FRANCHISING CREATES
MORE JOBS AND BUSINESS
OPPORTUNITIES IN 2023
In its 2023 Franchising Economic Outlook report, The International
Franchise Association (IFA) predicts that the number of franchise
units and job growth will continue to outpace pre-pandemic levels,
providing more jobs and business opportunities across the country.
Franchise companies are leading the economic recovery in the U.S.
Many franchise owners report strong annual incomes exceeding
$118,000 after their first two years in business.
This could be the ideal time for the entrepreneurial-minded to
make the leap into franchising. Conducting your due diligence is key
if you’re considering buying a franchise. The very best franchise companies
understand that their success depends highly on the success of
their franchisees. That’s why franchisee satisfaction is a key indicator
of a franchise system’s health and financial strength and a franchise
owner’s potential for happiness and fulfillment.
Each year, Franchise Business Review surveys 30,000+ franchise
owners across more than 370 of today’s leading franchise companies to
deliver real results to you. We invite you to leverage our franchise data
and reviews to empower your research.
In this issue, we focus on the Top Low-Cost Franchises, the Top
Franchises for Women, and the Top Recession-Proof Franchises. Finding
the right franchise can be daunting, but you don’t have to go it
alone! We hope the award-winning brands on our lists offer the insights
you need to find your perfect franchise fit.
Happy Franchising!
FBR INSIDER INSIGHTS
FEMALE FRANCHISE OWNERS ARE
DRIVEN BY PASSION—FULFILLED
BY PAYING IT FORWARD.
87% of female franchise owners enjoy operating their businesses
According to Forbes, women-owned
businesses thrived in 2022, and
female-owned business earnings rose
by 27%. That’s more than male-owned firms
grew in the same period. More specifically,
women-owned companies in the services,
manufacturing, food, accommodation, and
healthcare segments saw the most growth. 1
This growth trajectory is expected to
continue through 2023. In its 2023 Women
in Business Trends report, Guidant Financial
states that most female business owners
choose entrepreneurship because they favor
being their own bosses and are largely dissatisfied
with traditional jobs. The report states
that women business owners are motivated
to realize their personal aspirations and are
20 percent more likely than men to launch a
business based on their passions.2
In its 2022 Annual Report, the National
Women’s Business Council (NWBC) makes
policy recommendations focused on women’s
access to capital and opportunity, women in
STEM, and rural women’s entrepreneurship.
The Council states that Congress should consider
viable options for expanding tax relief
for small business owners severely impacted
by global supply chain disruptions and workforce
availability issues—particularly for businesses
in industries with a significant level of
participation by women and minorities.3
Franchise Business Review surveyed franchise
owners from 322 brands representing
over 8,100 female franchisees to evaluate the
level of satisfaction among female franchise
owners. According to responses from thousands
of women, 87% of female franchise
FEMALE FRANCHISE OWNERS—IN THEIR
OWN WORDS
Kate Neall, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited
Nature Shop in Gambrills, Maryland, said,
“I feel honored that we can help bring joy to
people’s lives through the hobby of backyard
bird feeding. Customers refer to my shop as
their ‘happy place,’ I can’t think of a better
compliment!”
“Wild Birds Unlimited has given me a
golden opportunity to support my family
while also providing a valuable service to my
community, and I couldn’t be more grateful!
Embracing my entrepreneurial spirit is easy,
but finding the right opportunity to invest
in myself was the hardest part. It took me
several years to find the right fit. I had explored
a variety of businesses that all seemed to lack
something. I felt discouraged, but I knew my
best chance of success hinged on a wise investment,
so I kept my standards high and refused
to settle for less. Wild Birds Unlimited offered
me the perfect blend of support and freedom.”
“I believe that networking is an essential
key to success. I actively seek out opportunities
(both within the franchise and externally)
to meet with fellow entrepreneurs to exchange
advice and ideas. I attribute much of my
success to those who graciously gave me guidance
and support when needed. The best way
to ‘pay it forward’ is to make myself available
to do the same for others.”
