WORK TO install a swathe
of safety improvements along
Canterbury, Oxford and
London Sts in Lyttelton started
on Monday.
The project will see three new
pedestrian crossings put in, new
kerb build-outs and an increase
in parking spaces.
“We want everyone to feel
safe on our streets, particularly
around schools and local
centres,” city council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said.
“One of our key focuses is
on making sure that we have
good safe access to community
facilities. Everyone should be
able to get
where they’re
going safely,”
Wright said.
It comes
after
pedestrian
safety and
accessibility
Stephen concerns were
Wright identified and
raised through the Lyttelton
School travel planning process,
community board seminars,
staff observations and residents’
comments.
Wright said the project aims
Work starts on pedestrian
safety and access project
improved road safety. The
new kerb build-outs will be
under taken at the north-east
and south-east corners of the
London St/Oxford St/Sumner
Rd intersection.
A new mid-block pedestrian
crossing will be placed on
London St, between Canterbury
and Oxford Sts, and two new
pedestrian crossings will be put
at the Canterbury/London Sts
intersection.
“We want to improve safety
for all road-users and allow
everyone to confidently make
journeys to school and around
the community,” Wright said.
“These upgrades will
prioritise people walking and
crossing the street, reduce
crossing distances and increase
accessibility.”
The road markings
will be changed and
the existing parking
restrictions outside Lyttelton
School will be extended,
resulting in two additional
parking spaces.
“The upgrade will
encourage people to walk
around the centre of Lyttelton
for local trips and will also
increase access to public
transport, resulting in positive
changes to reduce carbon
emissions,” Wright said.
Humans, birds
and dogs
contaminating
harbour water
WATER TESTING in Lyttelton
Harbour, Akaroa and the
surrounding bays has revealed
humans, birds and dogs are among
the sources of contamination.
Environment Canterbury under
took the testing to determine what
faecal pollution is entering the water
after rainfall.
ECan surface water science manager
Dr Elaine Moriarty said the
city council is now leading an investigation
into how the contaminants
are entering waterways in the area.
“The investigation is complex as
every public and private connection
poses a potential contamination
source, so investigations will take
some time,” Moriarty said.
Water contaminated by human or
animal faecal matter may contain
viruses, bacteria and protozoa,
which can cause gastrointestinal,
respiratory and skin infections.
People should avoid eating shellfish
from the harbour after heavy
rainfall and remove the gut and
liver of fish before cooking.
