Book club
Judge Julia Cummins had no obvious
enemies. There was no forced entry
to her apartment, where the bodies
of her and her bodyguard are found
brutally murdered. Her ex and her
teenage son both have strong alibies,
the neighbours heard nothing, and
the killer left behind a strange calling
card. It’s up to FBI agent Amos Decker
to investigate ... kicking off with the
question as to why the judge felt she
needed a bodyguard in the first place.
And while he investigates, he’s also
dealing with personal baggage ... the
suicide of a close friend, the receipt
of a letter concerning a personal,
and possibly life-changing, issue,
and a new partner. Long Shadows is
The little big solution
to your water needs
Besides being climate friendly and
helping cut costs, water tanks are
becoming almost as important as
inverters, with water outages striking
hard. Harvesting and storing may,
in our future, be essential ... there’s
already an increasing demand from
buyers and renters for off-the-grid
and back-up solutions. But generally
it’s only larger homes that have space
for big tanks, with smaller properties
and townhouses losing out. So ... a
small solution for a big problem. The
new Slimline tanks from JoJo are
ideal for limited spaces. Smallest of
the range is the 1000-litre SuperSlim
tank ... perfect for city living, where
limited space requires a snug fit into
corners and down narrow walkways.
It attaches to a wall to keep it secure
and is supplied with the basics
required for installation. Designed for
ease of use, it has various connection
options to ensure seamless
installation into your setup, can be
installed with some simple DIY, and if
you’re a renter or selling up, you can
remove it and take it with you. Jolly
nifty ... and available in a couple of
colours, too. Details: jojo.co.za
It is time to light
those braai fires
If you are in for a rustic experience and don’t expect to dine at tables
laid in silver and porcelain, then a visit to the Fire Factory is an absolute
must. We did not quite know what to expect but can assure you a real
treat. In true Brafia style, Corne Bornman braved the heat of open flames
where a whole pig cooked (or will that be braaied?) to perfection in the
fire pit and chickens roasted over the flames in a chain cage. Dished
up with salads, pap and relish and bread rolls, well, let’s just say, those
guests who could handle seconds would most certainly have dished up
again. To top a really good evening off, the Fire Factory added good live
entertainment by Bacchus Nel. Oh, and let’s not forget they also offer a
platform for local artists to exhibit their work. Currently on exhibition are
Young, unbreakable and
Jessica Pita lost her vision
actual show-stopper.
One can tell right away that Jessica is going to inspire you as
soon as you meet her. It is impossible to tell that she has a
disability because of her inner beauty. She’s simply a bubbly
person inside and out. The story of her life is one of accepting
what life throws at you and making the most of it. The words
from Carrie Underwood’s song ‘I’m invincible, unbreakable,
unstoppable, unshakeable’ are among her favourite quotes,
and this is exactly how Jessica describes herself.
Losing her sight
Jessica was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2014 and at the
age of 11 lost her vision after the removal of the tumour.
‘It all started with an optometrist appointment, showcasing
my abnormally swollen optic nerves as the main feature.
‘This, in turn, led to me being rushed off to an ophthalmologist.
At this appointment, the spotlight was focused on the
new roommate my brain was sharing its home with, a brain
tumour,” Jessica says.
Doctors gave her six to 12 months chance of survival if the
tumour did not get removed.
Soon Jessica underwent an 11-hour surgery which is ironic
as the length of her operation represented her age.
‘My family said those 11 hours felt like forever. Nevertheless,
everyone was jubilant once the surgeon came out
proclaiming it had ended successfully.’
One thing the Pita’s discovered was that Jessica’s eyesight
was damaged to the point of her being proclaimed blind.
‘We thought over time it would heal but no luck, it became
my new normal. I got used to it pretty soon. These weeks
passed in a flash although they had the greatest effect on
my and my family’s lives.
‘We all tried to get back into a routine once I returned
home. As I was only 11 there was still school to consider
but the doctor wanted me to stay home and allow my
brain to heal completely.
‘One thing he didn’t consider was that not only was I blind
but I was also extremely stubborn and bored with nothing
to do at home so I was able to twist his and my parents’
arms in letting me go back to school.’
With the new news that she was blind, people automatically
assumed that Jessica should be going to a school for
the blind.
‘My automatic thought was on the total opposite side
of that spectrum. I was still able to function like all the
abled-bodied people in my school, and the only thing
missing was my eyesight.’
It was her determination that kept her on the path she wanted
to follow. Some things, like her friends reaching milestones
such as getting their first car, made her realise that it will
never happen to her. It made her sad, but she always finds a
way to get through and move on.
‘It has been hard. As her mother, I wish I could give her my
sight, or, you know, whatever she needs just to live her life.
Seeing how others have treated her broke my heart, but at
the end of the day it was Jessica who helped me to
move past it because nothing brings her down,’ says her
mother, Paula.
Her school years
Her mother dropped everything and helped Jessica to finish
primary school.