Heather Peterson, owner of Wild Birds
Unlimited in Allentown, Pennsylvania, said,
“My experience as a franchiser owner has
been fantastic! As a mother of two busy teenage
boys, my free time is precious and always
filled. The greatest thing about owning a WBU
franchise is that the franchisor takes a lot of
the work off my plate. They create all the marketing
and branding materials for me. They
even negotiated many buying deals and have
taken the time to put processes into place that
would take a tremendous amount of time if
I were an independent retailer. As a franchisor,
it’s in their best interest for their franchisees to
be successful. A good franchisor is supportive
in all business areas, and that’s what they are to
me. It’s invaluable!”
Franchisee Patricia Mesi of Spoiled Rotten
Photography in Alpharetta, Georgia, owns the
franchise with her sister, Christine Mamon.
“What I love most about owning my franchise is
the flexibility it allows,” Patricia said, “I can not
only own and operate a successful business, but
I can demonstrate to my daughters the balance
of being a successful businesswoman while
enjoying work-life balance.”
“I strive to mentor my team by providing
the training, encouragement, and incentives
I was afforded when I started. I make a point
to spend time getting to know each and every
person who is a part of my team. It gives me
the insight and knowledge I need to support
my team best. Success comes from surrounding
yourself with a team of people who are
Wild Birds Unlimited
Arvada, CO (2022)
Franchise owner since 2020
20 Employees
After 20+ years as an executive for leading
technology companies, ‘selling birdseed’ seemed
like a significant departure for Dean Seifert. But
once he saw the positive impact that his business
has on his life and in his community, he realized
that something doesn’t have to be global in scale
to make a significant impact.
When he first started exploring franchises, his
most important considerations were:
1. Resiliency: How the business model addresses
customer needs and whether it would be
sustainable over time.
2. Business Model: A strong financial model with
predictable costs/expenses and a relationshipbased
customer acquisition model versus
transactional.
3. Brand Reputation: A clear vision, purpose, and
positive standing in the community.
“My wife, Tina, and I chose Wild Birds
Unlimited because it checked all the boxes! We
had never seen a brand or business model as
mature and consistently successful as the WBU
brand.”
“WBU’s thorough training, orientation, and
onboarding processes are first-class. We grew
the store to be the #1 top-selling store about
six months by increasing our advertising spend
in certain areas, focusing on growing the online
store, and signing up new Daily Savings Club
members.”
knowledgeable and passionate about their
Lynn Driver owns a Spoiled Rotten
Photography franchise in Buckhead, Georgia.
“I love having the freedom to work when and
where I want. I especially love that the success
of my business begins and ends with me. With
the support I get from Spoiled Rotten Photography,
it is difficult not to live up to your
greatest potential! The corporate office is with
us 100% of the time.”
“I’ve had to overcome some obstacles as
a female entrepreneur, the biggest of which
was believing that I can do this work just as
well as any man. I was timid in the beginning.
I found my voice with each new success, especially
when it came to scouting new business.
My business success comes from my efforts.
So I put myself out there. I’ve begun teaching
my three girls the business. Entrepreneurship
is the legacy I am trying to pass on to them
so they know they can support themselves and
their families one day.”
Franchisee Dipali Patel, The Coder
School (featured on our cover), said, “I had
been interviewing other franchises when
I connected with Hansel Lynn and Wayne
Teng at The Coder School, and I felt an
instant connection. I felt a sense of alignment,
belonging, and forward-thinking. We had
similar approaches to business and similar
backgrounds, having immigrant parents. The
company culture is inclusive and welcoming.
That gave me a sense of hope.”
“As an entrepreneur and single mother,
I struggle to balance business and family.
Being solely responsible makes me risk-averse
at times. I’m afraid of making costly mistakes.
To overcome this, I have cultivated a group of
family, friends, and colleagues who can vent,
rationalize, and support one another.”
“The cultural stigma for female entrepreneurs
is still prevalent. Stereotyped family
ideals of women handling all household and
family duties make it difficult for women
to think of entrepreneurship. I opened my
franchise in Cerritos, California, to break this
stigma. Today, I own two The Coder School
franchises and oversee an all-women administrative
staff.”
