Tuning versus Execution 128 DataHub Implementation and Connectivity The discussion that follows is not presented as an exhaustive reference for LAN tuning purposes. It is meant to introduce you to the LAN parameters terminology and to give you a basic understanding of the interrelationships among parameters. Once you have this information, you can determine the demands your environment places on the resources and adjust the parameters to make DataHub/2 work. If you increase the value of a parameter more than necessary, two things can happen: • You get a configuration error message that tells you to lower the parameter or raise another so it fits. • Performance may suffer because another resource has been reduced dynamically to make yours fit. Refer to the Parmtune guide in the IBM marketing tools repository if you want to tune all OS/2 components for maximum performance. The LAN adapter card provides the physical connection for all local applications to applications running on other machines on the network. If more than one application is communicating, the target of the conversations may be different. Therefore the adapter has to provide links to more than one address. The protocols of the conversations may also be different. The access or programming interface for each application to the communications software could be different. Figure 90 on page 129 represents the layers required to provide several applications with access to several targets using several protocols. A server machine has to satisfy more requests for connectivity than a single requester. We show the resources needed for a DataHub/2 workstation and server in scenario 3. Figure 90 on page 129 shows how an application request from the DataHub/2 workstation flows through the configurable components to a server application. The return flow is the same. In our case the applications can be LAN requester, OS/2 Database Manager, and DataHub/2. Normally the flow is specific to a request, but changes to RDS and NETBIOS in recent releases have improved performance because the protocols allow conversations at lower level interfaces. The flow is therefore dependent on which level of code you run. DataHub/2 Workstation LAN Requester: LAN requester always uses NETBIOS (flow 1). Before the current version of LAPS, NETBIOS used a SAP, F0 to access the network (flow 3). The NETBIOS version in LAPS uses a direct interface to 802.2 (flow 2), and so fewer SAPs need to be defined. (A SAP is a service access point for an application to gain access to a network. Each protocol is given a specific SAP access number. If the connection uses a SAP, the SAP number is appended to the source and destination addresses. Newer versions of some device drivers bypass the SAP layer.)

Refer also to Figure 104 on page 143 and Figure 105 on page 143 for definitions within OS/2 Database Manager for the connection configuration. RDS: RDS can use either NETBIOS or LU 6.2 to connect to the network. If you select NETBIOS (flow 4), you end up in flow 2 or flow 3, depending on the NETBIOS version. This uses up another NETBIOS name and another session. It may require another link. We explain each account in more detail below. If RDS uses LU 6.2, a private SAP (SAP 84, flow 5) is used up as is another 802.2 user. DataHub/2: DataHub/2 uses both LU 6.2 (flow 8) for the tools conversations, and the API to OS/2 Database Manager (flow 7) to access the catalogs. Flow 8 uses the SNA SAP 04.