She went to school with her every day taking notes and
helping Jessica.
‘She would copy everything off the boards into my books.’
For her high school career, Jessica applied for a scribe and a
few concessions.
‘We then purchased desktop magnifiers called Topaz which I
was able to use to read and write. I got my first formal scribe
along with the extra time concession thereafter.
‘As I progressed through my school career, I realised the irony
behind my life. I was in an amazingly academic school, yet
the understanding of my disability was so low. As it was not
necessarily seen as a disability, excuse the pun, I was accused
of faking my disability.
‘I trained myself to memorise my surroundings to be able
to be independently mobile. Thus, because ‘the blind girl’
was seen walking alone, I was a liar. People would tease
and laugh behind my back when I had my ‘blind girl’ awkward
moments.
‘I was accused of cheating because it was assumed my scribe
would do my work for me instead of me doing it myself.
Blindness affects the eyesight, not the hearing, so I couldn’t
stop myself from hearing what people thought about me.’
Finding her niche
Moving into tertiary education though, she found that people
are so much more mature and accepting which brings
her the utmost joy.
‘I know that there is never going to be a moment where I
don’t come into contact with someone that does not completely
understand.’
Throughout her journey, she kept standing because of her
strong support system. ‘My support system just made things
a little easier. It was nice knowing that I still have people on
my side.
‘I want to increase the number of people that are willing to
accept everyone for whom they are. I want to obliterate the
discriminatory treatment of people who may seem different
just for being who they are.’
Flying Blind was started by Jessica to inspire people with
disabilities and let them know they are not alone.
‘I’ve found some healing through being a motivational speaker
and inspiring others.
‘The same respect and dignity should be accorded to them
as everyone else.’
The future holds big plans for Jessica as she is waiting for
feedback from varsity on her eligibility to study nutrition. She
also wants to grow Flying Blind.
Her dream is to one day start a foundation that assists people
with disabilities financially.
As Jessica points out, a disabled person has access to many
things that make life easier in some way, but money is usually
the biggest barrier.
Disability does not make things impossible, it just makes
them harder, and if she could change the world’s perspective
about people with disabilities, she would remove the stigma
that they are worthless.
‘An empathy-based approach is better than a sympathy-based
approach. You make the world and your life what
you want it to be.’
Confidence is key
Although she dreamt
of being a model since
a young age, Shannon
French has discovered
that she does not want to
be a supermodel but
a role model
who inspires
others to
reach for
the stars
and
never
back
down.
Growing up and looking at Victoria’s
Secret runway shows in magazines,
she knew modelling was something
she wanted to do.
‘When you are a child, especially a
girl, your mother is one of your most
influential role models.
The modelling industry was something
my mother did when she was
younger and is now something
both of us are passionate
about.’
The model talks about
her career aspirations
and why she chose this
field.
The secret to modelling
is not being
perfect
Before Shannon’s
modelling career,
she was a dancer.
‘I started dancing at
the age of three and
did all styles like ballet, modern, hip
hop, jazz and Spanish. I danced for 15
years and did multiple competitions
and exams that enabled me to qualify
as a teacher.
‘Unfortunately, in 2020, I stopped with
the pandemic and did not finish my
last exams. I still dance in my free time
and do competitions because I love
dancing,’ said Shannon.
‘In 2018, I started my modelling career
and won my first show six months
later. Thereafter, I never stopped.’
In the same year, she walked away as
the national model of the year in the
fashion division.
‘In 2019, I won the international
model of the year and, in 2021, I won
national model of the year in the skills
division.’
2021 was a big year for her because
she also won the Face of Talent Africa.
A highlight she is proud of is winning
the Miss Alberton pageant last year.
14 Get It Joburg South • Alberton • Bedfordview • Greenstone • Modderfontein March 2023

‘I attended my first pageant in my
career and won the title of Miss
Alberton 2022.
‘I am proud of all my achievements
through the years, especially the opportunity
that came along last year
where I got the chance to walk as a
model for a well-known designer at
the SA Fashion Week,’ Shannon said.
‘Going to castings and fittings every
other day and being part of a big
event with different brands and local
designers was amazing.’
Shannon says the best part of modelling
is when the hard work pays off
and you can be proud of yourself.
She also enjoys booking jobs, doing
photoshoots and going abroad.
‘The hardest challenges in modelling
are not always getting the job or not
winning all the titles. In my opinion,
that is how you learn to keep your
head up, stay humble and work harder
for the opportunities you want.
‘You do not need to be perfect to be
a successful model. Just be you.
‘I have training every week, and
some weeks you have jobs two to
three times a week, going to fittings
or doing presentations for clients. My
schedule gets busy
and sometimes
I feel like I do not have enough hours
in a day.’
Charity work
Shannon said that being a model
also brought along charity work,
something she fell in love with.
‘My love for charity came from giving
back to the animals. I always try to
support the Alberton SPCA and other
animal shelters.’
