Christo, Christof, Marché and Lila Swanepoel

Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY. Photographers: LIZ PHOTOGRAPHY and BELINDA ERASMUS
SKIN
DEEP
Petite Marché Swanepoel embodies the spirt of the
Lowveld as she breezes in on a glorious late autumn
afternoon, comfortable and relaxed, waiting for her
husband and children to join her.
Marché, who grew up on the family
farm between Pongola and Piet
Retief, moved to the Lowveld with her
husband Christof when he was offered
a job in Mbombela. She has never
looked back, embracing the laid-back
lifestyle like a local. “I love the climate
here, especially in winter,” she says, “and
of course being so close to the Kruger
is amazing. Bushveld living is just
different. In my opinion, it’s definitely
the best place to raise a family.”
Marché’s face lights up as she chats
about her lifelong passion, her work
in skincare. A qualified somatologist,
she also studied make-up artistry, and
in July 2020, Marché Laser & Beauty
opened its doors, specialising in laser
hair removal and skincare treatments.
“It wasn’t the easiest time to start a
new venture, but I have never looked
back. I can honestly say I have never
wanted to do anything else with my
life,” she explains.
“There really are no words to describe
the feeling you get when you know
you have made someone feel amazing.
And having the latest technology at
our fingertips makes it possible for us
to make a difference, whether it’s on a
superficial or more meaningful basis.”
The word ‘somatology’ has its roots
in the Greek words ‘body’ and ‘study’,
and refer to both aesthetic principles
as well as holistic health and wellbeing.
“This can be anything from
beauty treatments to hair removal
or skin concerns such as scarring.
Ultimately, we need to remember that
each person has amazing qualities
that make us who we are. Sometimes,
people don’t see beyond the surface,
which can lead to ridicule and bullying,
especially with children. This in turn
can impact the way we view life, and
I believe it’s important to know that
we shouldn’t change who we are for
other people. Everyone who walks out
our door leaves feeling more confident
and beautiful, inside and out.”
Marché and Christof have been
married for nearly nine years, and have
two beautiful kids, five-year-old Christo
and three-year-old Lila, whom Marché
describes as her everything. Christo is
a bright and vibrant little boy with a
winning smile and plenty of hugs for
his mum. Little Lila is the apple of her
dad’s eye, and has a very well-defined
will of her own.
“Christo is soft and sweet, while Lila
knows just what she wants and when.
They are the reason I get up every
morning and do what I love,” smiles
Marché. “I definitely wouldn’t be able
to do what I do without them. They
make me tick in every way. It isn’t
always easy to balance everything, but
luckily I have the best husband who
really supports me and helps me when
things get overwhelming. We make a
mean team!”
Careful planning obviously plays an
important role as well. Preparing for
the day and week ahead and all the
things that need to be done, helps
Marché recognise which tasks need
to get done ASAP, while still leaving
adequate personal and family time.
“That is what is most important to me,
making time for myself and my family,”
she adds. Quality family time includes
spending time in nature with Trudy Christo Zulu
The beautiful couple
and Lila, going to the Kruger for the
day or the weekend if they get the
opportunity, and they also love being
on the farm. “Christof and I both grew
up on a farm, and we love that lifestyle.
We try to get to the family farm as
regularly as possible, where we take
the kids fishing, driving around to feed
the farm animals, and generally making
memories they can cherish, just as our
parents did with us. This is what I call
Mum and little Lila
10 Get It Lowveld May 2023
living our best lives!”
The Swanepoels are very sporty, and
like to expose Christo and Lila to sport
as much as possible by taking them
to events or places where they can
play together. Educational activities
make up a big part of family time. “We
love painting and drawing pictures,
building puzzles or reading books,
and we also get them to help us
cook,” Marché says. She loves to take
them somewhere nice for a coffee
date, a much-loved pastime for them,
too. Having a close relationship with
her own mum also means Marché
has advice and guidance on hand
whenever she needs it. She smiles as
she says that in her opinion, there is
nothing her mother cannot do.
