Afestival of sport
The Hazara Association of
Canterbury hosted an Afghan
multisports festival in
Rangiora over the Matariki
weekend.
Organiser Belal Haidari says
it was agreat turn out for the
first national sporting festival
for Afghans.
‘‘We hosted the first
tournament of mixed sports for
the Canterbury area last year,
but then decided to extend it to
all of New Zealand, to make it
more inclusive.’’
Atotal of 17 volleyball teams,
12 Futsal teams, six women's
netball teams and eight junior
Futsal teams spent the
weekend competing at
MainPower Stadium.
‘‘We had over 350 players,
supporters and coaches from
regional teams from all over
the country.
‘‘Normally these teams only
contest their regional titles,
but we wanted to bring them all
together because sport is the
only way for us all to get
together, to meet and enjoy
each others company and
renew friendships.’’
Mr Haidari says all were
close fought games with Etihad
FC (from Christchurch),
eventually beating Hazara FC
(Christchurch) 32 in the Futsal
final.Etihad FC was the back to
back champion.
Maiwand of Auckland beat
Wellington in the volleyball
final with the game going to the
fifth set to decide the winner.
Hard fought
battle of wills
From Page 29
OhokavSaracens
After agood win against Oxfordlast
week, Ohoka was on the hunt for its
secondwin on the trot.
Saracens startedhot withatry out
wide in the firsttwo minutes, which
was unconverted.
But Ohoka struck backafter four
minutes with apenalty converted by
the everaccurate Scott Allin.
It was ahard fought battle for the
next 20 minutesbefore Ben Gold
snuck through the Saracensdefence
to score avery nice try under the
sticks, which was successfully
converted by Allin.
Six minutesout from halftime
Patrick McCullum slippedthrough
the Saracensdefence to push Ohoka
out to two tries, bothconverted, to
lead Saracens 175 at the half way
mark.
Saracens came out fired up after
the break, scoring atry in the 47th
minutetoOscar Burney.
However, it was to be the last
pointsscoredbySaracens in the
match.Its energy didn’tlast, with
Ohoka showing great defence, and a
real determinationtodeny
Saracens any chanceofmakinga
final.
The last points scored were by
way of alate penalty to Ohoka
kickedbyAllin. Players of mention