When doing fundraisers she will ask
for donations such as bedding, food,
toys and second-hand clothes, which
she donates to the SPCA to sell in
their shop.
‘Anyone can do charity work. It is not
just if you are a model. Giving back to
the community in your own way, if it
is for children, the elderly or homeless
people is something one has to
consider.
‘It’s important for me to give back
to the animals because they also
deserve loving homes and attention.
Animals don’t have a voice and need
people to look after them. People
should realise that these shelters
for stray or injured animals need as
much help as they can from just
about everyone.’
Taking action with her gift
‘I plan my future day-by-day, working
to be an international model. My
dreams are becoming a reality.’
It is also one of her goals to study
journalism and work in the industry.
‘Modeling is something I want to
pursue for my future. I want to be a
part of different brands and be scouted
by different agents. My ultimate
dreams are to be a part of Victoria’s
Secret fashion shows and take part
in Paris, Milan and New York fashion
week,’ said Shannon.
She is preparing for the Project
Aim Convention at the end of next
month on the MSC cruise ship, where
she will meet agents from abroad to
sign modelling contracts.
‘I have also been doing jobs for a
client manufacturing the Kylie and
Kendall Jenner Africa clothing brand.
I have been showcasing the brand to
different buyers in South Africa.’
A message to others
‘I want to show the world that you
can achieve anything you put your
mind to. Dream, and dream big. Be
confident in what you do to prove to
others and yourself that you can do
what makes you happy.
‘When life gives you challenges or
doors close for you, remember that
opportunities will come your way.’
Matthew Evans takes food seriously, saying what you
buy, how you cook and what you eat impacts way
beyond your front door. The Real Food Companion
is a heafty book - more than 550 pages with 200-plus
recipes-the result of Matthew’s four decades as a chef,
food writer, and farmer, and multiple years’ research.
The information is extensive and enlightening - it’s like
the produce-driven recipes are simple, delicious and
unpretentious. And its core mission is teaching readers
how to ethically source, cook and eat real food. And,
Eating well(ness)
Plant based. It’s the new buzz word, and
it’s not going away. Nor should it. More
and more of us are choosing plant-based
diets and whole foods. Plant-based.
Vegetarian. Vegan. And even those who
are not going all the way, most of us
are cutting down on sugar, embracing
Meat Free Mondays, trying dairy-free
options, and cutting back on alcohol.
And since lowering stress is also high up
on our agenda, we’re all about taking the
easy-healthy way out. No time to cook or
prepare ... no excuse. The new Woolies
talking healthy but delish breakfasts like
Goji Berry and Beetroot Granola, quick
no-cook lunches like Roasted Butternut
dinners like PlantLove crumbed
black quinoa (crunchier and sweeter
than the red and white quinoa, it’s a
high protein-based grain with loads of
fiber and less fat), and the gluten-free
Yellow Lentil Pasta, which we tried with
Creamy Cheese Style Sauce, made with
fabulous sugar free flavoured sparkling
the coconut and pineapple one. All at
olive oil for drizzling (plus extra),
salt and pepper, 250g small mixed
tomatoes (halved), 1 large red
pepper (roughly chopped), about
300g courgettes (sliced into bite-size
chunks), 2 red onions (peeled and
cut into wedges), 2 rounds of feta,
sliced or kept whole, about half a cup
of kalamata olives,a handful of fresh
origanum leaves (or basil or mint), 1
teaspoon dried origanum, some red
wine vinegar, for drizzling (or fresh
lemon juice), a handful of baby salad
leaves (optional).
To make: Preheat the oven to 200°C.
baking paper, arrange the chicken
skin side up next to the tomatoes,
peppers, courgettes and red onions.
Drizzle all over with olive oil, then
season generously with salt and
through and the vegetables are
slightly charred, then remove from
the oven and leave to rest. Slice the
chicken and get ready to plate.
baby leaves, then top with the
sliced chicken breast, the roasted
vegetables, feta, olives and fresh
origanum. Sprinkle with dried
origanum, drizzle with more olive oil
all over and add a touch of red wine
vinegar, then serve at once (with
some crusty bread on the side).
ADVERTORIAL
Let’s toast to
avos
A celebration of the trendy and healthy avo
Over the years, foodies and consumers have been ‘adding an avo’ to
their meals. This year avos tick many of the boxes on the Everyday
Health Top 10 Healthy Food Trends list for 2023 as well!
One of the listed trends, ‘plants in more places’, encourages new
ways to eat fruits and veg. It cites an ‘upswing in the creative use
of vegetables and fruits as people strive to hit that five-a-day
recommendation. For example - using avocado in the place of butter.
Other trends in the report, where the avo is right at home, include:
‘more plant-based options’, ‘Mood-boosting foods’ and ‘food
for your gut’. ‘More plant-based options’ speaks to the growing
trend of people consciously choosing to eat less meat. As a result,
interest in meat alternatives and interesting fruit and vegetable
options is increasing across the globe. This is where avos come into
their own as an incredibly versatile fruit.
