sites on the plains. All planting in the park will be natives. Concert combines Filipino and Christmas music council’s Creative Communities Scheme Funding. Musical Director Kristian Rubi says the Christchurch-based choir has been rehearsing twice a week in preparation. “We’re really excited about coming to Rolleston. We have a few members who live in Selwyn including our president and one of our sopranos. It’s inspired us to give back to the community. “Selwyn is a fast-growing community and there are many Filipinos there,” he says. The performance, Ating Musika (Our Music), will include songs adapted from Filipino to THE DISTRICT council’s animal control team has dealt with 1234 complaints about dogs and issued 1094 infringement notices in the last year. Fourteen dogs were classified as dangerous throughout the year, and 88 as menacing. Sixty dogs were impounded in the district council-owned facility. Fifty-two of these were returned to their owners, five were rehomed, and three were destroyed. “The number of dogs impounded is low when compared to the number of dogs microchipped, which was 13,524 by the end of the reporting period,” the team said in the report. “One hundred per cent registration of all known and registered dogs that still reside in the district from the previous english and te reo Māori. It will be split into two acts, with the first featuring Filipino songs, and the second act being a tribute to one of the group’s favourite traditions – Christmas. Kristian says for many Filipinos, Christmas preparations begin in September, with financial year was attained. The council provides a monthly microchipping service which is free for dogs that are legally required to be microchipped. Council achieved an 89.88 per cent compliance rate of dogs legally required to be microchipped.” On dog exercise facilities, the team said McHughs Forest Park, Darfield, Rolleston and Leeston dog parks were “extremely popular” with dog owners.
