Bay Harbour News Wednesday June 28 2023 10 NEWS Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Noisy vessels not welcome at port from June next year Charitable Trust DRIVER EDUCATION • By Heidi Slade NOISY VESSELS will not be let into Lyttelton from this time next year due to new noise specification. The Lyttelton Port Company and 12 other New Zealand ports have committed to the ship noise specification. Container vessels entering the port after June 1 must provide a certified noise measurement protocol, which would include a noise label score or confirmation a reactive silencer is fitted. The higher the noise label score, the quieter the ship. A minimum score of zero is needed for the vessel to be let into the port. LPC has determined a score less than zero is likely to generate community noise concerns. If presenting a negative score, the owner of the vessel would be notified and given up to six months to address the issue. If the noise label score does not change, the vessel would not be allowed in. Phil de Joux LPC chief corporate affairs officer Phil de Joux said the initiative was “a leap forward”. “Ports have been working together for a number of years to reduce noisy ships in ports,” de Joux said. So far this year, LPC has received 36 noise-related complaints. Lyttelton Community Association chair Ken Maynard said the new specifications seemed like a good solution. “The port company Ken Maynard is actually trying much harder in recent years. They do take some notice of what the locals say about noise issues,” Maynard said. He said the noise mainly bothers residents at night but was optimistic the regulations would help.