Being on her toes all the time with
work and family endeavours means
Marché doesn’t have too much
spare time, especially as she regularly
works weekends. When asked what
her favourite activity is, she says that
sleeping is quite high on her popularity
list. She would also like to get back into
playing tennis, which she loved when
she was younger, but doesn’t have
much time for anymore.
Inspired by her own parents, Marché
explains that her parenting is based
on the solid foundation on which she
was raised. “The example they set and
my husband’s values motivate me
to always be the best I can be for my
children. The best advice I have ever
received , and in turn can give my
family, is to always be true to yourself
and remember to never stop chasing
your dreams.”
Creativity & clay
This bubbly mum of three,
Moné van Rooyen, chats to
us about life, flowers, and
why you are never too old
to play in the mud.
Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY. Photographers: Flashthat Studio & Huibrie Viljoen Photos
Born in the Western Cape, Moné
made the move to the Lowveld
12 years ago after she met her
husband at university. She hasn’t
looked back since, embracing the
region’s laid-back, arty lifestyle with
gusto. “I never had formal training
in art or pottery,” she laughs, “unless
you count high school art! But I’ve
always wanted to do pottery. I took
classes a few years ago and was
totally mesmerised by clay. From
there I slowly started to build up my
own studio.” Moné adds that she has
worked with a variety of mediums
before, but as they say, once the clay
bug bites, you’re hooked.
She explains that she used to believe
that to be a true potter, you have to
learn to master the wheel, a viewpoint
that has changed considerably since
she started off on her own. “I love
pottery, because it’s so versatile,” Moné
laughs, “whether it’s slab building,
coils, wheelwork - it’s all so different.
You don’t have to do only wheelwork
or use only hand building techniques.
You have the freedom to connect
with whatever technique you want to
and to just go with it. You are a potter
in your own right, no matter what
medium or style you choose to use.”
Moné works in different clay types,
but loves the red of terra cotta once
fired, and white earthenware appeals
to her because it makes glazing that
much more adaptable. “Sometimes
my ideas just look better on the white
clay and vice versa,” she says, “so I
decorate them differently. That’s just
my personal choice, but I mostly only
12 Get It Lowveld May 2023

work with earthenware (red or white).
I love wheelwork just as much as hand
building techniques, but I mostly do
slab building using moulds to make
plates, bowls, etc. Cups and vases I
make on the wheel. And the rest is
just experimenting with different
methods.”
One of those experiments includes
incorporating flowers and birds into
her work in some form. She adds that
while she loves colour, she also likes
plain - it all depends on the day and
the piece. “You’ll never have two of
the same from me. I love to play with
textures in glazes, different colours,
methods of applying glazes, styles of
hand building and also wheelwork.
I like to do floral imprints, but I also
like to just go with what I feel on that
specific day. I always thought that
I needed a set style, so that when
people see it, they think, yes, this is
Moné’s work. But you know, early
on I decided that I’m not there at
the moment. I’m still enjoying the
freedom the medium offers me. So,
it’s different, imperfect and happy -
that’s what sets it apart.”
All of this pottering around in the
mud is great for childen as well, and
Moné’s are no exception. As mum
to three amazing little humans (two
girls aged seven and two, and a boy
of five), Moné says her kids, especially
the girls, love playing with clay. “They
create the most weird and wonderful
abstract things with their hands,
and my little boy loves the pottery
wheel (show me a boy who doesn’t
love a wheel!) It’s wonderful to see
the different ages coming up with
their own unique ideas without any
guidance from me,” she laughs. Being
creative is obviously a very personal
journey, irrespective of age, evoking
emotion not only for the artist, but
also for the people who experience
the finished product.
That being said, she stresses that
you need to work really hard and
build up a name for yourself before
you can start thinking about making
a profit. “I definitely think if you
do this for money, you are in the
wrong profession. There is a spiritual
connotation to the medium, and
emotions are triggered through the
texture of the clay and glazes. I love
working with this medium. It gives me
freedom to experiment with different
methods and styles, which I love
because I do get bored easily.” Loadshedding
and kiln firing obviously
don’t get along well, but Moné gets
around this by making sure her kiln is
always packed, ready to fire whenever
she needs to.