Faizun Kamal is an award-winning franchise
coach, renowned public speaker, and
best-selling author of, “The Right Franchise
for You: Escape the 9 to 5, Generate Wealth,
and Live Life on Your Terms.”
“I guide clients to proactively move beyond
career burnout and build a sustainable career
they love. For over two decades, I worked in
industries ranging from nonprofit to international
development to corporate. Working and
living across four continents, I felt a sense of
misalignment deep inside my bones.”
“Finally, after getting laid off from corporate
America, I began my journey to discover
my true calling. It quickly became clear that
I yearned to live on my own terms. With no
roadmap, I followed the map of my heart,
found the franchise industry, and fell in love
with its simple but profound promise: You can
FRANCHISEE
SATISFACTION MATTERS
With thousands of different franchises available today, it’s hard to know which are potentially
good investments, and which should be avoided. There are many factors to consider when
investing in a franchise, but one of the most important is the satisfaction of current
franchise owners.
Each year, we survey thousands of franchise owners to find the companies that are truly
the best of the best. We ask the questions everyone wants to know:
• Do you enjoy operating the business?
• Are you getting the training and support you need?
• Are you making the money you expected?
• And most important... Would you recommend this franchise to others?
HOW WE SELECT THE TOP FRANCHISES
STEP 1: Invite
We invite all franchise companies based in North America
with 10 or more franchise owners to participate in our
research at no cost.
STEP 2: Survey
We contact all franchisees in the franchise companies
that choose to participate and invite them to answer a
33-question satisfaction survey covering eight key areas,
including: financial opportunity, training & support,
leadership, and core values.
STEP 4: Score
The FSI score is used to benchmark each company’s
franchisee satisfaction level against over 1,100
franchise brands representing tens of thousands
of franchisees and determine their ranking
among other participating companies.
STEP 5: Award
We identify the brands that exceed
the benchmark and recognize them
with a Top Franchise award.
STEP 3: Analyze
We analyze the responses from the franchisees and
use a weighted scale to determine an overall Franchisee
Satisfaction Index (FSI) score that ranges from 0-100. Other
factors considered in the weighting are the percentage of
franchisees that participate in the survey, the age of the
survey and the size of the franchise system.
FEATURED FRANCHISEE
Juliet Kyes
ActionCOACH
Tampa Bay, Florida
Franchise owner since 2008 | 6 Employees
A year after she graduated college with
a business degree, Juliet Kyes’ parents
purchased an ActionCOACH franchise. “My
father transitioned out of a hospital CEO role,
and a non-compete agreement prevented
him from taking a similar role in the same
region. I remember encouraging my parents
to meet with a franchise broker so they could
achieve their desired career change while
remaining in our community. I didn’t know
then that I’d join them a few months later!”
“The franchise broker helped us prioritize
our needs and criteria, then provided three
brands to explore. We were especially
interested in ActionCOACH because my
parents saw how the work would be similar
to diagnosing businesses and helping them
thrive, which they were familiar with in the
healthcare sector. Also, we saw the need
for these business services in our area and
knew we could apply our passion for helping
others succeed in this rewarding business
model.”
“The main criteria during our research
were having time flexibility, helping people,
and being within the budgeted investment
level. The most important elements to us
were lifestyle and positively impacting our
community. After completing a Discovery Day
with ActionCOACH, the franchise stood out
from all others—no contest!”
“Getting insights and data from the
FBR website helped us to compare
different opportunities and formulate the
questions we wanted to ask franchisees and
franchisors.”
“It was impressive how much franchisees
were willing to share with us—including
financials. We wanted to understand their
first-year financials, monthly expenses,
services they chose to sell, marketing
strategies, the good and the bad of
the franchise global office, and overall
satisfaction with franchise ownership. I could
feel the culture of abundance before I even
became an official franchisee.”
“When speaking with franchise owners,
it was just as important to hear what may
not be going well as what is going well. The
franchisees were super positive about their
experiences! Today, I understand that this
franchise really does have mostly positives
to offer, and that theme continues 15 years
later.”