The ‘mood-boosting foods’ trend refers to feel-good foods that help
ward against depression and support brain health. Foods higher
in good fats may lower the risk of depression and anxiety and
considering one avocado contains 13g of healthy monounsaturated
fatty acids, there’s definitely a spot for them in that category!
New research has also shown that eating avos may benefit healthy
gut flora. This puts avos on the list as one of the good guys when it
comes to the ‘food for your gut’ trend as well. As you can see, there
are plenty reasons to ‘add an avo’ to your meals this year!
Avocado Halves,
White Bean and
Sundried Tomato Salad
Ingredients:
2 large ripe avocados, 30 ml (2 tbsp)
120 g / 250 ml (1 cup) pitted green olives
(finely chopped), 2 cloves garlic (grated),
60 ml (¼ cup) red wine vinegar, 1 chilli
diced (optional), 410 g can white beans
(drained), 120 g / 250 ml (1 cup) marinated
sundried tomato (chopped), 200 g cherry
tomatoes (rinsed), microgreens to garnish
Method:
remove the stones.
2. Place the oil, spring onions,
Herb of the month
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a calming herb that’s
also a delicious dessert herb, used for flavouring icecreams
and sorbet or added to fruit dishes and drinks. It
has a gentle lemon-mint fragrance and flavour that makes
a delicious tea, for sipping after dinner as a digestive or for
winding down after a busy day.
Lemon balm can be sown in summer through to autumn
and grows in sun or partial shade. The compact plants (30
to 40cm high) are also suitable for window boxes and
pots. It grows in ordinary garden soil, enriched with
spadefuls of compost or in good quality potting
soil. Feed pots monthly with a liquid fertiliser
like Margaret Roberts Organic Supercharger.
Space plants 30cm apart and pick the leaves
in the afternoon when its essential oils are the
strongest. Regular picking will produce a bushier,
leafier plant. It flowers in summer, producing small
white blossoms with sweet nectar that attracts the
bees, hence its scientific name. Melissa is Greek for
honeybee. Water it well during hot, dry weather.
Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
Did you know that
Melissa officinalis is a dog-friendly
herb? A mild infusion in their drinking
water helps dogs with digestive problems
and helps to calm those with separation
anxiety. It even reduces flatulence. Note: If
used for medicinal purposes check with
a reputable source for recipes
and dosage.
Garden tasks for March
• Start sowing autumn and winter veggies.
• This is the ideal month to sow sweet peas in well-prepared trenches 50cm deep. Those
sown now will flower in June.
• Other winter flowers that grow easily from seed are alyssum, African daisies (aka
Namaqualand daisies), Bokbaaivygies (mesembryanthemums), Linaria, poppies,
snapdragons, Virginian stocks, and indigenous winter colour mixes.
• Fertilise shrubs with 5:1:5 or 8:1:5 to strengthen them for winter. Water camellias and
azaleas regularly to encourage the development of spring buds.
• Keep your lawn green during winter by fertilising now with Ludwig’s Vigorosa and
water regularly.
Indoor plant of the month
Philodendron ‘Prince of Orange’ is a beautiful multi-coloured hybrid from South
America. The new leaves emerge as golden orange, mature to copper and finally
turn green, with the three colours always present on the plant. It is relatively slow
growing and compact (up to 60cm high) which makes it perfect for smaller
spaces. To make the most of its colours, position it to receive plenty of bright,
indirect light. It can also take some filtered morning sun. Like all philodendron,
‘Prince of Orange’ likes moist but not wet soil. Water only after the top 3cm of
soil has dried. Feed once a month with a liquid fertiliser to encourage large
leaves. Rotate every now for a balanced plant. Details: lvgplant.co.za
#trending
Last year we eased back into normalcy. And these trends dominated
when it came to home decor ... ones that will continue to grow throughout 2023
Before we get wrapped up in the
go, go, go of living, we should take
some time to pause and reflect on
some of the design and decor trends
that shaped last year, trends that will
strongly influence our decor decisions
this year. After two and a half years of
being masked up and locked down,
2022 was the year of easing back into
normalcy. We unmasked, and started
to venture back to the office, shops
and schools and even gathered again
with family and friends. Despite things
being business as usual, we are only
now beginning to properly understand
the real impact that the pandemic
has had on our psyche and in turn,
our design and decor choices. Interior
designer, behaviour specialist, and
owner of a design studio, Kim Williams
explains how many of the design and
decor trends have been influenced by
our most recent experiences.
Health and healing
There has been a huge emphasis on mental health and wellness, with our
homes acting as a tranquil sanctuary to escape from the chaos and confusion
of the outside world. Our living space can have a dramatic impact on our wellbeing
and energy, promoting a desire for not just peace and privacy but also
grounding, healing, and spirituality. There has been a strong move towards warm
and natural palettes that are soothing but also mystical and engaging, with the
addition of comforting fabrics and textures to add layers of interest. We have also
seen a lot of deepened healing – which focuses on balancing masculine and
feminine tones to ensure that the interior space is meditatively balanced and
promotes healing for all.
