The eKasi Wine Tasting & Music Festival is heading

A night of 

endless fun 

Having fun while spreading the love was the mandate for the 

Martie du Plessis Valentine’s dance this year. The Grade 10 to 12s 

all showed up in their best outfits and 

dancing shoes. The evening was made possible by the Parents 

Committee, who went the extra mile to ensure that the 

night was extra special for the learners. 

The deco, music and lights were done by Envie’s Tony Peng, 

who sponsored a part of the evening. 

The learners enjoyed every second of the ball 

and danced the night away.

Amaker of things 

“If it involves creativity I want to know all 

about it – from filming and photography 

to printmaking, journal making, pottery, 

quilting, and more – I love all it all,” she 

says. 

She feels that she needs more hours in 

a day and more days in her lifetime so 

that she can create more things. “It feels 

as though my ideas far outweigh my 

capacity to create, so even if I created 

non-stop every day, at some point, I 

would still run out of time and that 

breaks my heart.” 

She says as a little girl she just wanted to 

be a mom, so much so that in matric she 

was voted “Most likely to have a station 

wagon full of kids”. 

“As I got older my passion for art 

grew, but being a mom was always 

my number one priority. Denis always 

encouraged me to make more time for 

art and I resisted because that seemed 

so unimportant – it was always the 

very last thing on my list, a luxury. By 

the time baby number six had arrived I 

was starting to feel a deep need to do 

something to nurture myself more. That 

was the start of this new chapter,” she 

says. 

In 2018, she started to evaluate why 

she had so much resistance to doing 

something just for herself – “without any 

purpose or service to my family,” she says. 

She adds that it has been a journey of 

reinvention and self-discovery. 

multi-passionate 

Claudette Hasenjager is a local Bloemfontein artist, a wife to Denis, and a mom to six 

beautiful kids. Tracey is the oldest at eighteen years old. She has two younger brothers 

– Vadim is fifteen years old and Johann is eleven years old. The little ones are Ondine, 

Olivia and Summer, aged nine, seven, and five. Claudette describes herself 

as a multi-passionate maker of things. 

On the 1st of September 2018, Claudette 

started her very first #365emptysquares 

project. “I created a collage a day for the 

full 365 days – I never missed a day – I 

was all in and I haven’t stopped creating 

ever since.” 

In 2019, she met an American artist, 

Char de Rouin, and they quickly became 

art besties online. She says they were 

looking for a way to collaborate on an art 

project together but could not do so via 

the postal service. “We decided that we 

would each create an art journal and fill 

half the pages, then mail the journals to 

each other and fill the other half of the 

journal weekly on YouTube. 

This is how her channel started. Since 

then, they have collaborated on multiple 

YouTube projects and have slowly grown 

their channels. “Last year, I decided I 

wanted to take YouTube more seriously 

and work on the Year of Courage project 

in collaboration with Get Messy Art.” 

The focus of her YouTube channel is 

mostly art journaling and inspiring 

others to push the boundaries of their 

own creativity by challenging how they 

interoperate prompts and supplies. “This 

year I hope to stretch myself even further 

by starting to create more weekly studio 

vlog videos, so the growing and learning 

continues.” 

Claudette describes her family life as 

“full and noisy” and she loves it that 

way. “Being a family of eight means 

that everything is amplified – our poor 

neighbours! But it also means that we 

have the best stories because there are 

so many to share. Because Denis and I 

work from home and we home-school 

our children I think we have a very closeknit 

family and the children have strong 

sibling bonds, which is something Denis 

and I really wanted to foster within the 

family.” 

She says her kids are a source of endless 

inspiration. “The way they see the world 

and express themselves is so unique and 

so refreshing. Being able to experience 

how different each of the children are 

is fascinating. Watching them grow and 

develop their own style and personality 

within the same family is fascinating. 

They all have such strong individual 

voices – it makes for interesting 

conversation – and I am here for it.” 