“We always participate in franchisee
satisfaction surveys. ActionCOACH absolutely
values our feedback. I’m even on the Partner
Committee that the franchise created
to allow us to gather and communicate
feedback for improvement on a monthly
basis.”
“Since ActionCOACH was new to our
community, most people initially thought
we were a transportation company. Then,
one year after opening, the recession hit.
These challenges made it difficult to produce
enough revenue to pay the overhead we
committed to. Hiring coaches helped our
firm thrive! Looking back, if I could do some
things differently, I would keep expenses
tighter in the early years, follow the system
more closely, and grow a team with coaches
that are salaried employees rather than
commission-based.”
“The personal and professional growth
I’ve gained in this environment is amazing.
I’ve seen growth in my communication,
sales, marketing, and presenting skills
and my overall emotional intelligence.
This culture helps me maintain a forwardthinking
mindset that expands the scope and
magnitude of my vision for the future.”
“Our firm has been a member of multiple
organizations in the community, such as
rotary chambers, BNI, networking groups,
professional associations, and volunteer
boards. We give back with complimentary
coaching sessions, seminars, presentations,
and even board facilitation.”
“We started our franchise with four
territories and now own seven. The shortterm
expansion plan involves hiring and
training more business coaches. The longterm
plan is to grow the markets in our
newer territories and offer partnerships with
coaches to expand beyond that.”
“Our franchise and our community have
recognized our firm many times. Our success
is the success of our clients and members.
Being in business for 15 years has allowed us
to see businesses grow and exit successfully.
The national statistics say only 15% of
businesses listed will sell, and I’m proud
to say 100% of the businesses our firm
has worked with that have gone to market
have sold and have sold for more than they
expected to get.”
“The thing I enjoy most is seeing our
impact on the businesses in our community.
Many business owners were so stressed they
were having health issues and self-isolating,
and now they are flourishing personally,
financially, and mentally!”
“Today, we are successfully following our
succession plan, which has allowed me, as
the daughter of the founders, to take over
as Managing Partner for the last three years
and provide a successful exit for my parents
this year. I’m excited to see this franchise has
provided them with retirement and afforded
me a way to provide for my family and the
families of our team in the future.”
LOW-COST FRANCHISES DELIVER
HIGH FRANCHISEE SATISFACTION
Franchise owners enjoy flexibility and profitability
The world of franchising is massive,
offering thousands of different
opportunities with investment
levels and cash requirements spanning the
gamut. Luckily some promising low-cost
franchise opportunities can be profitable and
rewarding—especially if they have a proven
business model and strong brand recognition.
A franchise’s profitability can depend on
many factors, such as the business model, the
industry, the location, the competition, and
leadership. While low-cost franchises may
You should look at the whole investment and understand the
long-term value of a business and the annual cash flow it may
produce over time.”
— Eric Stites, CEO, Franchise Business Review
have a lower upfront investment, some may
have lower profit margins and require higher
sales volumes or a longer ramp-up time to
generate a sustainable income. Researching
a franchise thoroughly and analyzing its
financials, including its fees, expenses, and
profit margin, is important during your due
diligence.
RITA TOWER
The Team at NextHome Beacon Realty in Rehoboth, Massachusetts
“The potential annual income that a
franchise owner can earn is an important
metric, but there are many factors that come
into play,” said Eric Stites, CEO of Franchise
Business Review. “Unlike employees, business
owners build equity in their businesses.
You should look at the whole investment and
understand the long-term value of a business
and the annual cash flow it may produce over
time. Much of the wealth business owners
ultimately realize comes in the form of equity,
which they cash out when they sell the business.”
Understanding your own values and goals
is an important part of your due diligence. Do
you want to work full-time, or part-time? How
much income do you want or need to earn?
How important is a flexible schedule to you?
Many franchise owners are happy and
successful for myriad reasons. There are also
many unhappy or unsuccessful franchise
owners in business today. While you may
believe that your experience will be unique to
you and your values and goals, understanding
the experiences of franchisees on both sides of
the spectrum can provide important insight.