While she says that mummying is
what keeps her busy most of the
time, Moné explains that claywork is a
wonderful escape, incorporating her
creativity with her greatest passion,
flowers. “Unfortunately,” she laughs, “I’m
not great at growing them, so I have
decided to paint them instead. Flowers
make me so happy! And that is what I
want for my pottery business in 2023,
happy designs and happy pots, and
flowers motivate me so much.”
Working on a number of new designs,
Moné says this year she plans to focus
more on functional pieces that are
also artistic, such as wall murals and
sculptures. We’ll be keeping an eye out
for her creations. After all, with flowers,
mud and an abundance of enthusiasm,
the sky truly is the limit.
Mum & me time
This May we cannot help but think about the incredible women
in our lives who have made us who we are today.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to celebrate those who have
shaped us, loved us, and inspired us to be our best selves. At Riverside CID, our team
came together to share a special recipe they’ve made with their mums or have made
as mums themselves. From traditional family ones passed down through generations
to new creations made with love, these recipes are a tribute to the special bond
between mothers and their children. So, grab your apron and get ready to cook up a
storm with us!
Lucia and Tumelo Ngobeni
LUCIA NGOBENI
As we pay tribute to the phenomenal women who
have touched our hearts in countless ways, we celebrate
Dudu Phiri, the mother of Lucia Ngobeni.
Although Dudu has passed away, her memory lives
on in the hearts and minds of those who loved her.
As a tribute to her mum, Lucia has shared a special
recipe for butter chicken that she made with her
mother and sister. It is not only a delicious way to
commemorate this day, but it’s also a beautiful
reminder of the cherished memories Lucia shared
with her mother in the kitchen.
Ingredients
• 500g boneless chicken, cut into bite-size pieces • 2 tbsp butter • 1 tbsp oil
• 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tbsp grated ginger • 1 tsp garam
masala • 1 tsp paprika • 1 tsp cumin • 1 tsp coriander • 1 tsp turmeric • 1/2 tsp salt
• 1 cup tomato puree • 1/2 cup cream
Method
Heat the butter and oil in a pan on medium heat. Add the onions and cook until
soft and translucent. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for a few more minutes. Add
the chicken and cook until browned on all sides. Add the spices and salt and stir to
combine. Add the tomato puree and stir to combine. Reduce heat to low and let the
curry simmer for 20-30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Stir in the
cream and let it heat through for a few minutes. Serve with rice or naan bread.
Sandy and Toni McLagan
TONI MCLAGAN
It’s amazing how even the smallest of
memories can have a lasting impact
on us. For Toni, it’s the memory of
sitting on the kitchen counter with
her mum, licking batter-coated bowls
while she fussed around baking.
“While my mother didn’t pass down
many recipes to me, she did instil
in me a love of all things sweet, and
that’s something that we continue
to bond over to this day. We may not
be the most effective meal preppers,
but when it comes to baking, we’re
like visionary food architects, always
up for the challenge of creating
something delicious with whatever
ingredients we have on hand!” she
laughs. “This recipe for brownies is
one of our favourites, with a batter
that’s second to none and a taste
that’s truly unforgettable. While my
mum may still think that I don’t know
the difference between mixing and
folding ingredients, the truth is that
I value our baking time together
more than anything. It’s those little
moments that make life sweet, and
I’m grateful to have someone who
taught me to appreciate them.”
Ingredients
• 310ml flour • 500ml sugar • 4 eggs
• 250ml butter • 185ml baking cocoa
• 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1/4 tsp salt
Method
Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease an 8-
or 9-inch baking pan. Melt the butter
over low heat (careful, it’s easy to
burn). In a mixing bowl combine the
cocoa and sugar. Add the melted butter
to it. Stir in the eggs and vanilla.
Add the flour and salt and mix just
until smooth. Pour the batter into the
greased pan and bake for 45 minutes.

RONEL DE BRUIN
“Cooking a generational paella recipe with my
daughters is a cherished tradition that’s been passed
down through the years,” smiles Ronel. “This recipe not
only brings our family together, but also connects them
to their rich heritage and cultural traditions. It’s a testament
to the power of food to create lasting memories
and strengthen family bonds. I hope that it will inspire
you to create your own cherished memories with the
special women in your life and that it will be a delicious
addition to your Mother’s Day celebrations.”