Less is more
After having had to wear masks for so long, it made sense that we had a greater
desire to be heard and seen during 2022. And although we saw a greater emphasis
on the embracing of different voices, cultures, and individual interests when it
comes to decor choices, it is important to note that the minimalist movement is
still very much in vogue. Less is always more, as is the yearning to shop for locally
sourced materials, such as rattan, wood, stone, and weaves. Glass objects and
translucent furniture also help reflect light and engage the eye.
Looking ahead
This is going to be the year for exploring depth, especially when it comes to
deepened healing. These trends will continue, but with greater consideration of
the impact they have on us and our surroundings. And after being cocooned
in a grey world for so long, we should also look forward to the return of bright
colours as the world bursts back to life.
The value of zoning
Lots of us are still working from home this year, which has crafted a new
appreciation for space, the privilege of having it and a deeper desire to connect
better with it. Larger families especially require separate living areas to work and
recharge, as well as a communal place to energise and socialise, and a dedicated
corner to play. This dilemma has forced designers to look at zoning areas off
to create better fluidity, energy, and balance. Both commercial and residential
property owners are investing in ways to make their spaces flow and work better,
not just because it creates a better user experience but because it is likely to
increase property values.
The return of the dining room
A separate dining room that flows off either the living or kitchen area has made
a huge comeback. During the pandemic, the dinner table was the centre of
the home ... doubling up as a classroom, office desk and even a place for family
entertainment. Now, it is a vehicle to bring loved ones together, especially during
the summer entertaining season - a space that facilitates easy conversation and
connection around a delicious meal. Well-designed dining rooms can create an
ambiance and atmosphere that are both casual and formal depending on the
occasion. The most engaging tables are rectangular or round with comfortable,
simple-to-clean seating and enough space for easy movement. Lighting is
functional, with elevated table scaping used to ramp up the mood and feel.
Reconnecting
with nature
Our desire for sustainability and
eco-conscious design has been
huge and will probably continue
well into 2023. It has been amazing
to witness the massive move
towards recycling and repurposing.
A lot of the younger generation,
especially, have been bringing old
memories from past generations to
life by adding their own stamp and
aesthetic to create beautiful quilts
and wall hangings, for example.
Being conscious of our planet is
not just about opting for greener
materials in our decor choices but
also bringing mindfulness into
the entire design process. In these
warmer summer months, the trend
of opening the indoor and outdoor
space is more apparent. Not only
does this provide a wonderful
connection to nature but it also
extends our living space, adds more
natural light, and allows for fresh air
and the sounds of flowing water to
breeze through the entire home.

behind her name. She is also about to add another accolade - a scholarship at the
Orlando Ballet Company and School in Florida, USA. Scarlett Schutte sure is
taking the world of dancing by storm.
Dancing has always been her passion,
and devoting her afternoons
to countless hours of dance training
and discipline is one thing she loves
dearly. Scarlett has been dancing
since the age of eight, where she
experimented with various genres
throughout her journey. She started
with freestyle but soon realised
that performing arts is where her
passion lies.
We catch up with this teenager to
find out where her drive for success
comes from.
On a personal note
Scarlet Schutte grew up in Bedfordview,
Johannesburg, as the eldest of
two children in a loving and supportive
family.
‘I have a young sister called Seinna.
She is a wonderful person on the
inside and out, and I am grateful to
have her as a sister. Fortunately, my
father is one of those fathers who
considers dancing a sport and fully
supports me 1000%. Above all, my
mum is my rock, my day one, and my
best friend. She is the reason I never
give up on my dreams and who I
am today.’
Her mother used to do Latin American
dancing when she was younger
and she was the one who got
Scarlett into dancing.
‘I just can’t imagine doing anything
else.’
International victory
She holds numerous national and
international awards. To name a few:
World Champion - Dance Star Croatia
2018 in the Open Section; IDO World
passion
entry into the finals in Italy in July
2023; Broadway Dance Centre New
York Scholarship Recipient 2022, and
Tanec Bez Hiranic Scholarship 2022.
‘My first international victory makes
me the proudest. In the Shakespeare
Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon,
England, I won the U10 lyrical solo
section. I’m most proud of this one
because it was my first world champion
title and I did it in front of my
entire family, which I’m sure made
them proud as well! I also recently
won the Ballet Repertoire section
at the IDO World Championships in
Slovenia in December 2022.
In December 2021, she competed in a competition called California Dance
Classics and she was also awarded a scholarship to Orlando Ballet Company
and School for 2022.
‘However, we were not able to secure my visa in time and the ballet school was
so gracious to let the scholarship carry over till 2023.’
Scarlett had to resubmit her scholarship video and was notified that she has
been awarded her scholarship again for June 26 to July 28 and her visa is
in place.
Orlando Ballet Company and School is one of the Top 20 ballet schools in the
USA and only dancers with a high degree of technical training get accepted.