Pay attention to the Franchisee Satisfaction
Ratings for any franchise that interests you.
During our research, we got feedback from
franchise owners in both camps—the happy
and the not-so-happy. In fact, we surveyed
11,900 franchise owners representing over
135 low-cost franchise brands to determine
our list of 2023 Top Low-Cost Franchises.
The franchises that made this year’s list
have average owner satisfaction 12% higher
than our industry benchmark, making them
all excellent options for entrepreneurs considering
franchise ownership.
Approximately one-third of the surveyed
franchise companies have initial investments
starting under $100K. With financing, many
can be started for as little as $15-$20K, with a
few options starting as low as $10K.
HomeVestors of America
Houston, Texas
Franchise owner since 2015
4 Employees
“I flipped homes on my own for about three years
and found getting quality leads challenging.
I solved that issue by buying a HomeVestors
franchise! When I first started exploring
franchises, I already knew I wanted HomeVestors.
I wanted to be the best I could be, so I aligned
myself with the top company in real estate
investment.”
“Franchisee satisfaction played an important
role in my research. I spoke with almost every
franchise owner in my market, and they were
incredibly positive about their experience. There
wasn’t one person that said they wished they
had not purchased a HomeVestors franchise. That
was very telling. After meeting with HomeVestors
franchisees and the leadership team at the
corporate office, it was clear that these people
would help me reach the next level!”
“I purchased a HomeVestors franchise
because of the people. They have continually
shown me they are there to help me succeed.
Even though they are not involved in my day-today,
we all work together to be successful in this
business.”
“I had my most successful year last year, and I
have plans to double that this year! I have hired
more people, and I am considering an increased
investment in my marketing.”
“Today, I am not just a person who flips houses
and has some rentals. I am a true business owner
looking to expand in a business where the sky is
the limit!”
FBR INSIDER INSIGHTS
IS IT WISE TO BUY A FRANCHISE
IN A DOWNTURNED ECONOMY?
A new wave of franchise owners is expected in 2023
Those with an entrepreneurial spirit
often seek to indulge their passion
through business ownership. And
franchising can be very promising for those
who haven’t started a business. But, it is
important to look before you leap. Do your due
diligence and compare opportunities before
making an investment. Your new business
should ignite your passion and fit your skills,
interests, lifestyle, and financial goals.
During the 2008 recession and the
2020 Covid-19 pandemic, many employees
experienced layoffs or chose to leave corporate
America to start their own businesses.
Combining their corporate backgrounds and
professional skills with a franchise’s proven
system and support proved to be a winning
combination for many. Entrepreneurship comes
with some risks, particularly when facing a
possible recession. However, in 2023, a new
wave of eager franchisees is expected to capitalize
on exciting new business opportunities. 1
FINDING THE BEST RECESSION-PROOF
FRANCHISE FOR YOU
Hundreds of franchises claim to be “the best.”
So, how can you weed through the noise to
find the right franchise fit for you? Franchise
Business Review surveyed 36,460 franchise
owners representing over 365 leading franchise
brands to determine the award winners
on our 2023 Top Recession-Proof Franchises
list. The franchises on this year’s list not only
have outstanding franchisee satisfaction
ratings, as reported by the franchise owners
themselves, but they also demonstrate a strong
potential to outperform their competitors
during challenging economic times.
1. Forbes: Franchising Trends To Be On The Lookout
For In 2023
Kitchen Tune-Up franchise owners Kamal and Joti Bulsara.
Our recession-proof list is a great place to
start your exploration into franchising! Here
are some key things to focus on during your
research when comparing franchise opportunities,
speaking with franchise owners, and
interviewing the franchisor.
PROFITABILITY AND BENCH STRENGTH
More aspiring entrepreneurs are looking
for resilient business opportunities that offer
substantial returns. If you are interested in
buying a business, the profitability potential
of that business is likely one of your greatest
concerns. Estimating a business’s financial
potential can be nuanced. Luckily, there
are resources to turn to for evidence of past
profits that can help you forecast your profit
potential: Inspect item 19 of the Franchise
Disclosure Document (FDD) closely and
speak with other franchise owners about how
long it took to become profitable and their
long-term profitability.
