Jardín de la Marquesa de Arucas:
a magical garden for nature lovers
The Gran Canaria municipality of Arucas is home to a natural
treasure known only to a precious few: the impressive gardens
called Jardín de la Marquesa de Arucas. This botanical paradise
is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
The gardens date back to the 1880s, when the first Marquis
of Arucas began to collect a wide variety of plant species on
his travels, both endemic and from abroad, to decorate the
gardens of his summer palace. With the passing of time, and
thanks to the region’s warm and favourable climate, this garden
became a truly magical place, fascinating all those who
visited it.
Subsequent generations of the Marquis' family continued to
add to this botanical paradise, and today, La Marquesa has
more than 500 catalogued plant species. In 1985, this green
oasis opened its doors to the public, offering guided tours
through its narrow, romantic-style corridors and its impressive
mansion, which has a blue basalt stone façade typical of the
Arucas area.
The Jardín de la Marquesa de Arucas is a place of unparalleled
diversity, packed with trees, plants and, above all, a large number
of palm trees, which have managed to adapt and develop
thanks to the island’s climate. Visitors are treated to some
highly valuable species, such as several dragon trees that are
more than 200 years old. In addition, visitors have the opportunity
to admire dozens of peacocks in the wild.
The botanical garden is an idyllic location, far away from the
everyday world and in total communion with nature. The
glassed-in marquee and the long green aisles foster romance
and warmth. No wonder this magical setting has been used in
countless Hollywood films. The Jardín de la Marquesa de Arucas
should, without a doubt, be top of the list of places to visit
when coming to Gran Canaria.
