REINCARNATION OF A LEGEND
CSL - “Coupé Sport Lightweight”. Three iconic letters. The BMW 3.0 CSL is one
of the most legendary vehicles in BMW’s history. In 1972, Bob Lutz, a passionate
motorsport enthusiast, took over sales at BMW and pushed ahead with the
return of BMW works teams to touring car sport. The birth of BMW M.
The intention of uniting all of BMW’s motorsport engagements under one
roof ultimately led to the founding of BMW Motorsport GmbH in the same year.
Just one year later, the final version of the 3.0 CSL appeared. It should become
a legend, winning six European championships, setting a sensational lap record
on the Nürburgring and starting the BMW Art Car series. Back then, the BMW
3.0 CSL was the most powerful street version of the series and wherever it
turned up, it stood out from the crowd. In 2022, BMW M’s anniversary year,
the ‘Batmobile’ has been reborn. The new BMW 3.0 CSL is a reincarnation of a
legendary sports car both for the racetrack and the road.
Developed with the intention of combining the best of five decades of racing expertise from BMW M GmbH, the BMW 3.0 CSL is produced in a
strictly limited edition of only 50 consecutively numbered units. It features the most powerful straight six-cylinder engine ever used in a road-legal
BMW M automobile, mobilising a maximum output of 412 kW/560 hp and 406lb-ft of torque. To transfer the drive power to the road via the rear
wheels, the developers of the BMW 3.0 CSL coupled the engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox whose spread and transmission ratios are ideally
matched to the performance characteristics. Obviously, there is a lot more, including an active M differential, a traction control with ten stages of
intervention, massive M carbon ceramic brakes hiding under 20in/21in alloys and carbon fibre reinforced plastic for “virtually all bodywork sections”.
Each Car will take 30 specially trained M technicians three months to finish, passing through eight assembly and production cycles, making the
BMW 3.0 CSL the most exclusive automobile BMW M has ever produced. The legend lives on...