Although labor shortages and supply
chain challenges continue to impact the profit
margins of many businesses, a franchisor may
be able to negotiate better prices for supplies
and materials due to their larger purchasing
power and established vendor relationships.
This strengthens the entire system and can
help lower costs and increase profit margins
for franchise owners.
FBR INSIDER INSIGHTS
FEATURED FRANCHISEE
IN-DEMAND PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
Franchising has historically performed well
across all sectors despite economic volatility.
However, some tend to be more recessionresistant
than others. “Franchises in the
need-to-have, rather than the nice-to-have,
segments are more likely to fare well during a
recession,” said Eric Stites, CEO of Franchise
Business Review. “The products and services
consumers are less likely to cut back on during
a downturn include childcare, education,
elder services, pet services, home repair,
business services—even restaurant franchises.
Americans love to dine out. That’s not going
to change anytime soon. In response to recessions
and the pandemic, many restaurants
have developed new models to serve diners
better thanks to delivery, curbside pickup, and
additional drive-through capacities. Look for
a franchise that offers in-demand products or
services that can be agile and innovative in
response to changing market conditions.”
FRANCHISOR GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT
One of the biggest reasons people turn to
franchising rather than “going it alone” is the
stability a franchise system can offer. Most
franchisors provide training and ongoing support
to their franchisees. Franchisor support
can be especially valuable during an economic
downturn when business owners may need
to adapt their operations to changing market
conditions. How responsive is the franchise
in question to market changes, supply chain
challenges, and unexpected hurdles? Be sure
to ask the franchisees if the initial training and
support were sufficient, how much ongoing
training and support is provided, and if they
can rely on their franchisors for guidance
and support during challenging times. When
speaking with the franchisor, ask for examples
of their responsiveness to unanticipated challenges
and how they support franchise owners
during challenging economic times.
We invite you to explore the award-winning
franchises on our Top Recession-Proof List as
part of your due diligence. ■
DAN CALDICOTT
HomeWell Care Services
Natick, Massachusetts
Franchise owner since 2020
70 Employees
Dan Caldicott and his wife were at a transition
point in their careers and considering what they
wanted to do in the second half of their lives.
“We had many skills that easily would easily
translate into owning and operating a franchise,
but we’re not natural-born risk-takers or
entrepreneurs. So, we needed a business model
to follow to gain the confidence to become
business owners. Integrity was at the top of our
criteria list. It is the starting point for all things.
Communication was second—it fuels progress.
Opportunity was third. So we went to work
conducting our due diligence.”
“The FBR website provided a 30,000-foot
view to assess and compare opportunities and
allowed us to dig deeper into the finer data
points. Franchisee satisfaction also played a big
role in our research. HomeWell Care Services
consistently checked all the boxes!”
“We also loved the new leadership team and
resources that HomeWell had put in place. We
get lots of direct support from the corporate
team. We have a wealth of tools at our fingertips.
We have a dedicated Franchise Business Coach
and a family of fellow franchisees.”
“As a HomeWell franchisee, I love helping
people in need, guiding them, educating them,
solving their challenges, and giving them a path
forward. We connect on big important things like
health, family, and what it means to be happy.
Nothing compares to that.”
FEATURED FRANCHISEE
Michelle Rankine, PhD
Right at Home
Lewisville, TX
Franchise owners since 2013 | 120 Employees
Before owning her franchise, Michelle
Rankine spent ten years in various leadership
roles in sports management and education,
including working for Purdue University,
the United States Olympic Committee, the
University of Denver, the New York Jets, Nike,
the Big Ten Conference, Sun Belt Conference,
and NCAA. She has extensive experience
leading and mentoring teams to maximize
group performance. She was instrumental
in creating the first-ever competition that
combines Paralympic and Olympic Judo
Athletes. She also helped develop a highperformance
plan for increasing the country’s
sports pipeline.