Ingredients
• 60ml olive oil • 8 chicken thighs • 500g monkfish or any other white fish, cut into
portions • 500g calamari rings • 250g prawns • 1 lobster tail • 1 onion, finely chopped
• 3 cloves of garlic • 1 green pepper, diced • 100g bacon, cubed • 450g rice, uncooked
• 20ml parsley, chopped • 1L chicken stock • 100ml white wine • 8 filaments of saffron
or 10ml turmeric • 2 dried bay leaves • 1 can of mussels in shells, liquid reserved • 410g
canned tomatoes, finely chopped • 250ml frozen peas • 100ml tinned pimento, sliced
Method
Into a paella pan or heavy skillet, place the oil and heat. Add the chicken thighs into
the pan and brown. Remove and set aside. Sauté the monkfish, calamari, prawns and
lobster separately for about 3 minutes. Remove and set aside. Add the onion, garlic,
pepper and bacon to the pan and sauté. Reduce the heat and add the rice and parsley.
Stir over the medium heat until the rice begins to whiten. In a separate pan, heat the
stock, wine, saffron, bay leaves, reserved liquid from mussels and chopped tomatoes.
Allow to come to boil and remove. Arrange half the mussels on top of the rice, and top
with half the peas and half the pimento. Arrange the monkfish, calamari and prawns on
top. Finish with the remaining mussels, peas and pimento. Pour the stock liquid over the
whole, boil. Arrange the chicken on top and cover with greaseproof paper. Bake at 160°C
for about 35 minutes. Add a little extra stock if necessary during cooking. Remove from
the oven, allow to stand for 5 minutes. Garnish with lemon wedges and chopped parsley.
Jessica Prim and Le’reena
Maulid
JESSICA PRIM
Mother’s Day is a time to reflect on the important
women in our lives and the many ways they’ve shaped
us. For Jessica, one of the fondest memories she has of
her childhood is the smell of her mother Le’reena’s
mutton curry cooking in the kitchen. “This traditional
recipe is not only delicious, but it’s also a reminder of
the love and warmth that permeated every family
gathering,” she smiles, “this dish is more than just a
recipe - it’s a symbol of my family’s cultural heritage and
a connection to my roots. As you prepare this recipe, I
hope that you too will feel the love and warmth that comes with sharing a special meal
with the important people in your life.”
Ingredients
• 1kg mutton, cut into medium pieces • 2 onions, finely chopped • 2 tomatoes, finely
chopped • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste • 2 green chillies, slit lengthwise • 1 tsp red chilli
powder • 1 tsp turmeric powder • 2 tsp coriander powder • 1 tsp cumin powder
• Salt to taste • 3 tbsp oil • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
Method
Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add the onions. Fry until they are golden brown. Add
the ginger-garlic paste and fry for a minute. Add the tomatoes and cook until they are
soft and mushy. Add the mutton pieces, green chillies, red chilli powder, turmeric powder,
coriander powder, cumin powder and salt to taste. Mix well. Cook on high heat for 5
minutes. Add 2 cups of water, cover the pressure cooker and cook until the mutton is
tender (usually takes about 20-25 minutes after the first whistle). Turn off the heat and let
the pressure release naturally. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with
rice or bread.
SHIVON WIGGINS
This is a time to celebrate the incredible
women in our lives, not just those who
are our biological mums, but also those
who have nurtured us and loved us like
their own. Shivon, general manager of
Riverside CID, is one of those special
motherly figures who has always gone
above and beyond to support and care
for her team. As a tribute to her, they
decided to share her special prawn
curry recipe that she enjoys making
for her family and sons who can’t get
enough of it.
“This recipe is a testament to Shivon’s
love and generosity, and we’re grateful
to have her in our lives as a mentor and
a friend,” smiles Jessica. “As you enjoy
this delicious curry, we hope that it
will inspire you to celebrate the special
women in your life who have loved and
supported you, and to pass on the love
and kindness to those around you.”
