GOH BALLET’S
THE NUTCRACKER
After a two-year hiatus, Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker finally
returned to the stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
Since opening in 2009, the production has become a beloved
annual holiday tradition for thousands of families around the Lower
Mainland. During the pandemic, Goh Ballet kept the spirit alive
with filmed adaptations of The Nutcracker, with a reimagined and
pandemic-focused storyline, which was streamed online for free.
The 2022 production under the guidance of Executive Producer
Chan Hon Goh and Emmy-winning choreographer Anna-Marie
Holmes saw stars from New York City Ballet, Philadelphia Ballet,
Pacific Northwest Ballet, and National Ballet of China with live
accompaniment by the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.
Emerging 11-year-old ballerina Theepika Sivananthan set another
premiere as the first-ever South Asian Clara in Canada.
Traditionally, the show also included some celebrity guests, Netflixstar
Jacqueline Robbins, reprised her role as the Grandmother
and popular Vancouver-based drag performer Christopher Hunte
(aka Symone) played Mother Ginger.
Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker featured over two hundred local performers
along side dance luminaries performing Tchaikovsky’s iconic
holiday classic, transcending the audience on a spectacular journey to
the magical kingdom with glittering snowflakes,waltzing flowers
and the spellbinding Sugar Plum Fairy.