“One day, while completing my doctoral
degree, I saw an advertisement for the Right
at Home franchise. The ad hit home because
my family was in the process of caring for
my paraplegic brother after a terrible car
accident in 2011. The experience of having
to source additional in-home healthcare
and support for him opened my eyes to the
need for experienced and well-equipped
healthcare professionals.”
“I knew I wanted to be a business owner,
and I wanted a proven business model to
follow—one with a great mission. Right At
Home had it all! I found a team of fantastic
leadership, staff, and owners to help mitigate
the risks and challenges of being a business
owner.”
Initially, Michelle considered five different
franchises. “This was my first significant
investment, and I wanted to ensure I had
all the information before making a final
decision. My top criteria were thorough
and effective training, the culture of the
organization, and its financial strength.
I used FBR’s website and its top franchise
lists as part of my due diligence,” she said.
“I downloaded all the franchise reports from
the website. Franchisee satisfaction played
a significant role in my decision-making.
I wanted to ensure other owners were
satisfied with their purchase.”
“I asked several Right at Home franchise
owners: Would you purchase this franchise
again? Has it been profitable? Did you
feel prepared to run the business after the
training? What is one thing you wish you
had known before starting the business?”
When it was time to speak with the
franchisor, Michelle’s questions focused on
culture, vision, mission, and values. “All these
things make for a successful business,” she
said. “Some of the critical questions I asked
were: What is the company’s vision over the
next ten years? How do they maintain culture
with growth? What does franchisee support
look like? What type of coaching and career
development opportunities are available for
staff? What is the success rate of the average
new franchisee? Has the franchise conducted
any market studies on the territory I would
be responsible for to ensure my success?”
“Once I started, my biggest challenge
was planning and setting up my personal
franchise’s framework for success. I wanted
to create an office culture that fosters the
ability to improve the lives of those we serve.
I surrounded myself with other local business
owners and Right at Home corporate
support to overcome these challenges. Their
knowledge and insights helped to guide me
on my entrepreneurial journey and develop
a stellar franchise.”
“I’ve always thought of myself as
introverted, so I needed help mastering
the face-to-face marketing aspect of this
business. My franchise business coach
recognized opportunities for growth and
started one-on-one personal training
sessions with me. My franchise supports
and encourages success through its unique
culture and marketing. It truly exemplifies
being in business for yourself but not by
yourself. Support is an actionable item
for Right at Home. My coach flew all the
way from Nebraska to Texas to share best
practices and walk me through the process
of face-to-face marketing and cold calls.
Her guidance and encouragement gave me
the confidence to be a strong-minded and
successful businesswoman.”
“Right At Home takes their franchisee’s
suggestions very seriously. The Franchise
Satisfaction Surveys are sent out yearly.
I always make it a point to participate in the
surveys, and I believe the franchisor values
my feedback. They see franchisee feedback
as action items to prioritize. Right At Home
cares about its franchisees and wants to
ensure they are happy and successful!”
“My franchise truly exemplifies being in
business for yourself but not by yourself.
I had in-person training with my own Right
at Home business coach who helped me
better understand the brand and gain the
confidence to be a strong-minded, successful
businesswoman.”
“I am passionate about helping those
who can’t help themselves. My favorite
thing about what I do is to bring my clients
light during their darkest moments. I love
providing care and support in a dignified
manner that empowers our clients!”
“Every day is about wins and losses.
The journey is fluid. My advice to future
franchise owners would be to learn to be
comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Be open to new things and ideas, and be
willing to do the research.”
STACY COOK
Class 101
Norman, OK, Prosper/Frisco, TX
Franchise owner since 2021
Stacy and Rennie Cook run two Class 101
franchise locations. Rennie holds B.S. and M.Ed.
degrees in Education from the University of
Oklahoma and opened his first franchise in 2018.
Stacy holds a Master’s in Industrial Engineering
and worked as the Director of IT at the Federal
She joined Rennie in franchise ownership in 2021.
