partageaient la même philosophie. Son plaisir, c’était la simplicité.
W : Vous avez lancé un appel sur les réseaux sociaux afin de
recueillir des témoignages. La population de l’île a-t-elle répondu
présente ?
CM : Totalement ! C’est une exposition participative. Le propriétaire
d’Alyzée X, bateau qui faisait la navette entre la villa de Rockefeller et
sa propriété de Gustavia, nous a autorisé à mouiller le bateau devant
le Wall House le temps de l’exposition. Un menuisier à la retraite de
l’île s’est autrement proposé de faire une maquette de cette villa,
et l’actuelle propriétaire nous a permis de visiter la maison et d’en
étudier certains plans. La plupart des gens ayant travaillé sur le
chantier ont malheureusement disparu aujourd’hui, mais ceux qui
restent et les enfants des défunts ont bien voulu partager avec nous
leurs anecdotes. Il est par exemple intéressant que beaucoup, partis
à l’époque chercher du travail ailleurs, soient revenus sur l’île pour
travailler sur cette maison. David Rockefeller avait sinon eu l’idée de
faire travailler tous les quartiers de l’île : en distribuant l’argent de
façon la plus équitable possible, il espérait voir se développer l’île
sans la changer, et conserver l’âme de Saint-Barth.

Barth would be bought up by hotel chains. He wanted as few people
here as possible: until the 1980’s, every time a large piece of land
was on the market, he tried to buy it (so it wasn’t developed) or have
his friends who shared the same philosophy buy it. He delighted in
simplicity.
W: You made an announcement on social media in order to gather
stories about the property. Did the local population respond
positively?
CM: Totally! It’s a participatory exhibit. The owner of Alyzée X,
the boat that ferried people between the Rockefeller villa and his
property in Gustavia, has authorized us to anchor the boat in front
of the Wall House during the exhibit. A retired woodworker on the
island has offered to create a model of the villa, and the current
owner allowed us to visit the house and to study the plans. Sadly,
most of the people who worked on the construction site are no
longer alive, but those who remain, and the children of those who
are gone, were happy to share their anecdotes with us. It is, for
example, interesting that at that time, many who had left the island
to look for work elsewhere, came back to work on that house. David
Rockefeller wanted to share the jobs with people from all parts of
the island; by distributing the money as equitably as possible, he
hoped to see the island develop, yet not change, conserving the
soul of Saint Barth.
