2.2 Sample Scenarios Let′s see how DataHub is used in each of these environments. For each sample scenario, we show the required components of DataHub and their interrelationship. You can then select those components that match your environment and use or modify the appropriate configurations. We include the actual configurations we used in our scenarios. 2.2.1 Scenario 1: Local Management of Local Data 20 DataHub Implementation and Connectivity You have one OS/2 production database and would like to manage it with DataHub just to see what function DataHub provides. Your database administrator accesses DataHub from a control point—an OS/2 system running DataHub/2 as illustrated in Figure 11. The database you manage resides on what we call a source system. In this scenario, one function you use is Copy Data for backup requirements. The database tables on the source system are copied onto a third system, the target system. We select this scenario because it shows the function of each DataHub component in OS/2 and the relationships between DataHub/2, DataHub Support/2, and the OS/2 Database Manager. Figure 11. Components Required • DataHub/2 workstation − OS/2 version 2.0 − OS/2 Communications Manager and OS/2 Database Manager − LAN Adapter and Protocol Support (LAPS) − DataHub/2 • Managed host − OS/2 version 2.0 − OS/2 Communications Manager and OS/2 Database Manager − LAPS • Target − OS/2 version 2.0 − OS/2 Communications Manager and OS/2 Database Manager − LAPS − DataHub Support/2. The managed host is the source of any data tables. DataHub/2 on the DataHub/2 workstation reads the catalog information on the managed host and target machine. DataHub Support/2 on the target uses basic OS/2 Database Manager Remote Data Services (RDS) to communicate with the OS/2 DBM on the managed host. Notice that the managed host does not have any DataHub components. We show in Chapter 4, “DataHub/2 Workstation” on page 105 how this configuration works. For planning purposes, this scenario shows a minimum configuration and introduces the components and their function. The managed host cannot be a target of any DataHub functions unless DataHub Support/2 is installed on it. Function Provided Full DataHub function is provided within the OS/2 platform with the managed host as the source for data only. Skills Required The person implementing DataHub is probably your local database administrator. All components are installed on the OS/2 platform, so some PS/2* LAN skills are required. Chapter 2.