“We were considering all options of
business ownership, including starting our own
independent company,” Stacy said. “But franchise
ownership appealed to us because it comes with
a proven system, training, and support to help
owners get ramped up without reinventing the
wheel.”
“We conducted much of our research on FBR’s
Brand Recognition
Starting a business from scratch takes time and
money. Franchises, on the other hand, provide
well-known services and products with
established customer bases already built in.
Be Your Own Boss
Franchise owners are in business for
themselves, but not by themselves. That’s
the advantage of being part of a large and
successful franchise system.
Proven Business Model
Franchising is a multi-billion dollar global industry,
and it shows no signs of slowing down. Why?
Because it’s proven to be a very successful
business model.
Proven Playbook
Let’s face it, starting any business is risky.
That being said, the risk is lower when
opening a franchise because you’re buying
into a time-tested business system.
ADVANTAGES
OF FRANCHISING
Buying Power
A network of franchises has the opportunity
to purchase goods at a deep discount by
buying in bulk. The franchisor can use the
size of its network to negotiate deals that
every franchisee benefits from. A lower cost
of goods lowers the overall operation costs
of the franchise.
Business Assistance
Franchises will share financial metrics, best
practices, and other proprietary information
to help you operate a more successful
business. FBR’s top-rated brands are
recognized for the outstanding support they
provide their franchisees.
Bigger Profits
In general, franchises see higher profits than
independently established businesses. Most
franchises have recognizable brands that
bring customers in droves. This often results
in higher profits for franchisees.
Storm Guard
Investment Range: $185,400 – $221,600
Cash Required: $185,400
Total Units: 38
Storm Guard is the most trusted name in roofing
and construction franchises in the United States.
Too often, building contractors act like “storm
chasers” – traveling to communities in need,
working for a short time, and leaving. They are
not committed, local providers, leading to lowquality
work and price gouging. When they move
on, their customers are left without a warranty.
As locally owned locations, we understand the
importance of offering quality work at a fair
price. Storm Guard franchisees benefit from
industry-leading training, supplier relationships,
storm-tracking and drone technology, systems for
sales, production, and invoicing, and a supportive
network of other owners.
Cash Required: $100,000
Total Units: 226
British Swim School is dedicated to providing all
children the opportunity to learn how to swim,
focusing first on the skills needed to survive
a water accident before moving on to stroke
development, utilizing fun and gentle techniques
taught by experienced instructors. We rent
underutilized pools from fitness centers, hotels,
and retirement communities, so there are no
costs for buildout, maintenance, or upkeep. As
a franchise owner, you never have to get wet or
teach a lesson (unless you want to!). You’ll also
have the support of well-known Buzz Franchise
Brands, the parent company of British Swim
School.
FEATURED FRANCHISEE
NATALIE WATTS
A Place at Home
Little Rock, AR, and Hot Springs, AR
Franchise owner since 2019
77 Employees
Natalie Watts spent over 19 years in the
telecommunications industry in sales leadership
roles before opening her first A Place at Home
franchise in 2019.
“I wanted to start my own business, and
I decided on a franchise because I wanted the
structure, support, and knowledge that an
established brand can provide. I worked with a
franchise consultant and explored many
industries before narrowing it down to home care.
We used all available tools, including FBR’s top
franchise lists and franchisee satisfaction reports.”
“After going through the discovery process
with two home care companies and speaking
with many franchise owners, we chose A Place
At Home. Not only did their corporate structure
and core values align with mine, but I also had a
comfortable connection with the founders of A
Place At Home.”
“I opened A Place At Home in Little Rock in
August 2019. It took six weeks to get our first
clients. That felt like a lifetime. But once my
first clients were onboarded, I realized that the
relationship established with each client and
their families is what mattered most.”
“I couldn’t be more proud of my team. A Place At
Home, Little Rock, has been recognized nationally
by Home Care Pulse as both Provider of Choice and
Employer of Choice in 2022 and 2023.”
“Today, we are in the process of expanding our
territory into Hot Springs, Arkansas! We aim to be
open and offering services to those in need this
summer.”