She is one of the first South African dancers to be afforded this opportunity.
An opportunity like no other
With her visa in hand, and almost time to jet off to Orlando Ballet Company and
School in Florida, Scarlet is ready for this opportunity of a lifetime.
‘I have a few years left of dancing before I decide to make a career out of it. I
have to use it wisely. These opportunities are amazing and to be able to go and
participate in them would be a dream come true. The friendships and networking
will be priceless.’
She hopes to learn more about ballet in general and to gather as much information
as possible.
‘To be able to be in the presence of an international choreographer/teacher is
always something you must make the most of. And of course, you simply have
to gain a lot of life experience!’
Her trip’s impact on her normal day-to-day life in South Africa is under control
because she believes her school, Helpmekaar Kollege, has a very good system
in place for learners to take advantage of amazing opportunities abroad.
‘They are extremely helpful, and all academic systems are in place for when
I return.’
Dancing and training six to seven days a week must present some challenges,
as one may tend to avoid socialising, but for Scarlett, this is not a problem
because she makes time to socialise with friends and family.
‘Fortunately, because I attend a mainstream school, I get to see my classmates.
I have dancing buddies. Outside of school and dancing, my friends will always
make an effort to see me on weekends, preferably in the afternoon. After
school and dancing, I spend time with my family. My teachers at Eborall Melville
De Witt and Shablam Dance Academy are extremely encouraging!’
Lend a helping hand
She shares with us the details of her BackaBuddy campaign to help raise funds
for her trip
‘We decided to do a BackaBuddy campaign because of the large outlay to stay
there for five weeks. Although my class tuition is covered by the scholarship, my
housing and meals are not. Flights are also expensive. We decided to launch
the BackaBuddy campaign because I have a lot of opportunities abroad and
we, or rather my family, simply can’t keep up!
‘I hope the community can help me achieve my goals! They can go to www.
backabuddy.co.za and search for my campaign – Get Scarlett to Orlando Ballet.
Donations in any way, shape or form will be appreciated.’
What the future holds
At 15, she has thought about her future many times but she changes her
mind frequently.
‘Now, the more I think, the closer I am leaning towards a decision, but would
like to keep the arts in my future somehow.’
Her ultimate goal as a dancer would be to join a ballet company. She is most
interested in American businesses because she admires their work.
‘If my dream does not come true, I hope to begin my studies in medicine and
specialise as a paediatrician.’
A message to teens
‘When it starts getting extremely hard and you feel like giving up, never ever
do so! Giving up on your dreams and goals is the biggest mistake you will ever
make. It is super important to keep your eyes on the goal and never look back
or doubt yourself!’
Hey babe ...
Help for new mums
A new babe. Congrats. Such an exciting time. But for firsttime
mums, often a little daunting. It’s a personal journey
... to breastfeed or to share the feeding process with a
partner, or a combination of the two. To offer a soother or
not. So many decisions as you figure out the best way of
doing things for you and your baby. Whichever you decide,
there’s a gadget to help ... here are some of the best on the
baby shelves.
This Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump mimics a baby’s
natural feeding movement for pumping that is simple, fast
and gentle. Research shows that babies use a peristaltic
movement, which is a special, wave-like tongue motion,
to help release milk quickly when breastfeeding, a motion
replicated by this pump, which uses a combination of
suction and unique nipple stimulation to mimic a suckling
motion, initiating milk let down for a comfortable and
quicker milk flow. Loads of great features,
including a personalised experience
and memory function, one size soft
and adaptive silicone cushion
and express without
leaning forward.
R3900.
When it’s
time for
baby’s next
feed, the
Phillips
Avent Bottle
Warmer
gently warms
their milk or
food in three
minutes,
gradually and
continuously to prevent hotspots. The easy to operate
warmer also has a handy defrost setting (safer than
defrosting in a microwave and more convenient than using
water). R1580.50
Sterilising. Bottles. Dummies. Toys. New mums are obsessed.
So say hello to the Philips Avent Advanced Electric
Sterilizer, with which you can sterilise up to six feeding
bottles with accessories in just 10 minutes. It’s slim but
roomy, fast and efficient, and kills 99.9 per cent of germs
(phew .... sigh of relief from mum). It’s also easy to clean, is
designed to reduce the chance of unpleasant odours and
stays sterile for 24 hours. R3020.20
Each to his own, but we’re firm believers in soothers. The
Philips Avent Ultra Air collection has extra-large holes
to keep skin dry. Its lightweight shield is designed for
maximum airflow. It’s easy to find in the dark, respects the
shape of palate, teeth, and gums, comes in fashionable
colours and you can sterilse and store it in one handy
case. For babes up to 18 months, R180.95 to R232.60 for a
The importance of gut health
Over the past decade, probiotics
have become one of the fastest
growing sectors of the natural health
market. But why do we actually
need them? And what benefits do
they have for children? The team
from Rawbiotics, one of SA’s leading
liquid probiotic range of products
who provide fermented, non-freezedried
probiotics to families, explains
why a healthy gut is arguably the
most important factor in your child’s
overall health.