Ingredients
• 500g prawns, peeled and deveined
• 1 onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic,
minced • 1 tsp grated ginger • 1 tomato,
chopped • 2 tbsp oil • 1 tsp ground
turmeric • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp
ground coriander • 1 tsp garam masala
• 1/2 tsp salt • 1/4 cup coconut milk
• 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
Method
Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add the onion, garlic, and ginger and
sauté until the onion is translucent. Add
the tomato and cook until soft. Add
the turmeric, cumin, coriander, garam
masala, and salt, and stir until fragrant.
Add the prawns and cook until they
turn pink. Stir in the coconut milk and
cook for another 5 minutes. Garnish
with chopped coriander leaves and
serve with rice or naan bread.
Crumpets, cookies and coffee … and other
Mother’s
Day spoils
We know mums deserve to be pampered
every day of the year, but it isn’t always
possible. Luckily, this special occasion gives
us the opportunity to stop everything else
and treat one of our favourite people to an
abundance of goodies and spoils.
Cookies
Ingredients
• 225g softened butter • 11g caster
sugar • 275g plain flour • 1 tsp
cinnamon • 75g chocolate chips
Method
Preheat the oven to 190°C. In a large
mixing bowl, cream the butter until
soft. Add the sugar and beat until
light and fluffy. Sift in the flour, and
add the cinnamon and chocolate
chips.
Bring the mixture together, forming
a dough. Break off walnut-size pieces
and place them on a baking sheet,
flattening them a little with the
back of a spoon. Bake for 10 to 12
minutes until golden brown and
slightly firm. Place on a rack and
leave to cool before eating.
indulgent cup of tea.
Breakfast in bed with a pot of relaxing
and aromatic freshly brewed tea and
swoonworthy home-made crumpets
is the perfect start to a lovely day for
your mum. Have the kids haul out
the ingredients and do the mixing,
pouring and drizzling, with a little
help from a grown-up when it comes
to the cooking.
Crumpets are versatile; they can be
covered in healthy fruit and nuts or
enveloped in ribbons of whipped
cream, indulgent butter, or oh-soyummy
honey.
An afternoon of pampering
Run a bath with a few drops of
essential oils added (rose and
chamomile reduce anxiety, and
lavender, bergamot and sandalwood
help with relaxation), put on your
mum’s favourite music, pour her a glass
of bubbly and let her sit back and relax
while you whip up a batch of cookies.
Easy enough for the kids to make and
dads will also ace this recipe.
Scrumptious crumpets
Ingredients
• 2 1/2 cups white flour • 400ml
warm water • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp sugar
• 1 tsp baking powder • 1 sachet
dry yeast
Method
Pour the water into a bowl, add the
yeast and stir for a few seconds.
Add the flour, sugar and salt and stir
lightly, then add the baking powder
and stir again, but don’t over-mix.
Cover the bowl with cling film and
leave to rise for at least an hour.
When there are little bubbles all over
the batter and it has risen by around
10-15%, it is ready. Heat a frying pan
to a medium temperature. Add a
knob of butter and swirl around the
pan to melt. Stir the batter, then
scoop up about a 1/3 cup in a ladle
or cup and gently pour into the pan.
Repeat this 3 times so you have 3
crumpets cooking at a time. Don’t
overcrowd the pan. Cook for about
10 minutes. When little bubbles start
forming on top of the crumpets
and they have firmed up, you can
flip them onto the other side and
repeat the process for about 20 to
30 seconds. Repeat until the batter
is finished.
To serve, pile your yummy treats
onto a plate and slather them with
butter, drizzle golden syrup or
honey over them, and/or scatter a
handful of berries and nuts (we love
blueberries and walnuts) on and
around them.
Milk – what a winner!
advertorial
Here’s what you should know to choose the best milk option for everyone in your family
Cow’s milk is a versatile and convenient source of important nutrients for the
whole family. It contains a unique combination of valuable nutrients, of which
some are typically lacking in many South Africans’ diets. These include calcium,
potassium and vitamin A. Milk is also an affordable source of good-quality
protein, and its overall health benefit stems from more than just the sum of its
individual nutrients. What’s more is that milk is ready to be enjoyed just as it is or
as a base in other dishes and helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer.
