Get rid of those germs
Not many people know is that kitchens
can harbour more germs than a toilet,
particularly in the sink and surface areas.
Even though surfaces may appear
clean, they may still harbor invisible
bacteria such as Salmonella and E coli.
Sponges and rags, countertops and
cutting boards are common kitchen
surfaces where bacteria can thrive.
We often wash our hands in the
kitchen sink, but when doing that you
could be making the sink dirty? The
bacteria is then washed into the sink and
drain. Between prepping and cleaning,
the kitchen is an active incubator for
bacteria.
So what can you do to minimise the
risk of contamination from your sink?
Disinfect it from time to time, preferably
using an antibacterial cleaner, and wash
vegetables under running water rather
than filling up the sink.
Here are some more tips to make sure
your kitchen is germ free.
Clean your wooden cutting
boards
1. Scrub the board and sprinkle with
coarse salt. Cut a lemon in half and rub
cut-side-down over the salt on the board,
scrubbing in small circles, working in the
direction of the grain.
1. Let it sit. Allow the salt and lemon
solution to sit for about 5 minutes.
2. Rinse. Rinse the board thoroughly,
making sure all of the salt is removed,
then dry it.
Clean out your dishwasher filter
If you rinse your plates before loading
them, you may only need to do this once
a year.
1. Remove your filter from the
dishwasher. Consult your owner’s manual
for the location.
2. Run water over the lower filter to
remove debris. If needed, use a soft brush
and dish soap as well.
3. Return the filter to your
dishwasher, making sure each piece is
locked into place.
Clean the inside of your fridge
1. Remove food from your
refrigerator and freezer and place
it in coolers. Throw out spoiled or
expired food, then take out the shelves
and drawers to get them to room
temperature.
2. Using a degreasing non-abrasive
cleaner, wipe down the walls, ceiling and
bottom of your refrigerator and rinse
with a soft, damp cloth.
3. With the same process, wipe down
and rinse the drawers and shelves. Let
them dry completely before replacing