When Claudette and Denis are not 

home working or with the kids they 

enjoy running together. “For us running 

is all about having uninterrupted time 

together to chat, joke, dream, plan and 

just catch up.” 

They reserved Saturdays for their long 

runs and plan these around coffee spots. 

“Every week we decide on where we 

would like to have breakfast and then 

plan our route around that. This means 

we get to try out all the places in Bloem 

while getting in a run. It’s a win all 

around.” 


As I got older my 

passion for art grew, but 

being a mom was always my 

number one priority.

I view my role in a learner’s life 

as necessary, not just someone 

that is there because they are 

supposed to be doing their job. I 

strive to at least find one reason 

every day to be happy and all this 

led me to be an educator, being 

the one good reason a child can 

smile today. 


Putting the joy 

back in learning 

During the pandemic, the notion of a 

classroom and the role of a teacher 

transformed like never before and Joy 

Addams rose to the challenge. Having 

decided to open up her home in 2020 for 

learners who weren’t coping with their 

school work, she has since made strides to 

help learners post-pandemic. 

“I decided to open up an After Care 

where we assist with homework and extra 

classes because the phone calls from parents came flooding in from the time 

I started offering an extra hand, and above all it also has become a safe and 

happy place for learners.” 

As a true believer of serving others, whether friends or family, she views every 

learner at Joyful Aftercare as her own and goes the extra mile to support her 

role as their teacher. 

“I make sure that I know and understand their backgrounds first to 

understand their behavioural patterns, I then find a mutual ground of interest 

for the both of us and then, voila, we have an unbreakable bond. 

“I adapt the curriculum to the modern way of their thinking abilities. Using 

the latest apps as teaching tools because they’re so interested in social media 

and technology. So, by the time they realise they’re actually doing school 

work, they’re already done with a proper lesson and they understand it.” 

She focuses more on the ages of 7 to 13, as she views these as the most 

important stages because that is where routine and consistency can be 

developed. 

“Starting them off at their age allows for them to reach high school with a 

set routine to strive and do better personally and in their academics. We also 

strive to teach them that no matter what you take on, as long as you are 

consistent, results will show.” 

Her advice as a teacher to others: “First understand yourself and what type 

of teacher you want to be and what you want to achieve with your learners 

because knowing what you want and how you want it to be done, makes it 

easier to understand your learners.” 

“Teaching allows me to change the world, one child at a time, and my 

biggest dream for the future is to own a school, starting from a daycare right 

up to grade 7.”

Madalane Peyper 

Meet the iconic woman 

leading the property industry 

Born and raised in the small town of Odendaalsrus 

in the Free State, Madalane Peyper went to school 

at Wessel Maree and later continued studying BA 

Human Movement Science with Psychology at the 

University of the Free State. 

After obtaining her degree she decided to study 

B Proc at Unisa. She wanted to be able to help 

people in more of an advocacy role than she could 

as a psychologist. Law seemed a good fit and she 

took a bit of a leap of faith. Whilst studying, she 

worked as a secretary at a law firm in Welkom, 

where she also became a director. After a good 

number of years of work in the Goldfields, Peyper 

Attorneys was born in 2004 and 14 years ago, 

Bloemfontein became her home. 

Madalane is a dynamic and caring woman, 

synonymous with conveyancing and property law. 

If you meet her, you immediately realise how she 

can walk the extra mile and make everyone feel 

special in her presence. As a mom, business owner, 

and friend, she juggles her different roles with style 

and dedication. 

Her motto in life is, “Love your family, work super 

hard and live your passion. Be impeccable in your 

work. Quality work is your responsibility.” 

After being one of the Founder Directors of 

Peyper Attorneys for 18 years, Madalane set out 

to establish her own truly one-of-a-kind law

• Sieve the flour, salt, and paprika together. 

• Add the grated baby marrow and cheese to it 

and mix with a spatula or wooden spoon. 