Your milk choices
The difference between full-cream, lowfat
and fat-free milk is the amount of
fat per serving, its energy (kJ) value and
the vitamin A content. When the fat of
milk is removed, the fat-soluble vitamin
A is lost. Children, elderly and immune
compromised people should therefore
rather use full-cream milk, while people
with diabetes or who are overweight
should use low-fat or fat-free milk.
250 ml
Full-cream milk - ≤8.5g fat and 640kJ
Low-fat milk - ≤3.75g fat and 518kJ
Fat-free milk - ≤1,25g fat and 362kJ
Put healthy options in your basket
It does not matter if you buy fresh, pasteurised milk
or long-life milk. It is equally nutritious. However,
if you buy powdered milk, make sure that it’s
real cow’s milk. Look at your food label and more
specifically the ingredients list. The list of ingredients will be short and the first item
will always be full-cream or fat-free (cow’s) milk. If not, it’s not real milk.
Don’t be fooled: Coffee creamer is not cow’s milk! Coffee creamer is made from
unhealthy plant fats and contains very little protein (0.1%) and no calcium or any
of the other important nutrients of milk. Coffee creamer is not a substitute for milk
and can never replace milk or formula milk in the diet of children or babies.
Take your pick: You’ll get the same unique combination of nutrients and the taste
you love whichever milk option you choose!
For more information, visit www.rediscoverdairy.co.za
or follow rediscoverDAIRY on Facebook.
An initiative by the Consumer Education Project of Milk SA
You can also choose to buy fresh
(pasteurised) milk or milk that keeps
for longer, such as long-life (UHT) or
powdered milk. It doesn’t matter which
one you choose – each offers you all
the goodness of cow’s milk.
Always keep fresh milk in the fridge.
Long-life milk can be stored in the
cupboard until you need it, but put it
in the fridge once it has been opened.
Powdered milk is convenient because
you can prepare only as much as you
need at one time.
Did you know?
• It is best to store your milk in the
back of the fridge (not the door) to
ensure it stays fresh – even when the
power is down.
• Want to use milk later or worried
about loadshedding? Simply freeze it
in smaller containers, and then let it
thaw in the fridge before use. A quick
shake once thawed and it’s ready to
drink or use in your favourite recipes.

Sibusiso Godfrey
Sibiya
Blending excellence and
old-world charm
Walking into the newly revamped Shandon Lodge is akin to taking
a trip back in time, to an era more genteel and less frenzied, but
with all the modern conveniences and comforts of today’s world.
Under new management since May 2020,
guests can rest assured knowing their
stay at Shandon Lodge will be exceptional.
At the helm are owners Antonette
and Henry Cawood, who are committed
to excellence, offering guests a truly
unique home-away-from-home
experience. The establishment boasts a
number of awards, and as the oldest
guest house in Mbombela, has certainly
stood the test of time.
For those looking for a relaxed and
exceptional dining experience, look no
further than Shandon’s E-Tree Restaurant.
Boasting a spectacular view over the
mountains, this laid-back eatery is open to
the public, and with a brand-new menu is
well worth a visit. More than just a place
to sit down and eat, E-Tree’s (a play on
the word eatery) dedicated team has
worked tirelessly to craft a menu that will
tantalise your taste buds, using only the
freshest ingredients available.
Antonette’s aim is to create a space
that offers a delightful and memorable
experience, from the moment you sit
down to the grand finale, including great
food, excellent service, and a warm and
welcoming ambience. A must at E-Tree is
a cocktail at the Gatsby-ish bar, manned
by the marvellous barman Sibusiso
Godfrey Sibiya, who knows a thing or
two about cocktails. The lamplight from
the large orb lanterns cast a warm glow
that subtly suggests you stay awhile,
which you won’t mind doing after one

of Sibusiso’s margaritas. This dreamy
concoction is a tower of lusciousness, with
an icy tartness that melts in your mouth;
perfect for those long, lazy afternoons
with a handful of your friends (your
significant other won’t mind either!).