The bacteria in your bowels
outnumber the cells in your body
by 10 to one. This gut flora has
incredible power over the immune
system, meaning that the health
of the body is largely tied into the
health of the gut. Beneficial bacteria
are responsible for the body’s ability
to use the nutrition in food. They are
responsible for the production of
vitamins and fatty acids. They stop the
build-up of disease-causing bacteria
and harmful yeasts - such as Candida.
And they produce natural antibiotics.
In fact, one could say that no matter
how good your diet is, or no matter
what supplements you take, the
ability of your body to use them is
firstly dependent on the health of the
bacteria in your gut.
When it comes to your children,
beneficial bacteria are vital in the
formative years of the body, ensuring
good nutrition, immunity and
growth. But another vital (and often
overlooked) factor is that the gut
plays a major role in one’s emotions,
concentration and judgement…so
much so that it has been nicknamed
the second brain. Emotional stress,
poor concentration, poor sleeping
habits and general unhappiness
are all factors which can very often
be linked to bacterial imbalances in
the digestive tract, and which can
often be resolved through fixing
that imbalance.
When choosing a probiotic for your
children there are two general types
of probiotic. Liquid (live fermented)
probiotics are produced using a wide
range of beneficial bacteria that are
grown together, and compete among
each other, to form the final product.
They are the most natural form of
bacteria since the conditions in which
they are grown mirror the conditions
inside the human body. Encapsulated
(freeze-dried) probiotics are much
easier to produce and store, however,
and so make up most of the probiotic
market. Encapsulated probiotics
will also typically have high counts
of Colony Forming Units (CFU’s) to
ensure that enough bacteria reach
the gut to be effective. With liquid
probiotics, however, very high counts
of CFU’s are usually not needed as
the microbes have been grown in
conditions similar to those in the
body and are not killed off on their
way through to the gut.
Whichever you prefer, the fact remains
that ensuring a balanced digestive
tract, along with a good diets, are the
first steps in ensuring that you have
healthy and happy children.
FAMILY FUN
If you love all things nature-inspired, Summer is the best time to get your family involved
in your downtime activities – from hikes, to cycling adventures and running trails.
When planning your next outdoor
activity with the family, the most
important thing is to be organised
and prepared, plus have the right gear
to make things efficient and easy on
the day. It won’t be long before you
realise that bringing your kids along is
one of the best ways to enjoy quality
time together and explore the beauty
of the outdoors.
Thule has a range of premium
products that allow you and your
family to fully immerse yourselves in
your favourite outdoor activity.
Here’s a roundup of must-have gear
for your next adventure:
For the cyclists…
Exploring the great outdoors on two
wheels is fast becoming a popular
choice among families, and whether
you’re planning on taking in a coastline
or cycling along the Garden Route,
bike trailers and bike seats open up
the possibilities for pedal powered
adventures with the family.
The smart, intuitive and award-winning
designs of the Thule rear child bike
seats and front-mounted baby bike
seats include features like quick and
secure mounting and dismounting –
and will give you and your precious
passenger a safe, easy, and enjoyable
ride. As your child grows, you can also
conveniently adjust the foot straps and
foot rests.
Thule bike trailers are perfect for family
commutes or fun weekend bike trips,
the Thule Courier even switches from a
child bike trailer to a bike cargo trailer, or
a dog bike trailer with an optional kit.
Top Tip: Before you start cycling with
your little one in a bike seat or trailer
practise without them. Make sure you
are confident on your bike, and get
some miles under your belt.
Details: thulestore.co.za
For the hikers…
If you prefer hiking, an innovative child carrier backpack that at once gives your
little one a great view and a comfortable and secure ride is a must.
The adjustable Thule Sapling Child Carrier features an ergonomic seat and
distributes the child’s weight, while the back panel and hip belt are quick and easy
to adjust and effortlessly transitions between parents – a lifesaver on longer hikes.
Top Tip: For added peace of mind, you might want to consider a child carrier that
comes with a mirror and allows you to keep an eye on your precious cargo, as well
as a rain cover to ensure that your little one stays dry.
For the trail runners…
Running with your kids can be rewarding and challenging all in one. From
adjusting to the new routine of changing your stride to figuring out how to hold
the handlebar efficiently, to adding some weight as you push the pace uphill,
there are lots of things to consider when beginning to jog with your child.
Thule’s Urban Glide is high performance all-terrain jogging stroller with a sleek,
lightweight design that is all about comfort for you and your little one. The front
wheel swivels for easy manoeuverability, plus locks into place for jogging for
increased stability, when moving at a fast pace.
Top Tips: When it comes to buying your jogging stroller, safety is first. Don’t settle
for anything less than the highest standards when it comes to design, flexibility,
safety and quality. Look for features such as a 5-point safety harness and an
integrated hand brake.
