En collaboration avec SOS Carbon, NODO Logistics et Grupo
Punta Cana, le finlandais a ordonnancé l’exportation - débutée en
juin 2022 - de cent camions de sargasse vers Helsinki, suivie, dans
un second temps, de l’implantation d’une usine de biotraitement
dans la Caraïbe, très potentiellement en République Dominicaine.
L’opération d’Origin by Ocean serait enfin synonyme de création
d’emplois sur le littoral dominicain : un dynamisme qui concernerait
de nombreux secteurs, du récolteur à l’exportateur en passant
par le pêcheur. En choisissant le parti de la valorisation de l’algue,
dénouement de plus en plus épousé par la Caraïbe, Origin by
Ocean rejoint les rangs d’une opposition durable à l’échouage du
sargassum et se dresse plus largement devant une problématique
environnementale majeure : l’eutrophisation des océans.
Effet de cascade
Née au large des côtes brésiliennes et d’Afrique occidentale,
à l’origine de « la Grande ceinture des sargasses de l’Atlantique »,
la prolifération du sargassum dans la région serait en partie
dû aux apports en nutriments du fleuve Amazone, stimulés par
la déforestation croissante de l’Amazonie et la destruction de
sa mangrove, filtres naturels à l’embouchure du fleuve. Parmi
d’autres facteurs évoqués, celle de la chimie altérée de l’océan,
entre réchauffement et pollution des eaux.

Cana, the Finnish company has ordered the shipping of one hundred
truckloads of sargassum to Helsinki, starting in June 2022, and it
will be followed by the establishment of a bioprocessing plant in
the Caribbean, potentially in the Dominican Republic.
Origin by Ocean’s operation would come along with job creations on
the Dominican coast: it would involve many sectors, from harvesters
to exporters, including fishermen. By opting for recovering seaweed,
a solution increasingly adopted in the Caribbean, Origin by Ocean
joins the ranks of a sustainable opposition to the stranding of
sargassum and more generally confronts a major environmental
issue: ocean eutrophication.
Cascading effects
Born off the coasts of Brazil and West Africa, at the origin of
the "Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt", sargassum proliferation
in the region appears to be partly due to nutrient inputs from
the Amazon River, stimulated by the increasing deforestation
of the Amazon and the destruction of its mangroves that
are natural filters at the river mouth. Among other factors
mentioned is the altered chemistry of the ocean, between
water pollution and warming.