There are a number of other specialities
available, (soon to come is the Shandon
Lodge teapot cocktail, an infusion of the
exotic and traditional with a dramatic
flair), along with all the usual suspects and
old favourites you would expect from a
high-end eatery.
Another new introduction to the lodge is
the spa. Tranquil and calming, Antonette
explains that what really sets it apart is
the fact that it is a spa, and not a beauty
salon. It’s the ideal space to unwind and
Antonette Cawood
enjoy a pamper session, from manicures
and pedicures to massages, body wraps
and facials. With two treatment rooms,
both of which are ideal for couples, an
indulgent treatment with Shandon Spa’s
professional therapists is a must.
The lodge itself consists of 11 luxurious
rooms that are spread out over the
property. They are furnished and
decorated in an old-world French style,
but with all the up-to-date facilities you
would expect from a modern hotel. Each
room has its own en suite bathroom,
offering privacy and convenience in
plush surroundings. The guest house is
split level, and certain of the rooms boast
their own picturesque, private gardens,
while others enjoy spectacular views
of the Crocodile River Gorge. Each one
has been specifically designed to offer
the ultimate in comfort, making you feel
at home whether you are a discerning
businessman, a couple or a family.
Antonette and Henry’s vision is to
continually build on and provide the
best possible experience for their guests,
ensuring that their visit exceeds their
expectations. They believe that the key to
success is to focus on three crucial fields -
personalised service, unique experiences,
and attention to detail. In this way they
create a welcoming and comfortable
environment where visitors can relax,
unwind, and enjoy everything on offer,
from the quality of the food and spa
treatments to the cleanliness and comfort
of the rooms and public spaces.
The Cawoods are incredibly excited
about what lies ahead, and the great
potential that exists for the future of the
guest house, spa and restaurant. With
typical Lowveld warmth and welcoming
hospitality, not to mention the high
standards of excellent service, Shandon
Lodge is indeed a welcoming home-awayfrom-home
experience.
BUCO’s brand-new nursery
Oops-a-daisy!
Plants are truly the unsung heroes of our existence. They bring us
joy and happiness, whether it’s from a beautiful flower grown from
seed or fruit trees that have been nurtured and carefully tended.
A leading name in hardware and decor,
BUCO Nelspruit has added a brand-new
nursery to its establishment. Your onestop
shop for all your planting needs,
from spades, garden forks and trowels
to compost, fertiliser and potting soil, all
the plants are locally sourced in a bid to
support the local community. Available
from the nursery for R50 each, there is a
wide variety from which to choose and
BUCO nursery expert Tinus Pretorius is on
hand to offer any suggestions and advice
you may need, from equipment to type
of plant and correct care. An added
bonus is that while you are browsing
through the nursery, you can have your
car washed.
There are a number of ways to
showcase your fruit trees, herbs or
flowers, and one of the easiest and
most attractive is the ubiquitous
flower box. Always a winning idea,
flower boxes can be transported,
and always look nice in a courtyard,
stoep or garden setting. There are a
variety of options, from purpose (a
kitchen garden outside the back door,
overflowing with parsley, fragrant
thyme and lavender) to size, a beautiful
lemon or orange tree on the terrace
or an abundance of vibrant, colourful
blooms to brighten up the backyard.
Building your own flower box is also a
rewarding and satisfying undertaking,
and it won’t cost the earth.
Sand down your wood

Assemble the box
To stand in line to win a BUCO
Mother’s Day hamper, answer
the following question: How
much is BUCO selling plants for?
Send your details and answer to
competitions@getitlowveld.co.za to
reach us by noon on May 29.
Good luck!
Fill it with the necessary soil and plants
Tinus Pretorius
The ubiquitous flower box
The steps are fairly easy ... you
will need to purchase wood of your
choice, and make sure it is cut to
your specified size (BUCO will do
this for you). Sand it so that it is
smooth. Assemble the box, and line
the inside with bidem, which assists
with drainage. Fill your box with
soil, and then make a well for the
plant or plants you have chosen.
Gently insert your tree, flower or
shrub into the soil. Cover with
more soil and water thoroughly.
Tinus can advise on fertilisers
and compost best suited to your
specific plant type.
Win!