Pack lots of water and snacks! A water bottle is a must for any bike ride. Even if
riding in a bike trailer isn’t physically active, kids still need plenty of fluids to stay
cool and to replace the water they lose through sweating.
African island
paradise
Nestled on the banks of the mighty Zambezi,
we explore the beauty, tranquillity and luxury wilderness
adventure that is Tsowa Safari Island.
The sound of the birds and the rustle
of our feet trampling on fallen leaves
and branches seems to quieten as we
turn the corner and come face-to-face
with a majestic, hundreds-of-yearold
baobab tree. It’s an extraordinary
feeling, standing in front of one of
these beauties for the first time in
your life. Even more so when it’s on
a little paradise island nestled on the
banks of the mighty Zambezi River.
Text: Leah Shone
A WILDERNESS ADVENTURE
As we continued to walk, mesmerised,
around the enormous trunk of this
‘tree of life’, we were delighted to see
a table set up with champagne and
orange juice, especially for us, to toast
this special occasion.
This island bush walk was just one of
the many activities we experienced
while visiting Isibindi Africa Lodge’s
remarkable Tsowa Safari Island near
Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
True safari luxury, Tsowa is a little piece
of heaven and by far one of the most
carefully thought out and sustainably
designed lodges we’ve ever visited.
With eight, beautifully appointed luxury tents, Tsowa is the perfect retreat for
modern day adventurers who enjoy immersing themselves in the surrounding
wilderness.
Our hosted group had arrived the day before after quick flights from Durban to
Joburg and then Joburg to Victoria Falls airport, followed by a one-and-a-halfhour
trip (including road transfer, a 4x4 game drive and a 10-minute boat ride).
It didn’t take long for us to unwind and embrace the tranquillity and solitude this
exclusive getaway offers and the intermittent cell phone signals soon started to
feel like a blessing as we sipped our ice-cold sundowners alongside the Zambezi
while watching a large bloat of hippo play and honk nearby.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
After dinner on our first night, sitting under magnificent stars
with the fire crackling and eerie sounds of leopard calling in the
distance from the mainland just across the water, lodge manager
Eric Maruhwa shared a bit about Tsowa's interesting history.
The true magic of this luxurious wilderness lodge, it seems, is the
passion and heart that went into its design and creation. Isibindi
Africa Lodges founders Brett and Paige Gehren took their time
deciding where to place the lodge on this private uninhabited
island, even 'bush camping' on various sites before deciding
where each luxurious tent would be placed.
Of utmost importance to them was that the property be built
with respect to nature and that it blended in as much as possible
with the natural environment. There are no cement foundations.
The riverbank was not disturbed during construction and trees
were built around, preserved and incorporated into the lodge's
architecture. You really feel like you are engulfed in the heart of
this natural habitat.
SHEER SAFARI LUXURY
Each incredibly comfortable (and sizable) tent is a luxurious
safari haven hidden under the tree canopy with all the amenities
you would expect from a lodge of this calibre. Think indoor and
outdoor showers, bar fridges, stylish finishes and fabulous views.
Absolute heaven.
The packages are almost entirely 'all-inclusive', with delicious
meals, snacks and drinks included. Every night we dined like
kings … three-course meals (cooked in front of us), served with a
selection of top South African wines.
Because it is small and intimate, Tsowa also offers incredible
flexibility in terms of meal times and activities … you can be as
busy or as 'slow' as you would like to be. And alluring as lazing
around the sparkling pool with a book sounds, the activities
available are well worth exploring!
Included in each stay are guided island bush walks, game drives,
bird watching, river cruises and fishing. Additional charges apply
for guided game walks and canoeing (no kids under 16 allowed),
as well as day trips to Victoria Falls or Chobe National Park.
We enjoyed a magnificent game drive in the Zambezi National
Park, as well as a thrilling canoe adventure on the Zambezi
(complete with crocs and hippo all around us!).
The birdlife, both migratory and indigenous, is prolific and Tsowa
has become a popular destination for birders who are looking to
tick off some 'firsts' on their sightings list.
After a few nights spent on this remarkable piece of paradise, the
lovely staff waved us off as we jumped into the boat and sailed
towards the mainland to catch our transfer back to the airport.
Needless to say, it was hard to integrate back into the 'real world'
after spending a few days on this exquisite, remote African island ...
but that is all the more reason to start planning a trip back soon!
Safari luxury at it’s absolute finest
There are both indoor and outdoor
showers in all of the luxury tents
Things you need to know before you book your stay…
Minimum stay of two nights (three-night stays include a trip
to Vic Falls). No children under 12 years. Guests are transferred
from the airport in closed, air-conditioned vehicles to a private
entrance to the Zambezi National Park, and then in an open
4x4 vehicle to the river’s edge, followed by a quick boat trip
across to the island. Rates (which are around $485 - $580 US,
per person, per night) exclude flights, road transfer, park fees
and Isibindi Foundation levies. Details: res@isibindi.co.za, www.