• Add the egg and milk and mix well. 

• Divide the batter between the 6 muffin cups. 

• Bake for 15-20 minutes.

After working in the public sector for 12 years, Dr Riana 

van Zyl recently joined the private sector as a healthcare 

practitioner, specialising as a Paediatrician 

at Mediclinic Bloemfontein.

According to Dr Van Zyl, joining the Mediclinic family has been amazing so far. 

“The support has been great. The hospital staff is here to help me and make 

sure I find my feet and get acquainted with everyone in the hospital. It has 

been a wonderful experience so far.” 

This mother of two young girls, says working in the private sector is indeed 

very different to the public sector but she is enjoying the challenges and is 

very excited about the journey ahead. 

Dr Van Zyl’s internship is what led her to the field of Paediatrics. “I developed 

a passion for the little ones during my internship and community service. 

At that stage, the HIV roll-out was in its beginning stage. The children were really sick, 

and it was a journey that the Lord took me on. I felt a calling to work with HIV-infected 

children,” said Dr Van Zyl. 

She is very passionate about the first 1000 days of a child’s life. This is from conception 

up until the child’s second birthday. “This is a crucial time in a child’s life and it 

lays the foundation for their health and overall well-being later in life. If we can 

optimise growth and development during this stage, we can set them up for a 

healthy and successful life,” she said. 

“As a parent, you want your child to be healthy and if you can prevent them 

from getting sick, you would do whatever you can.” Dr Van Zyl emphasised 

that immunisations are a vital tool to help prevent diseases and lower 

morbidity and mortality. 

“The available immunisations have been well researched and they are for 

diseases that occur commonly, but also diseases that could cause severe 

illness.” She added that the available vaccines are safe and have proven to 

eradicate diseases, such as Polio. 

“Especially with winter around the corner, it is important to ensure your 

child’s immunisations are up to date. Also, getting the annual influenza 

immunisation ‘flu-shot’ is something that must go onto your to-do list. It 

is recommended for children from the age of 6 months and older.” 

“Working with children brings a very positive energy. If they’re ill you 

can tell they are genuinely ill, and once they are better, they show 

it! Paediatrics is something you get called to do because it can get 

really hard. People often say they could never do it because you have 

to see children suffer, but if you can make a difference in a child’s life, 

it is truly so rewarding.”

introduce a newly added brand to the shelves of her store. 

According to Rebecca, she has always wanted to start a brand 

that is specifically aimed at moms and babies as she believes that 

the best gifts in life are marriage and babies. 

This is where the idea for Adorables 4 Little Princes & Princesses 

was birthed. Their Mauve range is designed by Maude in 

Dubai and is made up of 95% Bamboo and 5% spandex while 

the authentic side is made up of hand-crafted unique items, 

crocheted, knitted, and sewn – from baby mobiles, toys, 

gorgeous clothing, and special heirloom blankets. 

From here Rebecca opened her door to more baby brands 

like Piekanienies Sewing for Kids, which is owned by Anneli 

Swanepoel, who custom-makes clothing for children. “She is 

a young girl who makes the most adorable little outfits for 

kids,” says Rebecca. She adds that Anneli will also be adding a 

handcrafted range for premature babies to her collection soon. 

The newest edition to the Yarn Stash family is Baby Blanche, 

owned by Lené Askew. Baby Blanche is an exclusive, boutiquestyled 

range with clothing handpicked by Lené. She says what 

makes her items unique is the fact that she only keeps a few 

of each item in stock, making it extremely exclusive. “I can walk 

around in the mall and spot if a baby is wearing any of my pieces, 

that’s how exclusive it is.” 

Lené also says that the name is inspired by her grandmother and 

means ‘pure’ in French. 

Rebecca and Lené have joined forces to not only provide moms 

with the best clothing items for their children, but to create an 

environment and safe space for moms from all walks of like. 

In doing so, Rebecca hosts several informative and fun videos 

with everyday moms, hosts workshops for moms, and so much

App will provide teens with 

mental health support 

Due to the rise of mental health issues among teens, Panda has launched ‘Panda for Teens’ – 

a safe space for youth to receive mental health support. 

The Panda app provides a safe and 

anonymous space for teenagers aged 

16 and above to find communitybased 

and professional support, share 

their thoughts and feelings with those 

of a similar age, and access a wide 

range of mental health resources. 

“All the existing features in the Panda 

app will also be available to teenagers, 

including a comprehensive library of 

mental health resources and the ability 

to schedule one-on-one sessions 

with a registered professional. They 

will have the added benefit of being 

able to attend and participate in forest 

sessions dedicated to teen-specific 

issues,” says Allan Sweidan, Chief 

Science Officer of the Panda app. 

“The shame attached to suicide 

is primarily why young people do 

not come forward to talk about 

the troubling thoughts they are 

experiencing until it is too late. Behind 

every suicidal thought, attempt 

and another form of self-harm is a 

cry for help,” says Mandisa Mtembu, 

a registered counsellor. “We need 

to normalise becoming aware of 

emotions and their impact from 

as early as primary school. These 

conversations need to happen 

at home, at school, and on other 

platforms like Panda, that are available 

to our youth and are safe to use.” 

In light of Teen Suicide Prevention 

Week, Mtembu hosted a forest 

session on 12 February, which took 

place on the Panda app. The session, 

“What to do if a teenager you know 

is struggling with their mental health 

and how to communicate effectively 

with them”, was specifically aimed 

at helping young people, parents, 

guardians, and educators navigate 

how to deal with teens who show 

signs of suicidal thoughts and 

behaviour.

Why go solo? 

Travel with friends ... to the De Mond Villa in the De Hoop Nature Reserve 

One of the joys of travel is to do so with a group of family or friends.

latest find is the newly restored and refurbished De Mond Villa in the 

extraordinarily beautiful De Hoop Nature Reserve. 

This pristine nature reserve, a Ramsar listed vlei, is all wide open spaces, 

endless stretches of deserted beaches, coastal fynbos, teaming with 

animal and bird life and offers the best whale watching imaginable. 

The reserve is home to the De Hoop Collection, which has a wide range 

of accommodation, including various self-catering options as well as 

the De Mond Villa. With five en-suite bedrooms, awesome interior décor, 

incredible views, a boma and swimming pool, it’s a really brilliant option 

for those looking to really get away from it all. It’s fully catered, so all you 

need do is sit, G&T in hand, and look out over the glorious Ramsar vlei, 

where besides the spectacular bird life, you could spot wild bush pigs, 

otters, rock dassies and herds of eland ... there’s even been sightings of 

leopard tracks. 

You’ll have an exclusive guide, and most guided activities are included 

in the rate ... think guided bird walks, marine walks, mountain bike trails, 

and a nature drive experience in an open safari vehicle. Not included 

(but well worth the extra expense) are the eco boat cruise and the 

vulture experience. 

Another add on you may be interested in is the new De Hoop Slackpacking 

Trail ... a fully guided and catered three-to-five-night hike for 

groups of up to 10, which will take in parts of the iconic whale trail and

Whale watching 

Time your trip for end May to 

early November, when, every 

year, some 40 per cent of the 

world’s Southern Right Whales 

come to these shores to breed. 

Females and their calves swim 

in the clear waters, while males 

put on spectacular displays. 

Up to 600 of these endangered 

mammals come each season ... 

so close to the shore that you 

can sit relax on the sand dunes, 

watching them calve, blow, 

breach and belly flop. 

The Vulture Experience 

The cliffs of the Potberg 

Mountain is home to the 

Western Cape’s last surviving 

colony of endangered Cape 

Vultures. Guests take a scenic 

drive through the fynbos, then 

hike for around an hour up to 

the Vulture Deck to watch the 

vultures swoop and soar above.
